On the complexity of the bandwidth management problem for scalable coding video streaming on a public-shared network

This paper proposes a novel concept of using the sharable bandwidth of public-shared network, like FON network, to construct an efficient video delivery system. We show that the problem of constructing an architecture to serve the video streaming requests by using a minimum amount of sharable bandwidth is NP-Hard. A linear approximation algorithm is also proposed to manage the public-shared bandwidth so that all clients are served and the total amount of employed sharable bandwidth is no greater than twice of the optimal solution.

Stepped-impedance directional coupler with enhanced isolation using interdigital capacitance compensation

A novel and successful stepped-impedance coupler with enhanced isolation is presented. By incorporating the distributed interdigital capacitance at the ends of the coupled section in the planar structure, the even- and odd-mode phase velocities can be equalised so as to enhance the isolation. Measured results show an enhanced isolation of 47.5 dB at the centre frequency 2.4 GHz and a size reduction of 30% when compared with the conventional parallel-line coupler. It is also shown that the coupling frequency flatness is as broadband as 3.1 GHz.     

Triose Phosphate Isomerase as an Endogenous Time-temperature Integrator to Verify Adequacy of Roast Beef Processing

Bovine muscle type had a large influence on the initial activity and heat stability of triose phosphate isomerase (TPI). TPI activity in the round muscles was more heat labile than in the chuck muscles. Residual TPI activity in bovine semimembranosus muscle was determined after cooking using adequate and corresponding inadequate U.S. Department of Agriculture processing schedules. In both water bath and pilot oven studies, TPI activity was similar in adequately processed beef (about 2 U/g) and increased when inadequately processed by reducing the holding time by 0.5 and 1.0 log at each temperature. Taken together, these results suggested that TPI could be used as an endogenous time-temperature indicator to verify processing adequacy of roast beef if the muscle used in the product was known.

Scrapping small lots in a low-yield and high-price scenario

Some wafers in a lot may become spoiled after they are processed at a workstation; such a lot is called a small lot. In a low yield and high price scenario, scrapping small lots may increase revenue and profit; yet, this notion has seldom been examined. This study presents a model for formulating the decision-making problem of scrapping small lots. A genetic algorithm is used to solve the problem when the solution space is large. An exhaustive search method is used when the solution space is small. Some numerical examples are used to evaluate the outcome of scrapping small lots. The profit obtained by the proposed scrapping method may be up to 23% higher than that obtained without scrapping.     

Light guide for pixel crosstalk improvement in deep submicron CMOS image sensor

Light guide, a novel dielectric structure consisting of PE-Oxide and FSG-Oxide, has been developed to reduce crosstalk in 0.18-/spl mu/m CMOS image sensor technology. Due to the difference in refraction index (1.46 for PE-Oxide and 1.435 for FSG-Oxide), major part of the incident light can be totally reflected at the interface of PE-Oxide/FSG-Oxide, as the incidence angle is larger than total reflection angle. With this light guide, the pixel sensing capability can be enhanced and to reduce pixel crosstalk. Small pixels with pitch 3.0-/spl mu/m and 4.0-/spl mu/m have been characterized and examined. In 3.0-/spl mu/m pixel, optical crosstalk achieves 30% reduction for incidence angle of light at 10/spl deg/.
