We present an analysis of the combustion synthesis mechanisms for the preparation of hexaboride materials using three compounds as model systems: EuB(6), YbB(6), and YB(6). These three hexaborides were chosen because of the differences in ionic radii between Eu(3+), Yb(3+), and Y(3+), which is a factor in their stability. The powders were prepared using metal nitrates, carbohydrazide, and two different boron precursor powders. The resulting materials were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, which showed that combustion synthesis is effective for the synthesis of EuB(6), since the Eu(3+) ion has an ionic radius greater than ~1 ?. The synthesis of YbB(6) and YB(6) is not as effective because of the small size of the Yb(3+) and Y(3+) ions, making the hexaborides of these metals less stable and resulting in the synthesis of borates due to the presence of oxygen during the combustion process. Scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering of the EuB(6) powders shows that the particle size of the hexaboride product is dependent on the particle size of the boron precursor. The magnetic susceptibility of our EuB(6) powders manifests irreversible behavior at low applied fields, which disappears at higher fields. This behavior can be attributed to the increase in size and number of magnetic polarons with increasing magnetic field. 相似文献

Breast cancer presents greatest challenge in health care in today's world. The key to ultimately successful treatment of breast cancer disease is an early and accurate diagnosis. Current breast cancer treatments are often associated with severe side effects. Driven by the need, we report the design of novel hybrid nanomaterial using gold nano popcorn-attached single wall carbon nanotube for targeted diagnosis and selective photothermal treatment. Targeted SK-BR-3 human breast cancer cell sensing have been performed in 10 cancer cells/mL level, using surface enhanced Raman scattering of single walls carbon nanotube's D and G bands. Our data show that S6 aptamer attached hybrid nanomaterial based SERS assay is highly sensitive to targeted human breast cancer SK-BR-3 cell line and it will be able to distinguish it from other non targeted MDA-MB breast cancer cell line and HaCaT normal skin cell line. Our results also show that 10 min of photothermal therapy treatment by 1.5 W/cm(2) power, 785 nm laser is enough to kill cancer cells very effectively using S6 aptamer attached hybrid nanomaterials. Possible mechanisms for targeted sensing and operating principle for highly efficient photothermal therapy have been discussed. Our experimental results reported here open up a new possibility for using aptamers modified hybrid nanomaterial for reliable diagnosis and targeted therapy of cancer cell lines quickly. 相似文献

Over the last decade tissue engineering has emerged as a powerful alternative to regenerate lost tissues owing to trauma or tumor. Evidence shows that Schwann cell containing scaffolds have improved performance in vivo as compared to scaffolds that depend on cellularization post implantation. However, owing to limited supply of cells from the patients themselves, several approaches have been taken to enhance cell proliferation rates to produce complete and uniform cellularization of scaffolds. The most common approach is the application of a bioreactor to enhance cell proliferation rate and therefore reduce the time needed to obtain sufficiently significant number of glial cells, prior to implantation.In this study, we show the application of a rotating wall bioreactor system for studying Schwann cell proliferation on nanofibrous spiral shaped scaffolds, prepared by solvent casting and salt leaching techniques. The scaffolds were fabricated from polycaprolactone (PCL), which has ideal mechanical properties and upon degradation does not produce acidic byproducts. The spiral scaffolds were coated with aligned or random nanofibers, produced by electrospinning, to provide a substrate that mimics the native extracellular matrix and the essential contact guidance cues.At the 4 day time point, an enhanced rate of cell proliferation was observed on the open structured nanofibrous spiral scaffolds in a rotating wall bioreactor, as compared to static culture conditions. However, the cell proliferation rate on the other contemporary scaffolds architectures such as the tubular and cylindrical scaffolds show reduced cell proliferation in the bioreactor as compared to static conditions, at the same time point. Moreover, the rotating wall bioreactor does not alter the orientation or the phenotype of the Schwann cells on the aligned nanofiber containing scaffolds, wherein, the cells remain aligned along the length of the scaffolds. Therefore, these open structured spiral scaffolds pre-cultured with Schwann cells, in bioreactors could potentially shorten the time needed for grafts for peripheral nerve regeneration. 相似文献

The biological performance of orthopaedic and oral metallic implants can be enhanced significantly by the application of bioactive coatings. In this work, a cost-efficient alternative to the traditional technique to produce a hydroxyapatite (HA) coating with a nanostructured feature onto a metallic implant surface at room temperature via electrospray deposition, is presented. To evaluate the bioactive capacity of these nanoHA (nHA) coatings in vitro, an acellular simulated body fluid soaking experiment and a human osteoblast (HOB) cell culture work were conducted. Under these physiological conditions, the accelerated apatite precipitation process occurred on the nHA-coated titanium surfaces as compared to the uncoated titanium surfaces. HOB cells developed mature cytoskeletons with distinct evidence of actin stress fibres and vinculin adhesion plaques, on these nHA coatings. Hence, this deposition technique holds great potential in producing high quality nHA coatings for biomedical applications. 相似文献

Twin NLO chromophores having two azobenzene units linked by a flexible polymethylene spacer of varying lengths are shown
to exhibit odd-even oscillations in their second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies, when measured in the powder form.
These twin systems were designed to also exhibit liquid crystallinity, and indeed most of them do exhibit a nematic mesophase.
The anticipated odd-even oscillations, in both their isotropization transition temperatures (Ti) and isotropization entropies
(ΔSi), were also observed. The odd-even oscillation of the SHG efficiencies has been ascribed to a more effective cancellation
of mesogenic dipoles in the even twins as compared to their odd counterparts, due to a preferred centrosymmetric packing in
the former case. Based on the behaviour of these twin chromophoric molecules, it may be anticipated that such odd-even oscillations
will also be observed in the analogous main chain NLO polymers.

A mild chitosan/calcium alginate microencapsulation process, as applied to encapsulation of biological macromolecules such as albumin and insulin, was investigated. The microcapsules were derived by adding dropwise a protein-containing sodium alginate mixture into a chitosan–CaCl2 system. The beads containing a high concentration of entrapped bovine serum albumin (BSA) as more than 70% of the initial concentration were achieved via varying chitosan coat. It was observed that approximately 70% of the content is being released into Tris-HCl buffer, pH 7.4 within 24 h and no significant release of BSA was observed during treatment with 0.1M HCl pH 1.2 for 4 h. But the acid-treated beads had released almost all the entrapped protein into Tris-HCl pH 7.4 media within 24 h. Instead of BSA, the insulin preload was found to be very low in the chitosan/calcium alginate system; the release characteristics were similar to that of BSA. From scanning electron microscopic studies, it appears that the chitosan modifies the alginate microspheres and subsequently the protein loading. The results indicate the possibility of modifying the formulation in order to obtain the desired controlled release of bioactive peptides (insulin), for a convenient gastrointestinal tract delivery system. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

An analysis of the cure kinetics of several formulations composed of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBPA) and aromatic diamines, methylenedianiline (MDA) and diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS), in the absence and presence of 4,4′-bismaleimidodiphenylmethane (BM) was performed. The dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms were analyzed with the help of ASTM kinetic software to determine the kinetic parameters of the curing reactions, including the activation energy, preexponential factor, rate constant, and 60 min ½ life temperature. The purpose of this study is to compare the retinoscopy values obtained from cycloplegic refraction and non-cycloplegic refraction done with contralateral fogging procedure on children. Performing retinoscopy on children is a challenge because of two significant problems encountered during the procedure, which include maintaining fixation and control of accommodation. Although cycloplegic refraction is a gold standard in order to relax the accommodation completely, it has its own limitations. Whereas when assessing refractive error using static retinoscopy, it is conventional to fog the contralateral eye with a high amount of plus lens, to prevent a blur-driven accommodative response from stimulating consensual accommodation in the examined eye. The study was performed on 31 healthy, non-strabismic subjects of 7 to 16 years of age. Initially the refractive status of the eye was assessed objectively by non-cycloplegic refraction, done by fogging the contralateral eye with +6.00?D, in a dimly illuminated room. Then 2 drops of cyclopentolate 1% were instilled separated by 5?min, in the tested eye. Retinoscopy was performed 25 to 30?min after the first drop was instilled. A statistically significant mean difference exists between the findings obtained (p?<?0.05) in the spherical equivalent retinoscopy values (mean of 0.2944?D higher) with cycloplegic refraction when compared to non-cycloplegic refraction done with contralateral fogging. Non-cycloplegic refraction done with contralateral fogging technique as effective as the gold standard cycloplegic refraction technique for the measurement of refractive error in healthy, non-strabismic children. 相似文献

Spatial phase shifting technique in digital speckle pattern interferometry (DSPI) and digital shearography (DS) provides the phase information due to the object displacement from two images, one stored before and other after loading. The technique needs a carrier fringe system. The double aperture mask in front of the imaging system is one of the methods for introducing the spatial carrier frequency for phase evaluation. The size of the apertures and their separation are important criteria to obtain appropriate phase shift/column within the desired size of the speckle for phase retrieval. The assumptions of constant intensity and phase on adjacent pixels of the camera while calculating phase in spatial phase shifting (SPS) are not met as the speckled object wave contains intensity and phase gradients, resulting in distortions in the calculated phase profiles. In this paper we discuss a strategy to overcome these problems. The contrast of the correlation fringe obtained using this approach is much improved. It also eliminates the distortion in the unwrapped phase map like wave ripples. The experimental results on an edge clamped circular plate loaded at the center are presented. 相似文献
