Information about Cd distribution inside single municipal solid waste and biomass fly ash particles is fundamental since it affects its leachability. The internal 2D distributions of the main and trace elements in such highly inhomogeneous matrixes were successfully determined by means of the combined synchrotron radiation induced micro X-ray fluorescence (micro-SRXRF) and tomography (micro-SRXRFT) techniques. Scanning micro-SRXRF measurements show Cd elemental distribution within single fly ash particles to be inhomogeneous, but no information can be obtained about its internal distribution. During micro-SRXRFT analysis, single fly ash particles are successively measured by a rotational-translational scan in a VH=2 x 5 microm2 microbeam. The 2D internal elemental distribution images, obtained by the modified simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique algorithm, provide the size and the location of Cd-containing areas together with the location of other measurable elements. Results showed Cd concentration to be higher in the core of the fly ash particles analyzed rather than on the surface of the particles. Moreover, in both ashes, Ca-containing matrixes are found to be the main Cd-bearing phases. A possible mechanism for Cd adsorption on the fly ash particles is proposed based on the obtained results.  相似文献

Transmission electron microscopes (TEM) are widely used in nanotechnology research. However, it is still challenging to characterize nanoscale objects; their small size coupled with dynamical diffraction makes interpreting real- or reciprocal-space data difficult. Scanning precession electron diffraction ((S)PED) represents an invaluable contribution, reducing the dynamical contributions to the diffraction pattern at high spatial resolution. Here a detailed analysis of wurtzite InP nanowires (30–40 nm in diameter) containing a screw dislocation and an associated wire lattice torsion is presented. It has been possible to characterize the dislocation with great detail (Burgers and line vector, handedness). Through careful measurement of the strain field and comparison with dynamical electron diffraction simulations, this was found to be compatible with a Burgers vector modulus equal to one hexagonal lattice cell parameter despite the observed crystal rotation rate being larger (ca. 20%) than that predicted by classical elastic theory for the nominal wire diameter. These findings corroborate the importance of the (S)PED technique for characterizing nanoscale materials.

Generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) control charts are useful for tailor-made monitoring strategies, but they are less developed for discrete processes. In this paper, the GLR control chart framework applied to aggregate cumulative quantities data is extended. Inspired by the technical note on GLR control charts from Lee and Woodall (2018), unnecessary artificial bounds in the GLR chart for geometric data proposed in literature are removed and parameter restriction errors, common in GLR designs, are corrected. Finally, the Gamma GLR chart for continuous-time time-between-event data that can be modeled by a Poisson process is proposed and its performance are evaluated and compared to its traditional competitors.  相似文献

Self-assembled nanowires offer the prospect of accurate and scalable device engineering at an atomistic scale for applications in electronics, photonics and biology. However, deterministic nanowire growth and the control of dopant profiles and heterostructures are limited by an incomplete understanding of the role of commonly used catalysts and specifically of their interface dynamics. Although catalytic chemical vapour deposition of nanowires below the eutectic temperature has been demonstrated in many semiconductor-catalyst systems, growth from solid catalysts is still disputed and the overall mechanism is largely unresolved. Here, we present a video-rate environmental transmission electron microscopy study of Si nanowire formation from Pd silicide crystals under disilane exposure. A Si crystal nucleus forms by phase separation, as observed for the liquid Au-Si system, which we use as a comparative benchmark. The dominant coherent Pd silicide/Si growth interface subsequently advances by lateral propagation of ledges, driven by catalytic dissociation of disilane and coupled Pd and Si diffusion. Our results establish an atomistic framework for nanowire assembly from solid catalysts, relevant also to their contact formation.  相似文献

A technique based on liquid chromatography has been developed to facilitate studies of enantioselectivity in penicillin G acylase (PGA)-catalyzed hydrolysis of some 2-aryloxyalkanoic acid methyl esters and isosteric analogues. PGA was covalently immobilized on an aminopropyl monolithic silica support to create an immobilized HPLC-enzyme reactor. Two sets of experimental data were drawn to calculate the enantioselectivity (E) of the kinetically controlled enantiomer-differentiating reaction, the degree of substrate conversion and the enantiomeric excess of the product. The developed enzymatic reactor was coupled through a switching valve to an achiral analytical column for separation and quantitation of the hydrolysis products. The enantiomeric excess was determined off-line on a PGA-chiral stationary phase. In this way, highly precise E values were determined. A computational study related to the hydrolysis of the considered racemic esters was also carried out in order to unambiguously clarify both the substrate specificity and the enantioselectivity displayed by PGA.  相似文献

Trans-resveratrol, a polyphenol extracted from Vitis vinifera, has different beneficial effects following its administration on the skin. Here the potential use of binary systems to enhance in vitro and in vivo activity of trans-resveratrol was investigated. Thus the aqueous solubility of trans-resveratrol was investigated in the presence of growing concentrations of polyethylene glycol (PEG) or β-cyclodextrin (βCD) as solubilizing excipients. Then, the solid dispersion of trans-resveratrol with PEG or inclusion complexes trans-resveratrol/βCD were prepared and characterised by different methods. Cytotoxicity and inhibition of reactive oxygen species (ROS) following H2O2 challenge in the presence of trans-resveratrol, alone or associated to the excipients, was evaluated on human keratinocyte HaCaT cell line. Both the trans-resveratrol-containing binary systems induced significant reduction of H2O2-induced ROS production, especially in the case of βCD that was selected for the following phase of the study. Thus, the effect of a cream containing trans-resveratrol, alone or associated to βCD, on different skin parameters such as corneometry, colorimetry and elastometry, was evaluated on human volunteers. All patients showed a visible improvement of clinical conditions with a remarkable decrease of aging signs, but this effect was higher of the hemi face treated with the βCD-containing formulation versus formulation containing trans-resveratrol alone.  相似文献

An artificial fruit (AF) was used to test for social learning in pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) and adult humans (Homo sapiens). A monkey demonstrator opened the AF, showing alternative methods to 2 groups of cage mates. Video films of the monkey demonstrations were presented to adult humans. Compared with chimpanzees and children, the macaques watched the demonstrations significantly less and in a much more sporadic manner. They also produced only very weak and transitory evidence of social learning. In contrast, the adult humans performed as one might expect of optimum imitators, even producing evidence of components of a "ratchet effect." Nature has evolved mechanisms to create a diversity of specialized materials through nanoscale organization. Inspired by nature, hybrid materials are designed with highly tailorable properties, which are achieved through careful control of their nanoscale interactions. These novel materials, based on a silica‐gelatin hybrid system, have the potential to serve as a platform technology for human tissue regeneration. Covalent interactions between the inorganic and organic constituents of the hybrid are essential to enable the precise control of mechanical and dissolution properties. Furthermore, hybrid scaffold porosity is found to highly influence mechanical properties, to the extent where scaffolds of particular strength could be specified based on their porosity. The hybrids also demonstrate a non‐cytotoxic effect when mesenchymal stem cells are cultured on the material. Cytoskeletal proteins of the cells are imaged using actin and vimentin staining. It is envisaged these hybrid materials will find a diverse application in both hard and soft tissue regenerating scaffolds.  相似文献

The advantages and disadvantages of various digital terrain models are discussed briefly and a new model for triangulating a set of nonuniformly distributed three-dimensional surface observations is described. An algorithm for hierarchical subdivision of a set of data points into nested triangles is proposed. The algorithm selects a subset of the data points which reduce the maximum error between a piecewise linear approximation of the surface using only the selected points and the elevations of the points not selected. The data structure used is such that for any given degree of approximation (in the maximum-error sense) only the necessary points need to be stored. Furthermore, an efficient method is available to approximate the elevation of the surface at any point not included in the original data. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated experimentally.  相似文献

Since several years odour nuisance is a serious environmental concern in the city of Terni, whose citizens are repeatedly lamenting the presence of malodours. This paper describes the olfactometric approach adopted for assessing the odour impact on the city of Terni, caused by the co-presence of three important industrial poles: the steel industry pole, the chemical pole and a third industrial pole, comprising different activities for the treatment of wastewaters and solid waste. The combination of analyses by dynamic olfactometry and dispersion modelling allowed the evaluation of the citizens' exposure to the industrial odours, resulting in both the quantification of emissions and the assessment of their impact on the territory. The overall odour emissions were estimated to be equal to 218,000 ouE s− 1: 51% from the steel industry pole, 29% from the chemical pole and 20% from the other plants, respectively. The simulation of the emission dispersion shows that the odour impact relevant to all three studied industrial poles is considerable, actually investing almost the whole city of Terni. The study results also enabled the identification of the most problematic odour sources, which turned out to be the primary emissions from the furnace for the steel industry pole, Treofan and the wastewater treatment plant for the chemical pole and the municipal wastewater treatment plant and the pulper incinerator as far as the other plants are concerned.  相似文献
