The density; molar volume; thermal expansion coefficient; dissolution rate in water, HC1, and NaOH; glass transition and crystallization temperatures; and the absorption edge in the ultraviolet-visible and infrared were measured for PbO─BiO1.5─GaO1.5 glasses. The range of compositions investigated was x PbO (100 − (x + y) )BiO1.5 . yGaO1.5 for x between 20 and 60 cat% and y of 20, 25, 30, and 35 cat%. The glass-forming tendency increased with increased GaO1.5 and decreased with increased PbO or BiO1.5 . The compositional dependence of these properties was consistent with the weight, size, charge, and bond strength of the cations. The Ga3 + ions in these glasses are believed to act primarily as network-forming cations, whereas the majority of the Bi3+ and Pb2+ ions behave as network-modifying cations. It is suggested that a small friction of the lead ions are present as Pb4+ . Depending upon melting conditions, these glasses ranged in color from brown to yellow. Various attempts, including containerless melting, were made to obtain colorless glasses, but no conditions were found which totally eliminated the color. The least color (pale yellow) was obtained when the glasses were melted in an air or nitrogen atmosphere in an alumina or gold crucible. 相似文献

Mechanistic numerical analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation are employed to understand the material detachment mechanism associated with chemical mechanical polishing. We investigate the mechanics of scratch intersection mechanism to obtain a characteristic length scale and compare the theoretical predictions with previous experimental observations on ductile copper discs at the micro-scale. First, an analytical model is developed based on mechanics of materials approach. The analytical model includes the effects of strain hardening during material removal as well as the geometry of indenter tip. In the next step, molecular simulations of the scratch intersection are performed at the atomistic scale. The embedded atom method (EAM) is utilized as the force field for workpiece material and a simplified tool-workpiece interaction is assumed to simulate material removal through scratch intersection mechanism. Both models are utilized to predict a characteristic length of material detachment related to material removal during scratch intersection. The predictions from two approaches are compared with experimental observations in order to draw correlations between experiment and simulation. The insights obtained from this work may assist in understanding the mechanism for chemical mechanical planarization (CMP), and even be applied to other different machining and polishing events. 相似文献

The present study concerns development of a hard in situ boride-dispersed composite layer on the surface of AISI 304 stainless steel substrate to improve the wear resistance property. Laser processing was carried out by melting the surface of sand-blasted AISI 304 stainless steel substrate using a continuous wave CO2 laser and simultaneous deposition of a mixture of K2TiF6 (potassium titanium hexafluoride) and KBF6 (potassium hexafloroborate) (in the weight ratio of 2:1) using Ar as shrouding environment. Powder feed rate was maintained constant at 4 g/min. Irradiation results in dissociation of a pre-deposited mixture along with a part of the stainless steel substrate, intermixing and rapid solidification to form the composite layer on the surface. The micro-structure of composite layer consists of dispersion of titanium boride particles in AISI 304 stainless steel matrix. Volume fraction of particles is found to be uniform throughout the composite layer, though varied with laser parameters. The micro-hardness of the surface was improved 250–350 VHN as compared to 220 VHN of the AISI 304 stainless steel substrate with a significant improvement in wear resistance property. The mechanism of wear was found to be a combination of adhesive and abrasive in as-received stainless steel. However, it was predominantly abrasive for laser composite surfaced stainless steel. 相似文献

In the present work, the performance of cubic boron nitride (CBN) inserts was compared with coated carbide and cryogenically treated coated/uncoated carbide inserts in terms of flank wear, surface roughness, white layer formation, and microhardness variation under dry cutting conditions for finish turning of hardened AISI H11 steel (48–49 HRC). The flank wear of CBN tools was observed to be lower than that of other inserts, but the accumulated machining time for all the four edges of carbide inserts were nearer to or better than the PCBN inserts. Results showed that tool life of carbide inserts decreased at higher cutting speeds. The surface roughness achieved under all cutting conditions for coated-carbide-treated/untreated inserts was comparable with that achieved with CBN inserts and was below 1.6 μm. The white layer formation and microhardness variation is less while turning with cryogenically treated carbide inserts than the CBN and untreated carbide. At low to medium cutting speed and feed, the performance of carbide inserts was comparable with CBN both in terms of tool life and surface integrity. 相似文献

Alumina-forming ODS superalloys are excellent oxidation-resistant materials. Their resistance relies upon the establishment of a stable, slow-growing, and adherent -alumina. In the present investigation, these alloys exhibited unstable and relatively less adherent -alumina phase, which increased the oxidation rate in the transient stage and converted into -alumina in the later part of the exposure. The oxide-growth process was found to depend upon various parameters such as temperature, time, and presence of an active elecment in the superalloy. Characterization carried out by XRD, SEM/EDAX, and AES on oxidized ODS and non-ODS alloys demonstrated a significant influence of the active element, Y, on the transformation of - to -alumina. SIMS analysis of two-stage oxidation at 900°C for two different durations evidently showed that the change in the transport process is due to -to--alumina transformation. On the basis of these results, a new and consistent mechanism is proposed to explain the influence of -alumina and its transformation on growth kinetics and the effect of yttrium on the transformation leading to good scale adherence and oxidation resistance. 相似文献

This paper studies the effect of surface modification of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) prior to dispersion in engine oil to improve the tribological properties. The MWCNTs are stabilised in the lubricant with two different surfactants cetrimonium bromide (CTAB) and sorbitan monooleate (SPAN 80) and the effect of surfactants on the tribological properties has been studied. Pristine and surface modified MWCNTs in weight per cent range of 0·5% are dispersed in CI4 plus diesel engine oil. The foaming tendency and other physico-chemical properties of test lubricant have been studied to investigate the effect of nano materials and surfactants. The anti-wear and anti-friction properties are tested on a four ball wear tester and the comparison is made to assess the relative performance of pristine MWCNTs over surface modified MWCNTs. A strong influence of the surface modification technique is found on lubricating and physico-chemical properties. Both CTAB and SPAN 80 could keep the MWCNTs stable in the lubricant without compromising the foaming tendency of lubricant and other physico-chemical properties. The friction and wear characteristics of lubricants have improved with the dispersion of surface modified MWCNTs while there is no improvement in the properties of lubricant dispersed with pristine MWCNTs. 相似文献

The electrical conductivity of solution-grown poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) films doped with TCNQ, TCNE, TNF, and I2 has been studied as a function of dopant concentration, temperature (298–353 K), and field (50–2000 V). PPO forms a conductive complex on doping with these strong electron-acceptor organic molecules. As with PPO, two distinct ohmic and nonohmic conduction regions at low and higher fields, respectively, are observed. The conduction properties of doped PPo films result from the formation of an isotropic continuous charge-transfer complex. The existence of such a complex is confirmed by UV-visible absorption spectra measurements. A possible mechanism for the electrical conduction process is discussed. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献
