This paper discusses possible models for probability distributions of contact force magnitudes in loaded granular media. Many authors have studied such distributions, based on experiments with real particles as well as simulations in 2D and 3D. This has led to various and partly contradicting suggestions for the form of those distributions, which are described in the present paper. Its new theoretical investigations start from the empirically justified assumption that the components of contact forces follow exponential distributions with a certain dependence structure. This leads to distributions of force magnitudes similar to Gamma distributions with shape parameters depending on space dimension, which is in good agreement to results from experiments and numerical simulations. Also the analytical and statistical difficulties of the problem of determination of distributions of force magnitudes are discussed.In a discussion of Stefan Luding and D.S. the idea arose to consider dependent force components. Niels Kruyt supported our work by sending his papers and by patient discussions via e-mail and a careful reading of an earlier version of this paper.We had a very useful discussion with Farhang Radjai about the problem P(0)=0 and experiments with real disks. Nanotube-containing membranes prepared by the template method show promise for use as highly selective filters for membrane-based chemical and biological separations. Most of the work to date has been done on gold nanotubes prepared by electroless deposition of Au within the pores of polymeric filtration membranes. These polymeric filters have very low porosities (< 1%), and, as a result, the flux through Au nanotube membranes based on these templates is very low. In contrast, the other popular template membranes-anodic aluminas-have high porosities-30% to 50%. In spite of this potential advantage of anodic alumina templates, there have been no reports of electrolessly plated Au nanotubes within the pores of these templates. This is because the electroless plating method used to deposit Au nanotubes in polymeric templates does not work in aluminas. We have developed a modified electroless plating strategy that can be used to deposit high-quality Au nanotubes within the pores of the alumina templates. Processing methods have been optimized for the formation of graphitic carbon nanofiber (GCNF)/epoxy nanocomposites containing GCNFs highly dispersed throughout a thermoset epoxy matrix. GCNFs having a herringbone atomic structure are surface-derivatized with bifunctional hexanediamine linker molecules (GCNF-HDA) capable of covalent binding to an epoxy matrix during thermal curing and are cut to smaller dimension using high-power ultrasonication. GCNF-HDA nanofibers are dispersed in epoxy resin at 0.3 wt.% loading using variable levels of ultrasonication processing prior to thermal curing. Effects of sonication power on the quality of the GCNF-HDA/epoxy material obtained after curing have been determined from flexural property measurements, thermomechanical analysis and SEM/TEM imaging. GCNF-HDA/epoxy material of the highest quality is obtained using low-power sonication, although high-power sonication for short periods gives improved flexural properties without lowering the glass transition temperature. Good dispersion and polymer wetting of the GCNF component is evident on the nanoscale. 相似文献

We have undertaken a laboratory-based examination of the cardiovascular and thermal impact of wearing thermal (heat) protective clothing during fatiguing exercise in the heat. Seven males completed semi-recumbent, intermittent cycling (39.6 degrees C, 45% relative humidity) wearing either protective clothing or shorts (control). Mean core and skin temperatures, cardiac frequency (f(c)), stroke volume (Q), cardiac output (Q), arterial pressure, forearm blood flow (Q(f)), plasma volume change, and sweat rates were measured. In the clothed trials, subjects experienced significantly shorter times to fatigue (52.5 vs. 58.9 min), at lower peak work rates (204.3 vs. 277.4 W), and with higher core (37.9 degrees vs. 37.5 degrees C) and mean skin temperatures (37.3 degrees vs. 36.9 degrees C). There was a significant interaction between time and clothing on f(c), such that, over time, the clothing effect became more powerful. Clothing had a significant main affect on Q, but not Q, indicating the higher Q was chronotropically driven. Despite a greater sweat loss when clothed (923.0 vs. 547.1 g.m(-2) x h(-1); P<0.05), Q(f) and plasma volume change remained equivalent. Protective clothing reduced exercise tolerance, but did not affect overall cardiovascular function, at the point of volitional fatigue. It was concluded that, during moderately heavy, semi-recumbent exercise under hot, dry conditions, the strain on the unclothed body was already high, such that the additional stress imparted by the clothing ensemble represented a negligible, further impact upon cardiovascular stability. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine muscle activity patterns during patient handling during manual transfers, and transfers using floor and ceiling lifts. EMG patterns during transfers from bed to wheelchair and wheelchair to bed as well as patient repositioning in novices and experienced participants were examined. Surface EMG was recorded from the upper and lower erector spinae, latissimus dorsi and trapezius muscles bilaterally. Overall, normalized mean and peak muscle activity were lowest using the ceiling lift, increasing with the floor lift, which were lower than manual transfers (novices: all p < 0.01). Experienced patient handlers demonstrated approximately two times greater trapezius and latissimus dorsi activity than novices, combined with lower mean erector spinae activity (p < 0.05, for most tasks). Integrated EMG for all muscles was directly proportional to the transfer time and was lowest during the manual transfer followed by the ceiling lift, with the floor lift being highest. The difference between the muscle activity patterns between the experienced and novice patient handlers may suggest a learned behaviour to protect the spine by distributing load to the shoulder. Further examination of the muscle activation patterns differences between experience levels could improve training techniques to develop better patient handling strategies. 相似文献

In-vehicle technologies (IVTs) create additional tasks for the driver. To the extent that these devices degrade driving performance, there will be safety concerns. This study examines the effects of display clutter from overlay, display separation, and modality on driving and IVT task performance. In a fixed-base simulator, 22 drivers drove different routes and responded to infrequent, unexpected road hazards while engaging in a phone number task presented by different displays. Visual displays were located on a head-up (overlaid on the visual horizon or adjacently, just above the vehicle hood) or head-down display (HDD) located near the midconsole. Alternatively, digits were presented auditorily. In general, there were no differences in performance for the adjacent and overlay displays; however, there were costs associated with the HDD and auditory display for some measures. In particular, responses to hazard events were slowed when drivers used the HDD. Overall, the adjacent display best supported performance on all relevant tasks. Potential applications of this research include the design of IVTs with respect to location and modality. 相似文献

In August 2001, the Aerodyne Mobile Laboratory simultaneously measured NO, NO2, and CO2 within 350 m of a taxiway and 550 m of a runway at John F. Kennedy Airport. The meteorological conditions were such that taxi and takeoff plumes from individual aircraft were clearly resolved against background levels. NO and NO2 concentrations were measured with 1 s time resolution using a dual tunable infrared laser differential absorption spectroscopy instrument, utilizing an astigmatic multipass Herriott cell. The CO2 measurements were also obtained at 1 s time resolution using a commercial non-dispersive infrared absorption instrument. Plumes were measured from over 30 individual planes, ranging from turbo props to jumbo jets. NOx emission indices were determined by examining the correlation between NOx (NO + NO2) and CO2 during the plume measurements. Several aircraft tail numbers were unambiguously identified, allowing those specific airframe/engine combinations to be determined. The resulting NOx emission indices from positively identified in-service operating airplanes are compared with the published International Civil Aviation Organization engine certification test database collected on new engines in certification test cells. 相似文献

The accuracy and precision of quantitative energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry in the environmental scanning electron microscope have been estimated using a series of copper / gold alloys of known composition. The mean values (five to six replicate experiments) had relative errors within +/- 5%, and most were within +/- 3.5%. All relative standard deviations were < 5% and most were < 3%. Since the standard specimens were large (approximately 500 microm) in diameter, electron scattering in the 2 torr of water vapor above the specimen did not affect the results. Three galactopoietic stimuli, frequent milking (4X), bovine somatotrophin (bST) and thyroxine (T4) were used in an additive stair-step design to achieve maximum output (metabolic capacity) in six peak-lactation cows of high genetic merit (HT) and six of low genetic merit (LT). A further six of each merit were untreated controls (HC, LC). Milk yield was increased significantly by 4X, increased further by the combination of 4X and bST and increased further still and significantly by the full combination of 4X, bST and T4. The magnitude of the yield response to the sequence of treatments did not differ significantly between HT and LT. The yield response to 4X and bST was sustainable without significant loss of body weight or body condition score for the 6 weeks during which these stimuli were administered. The response to the full combination, which included T4, was accompanied by significantly elevated heart rate and significant loss of body weight and condition compared with the combination of 4X and bST. As a result, treatments were discontinued, on an individual cow basis, before completion of this 6-week phase. Time on experiment did not differ between HT and LT. The results do not support the commonly held belief that selective breeding of dairy cows for high milk production has rendered them markedly more susceptible to metabolic disturbances. 相似文献
