Simulations of a neural network model of retino-cortical dynamics (O?men H, Neural Netw 6 (1993) 245-273) are presented. The temporal-step response of the model to a single dot (spatial impulse) consists of three post-retinal phases: reset, feed-forward dominant and feedback dominant. In response to a single moving dot, the model predicts the perception of extensive blur. This extensive blur is proposed to be due to the relative spatial and temporal offsets between transient and sustained signals conveyed from retina to post-retinal levels. In response to a pair of horizontally separated dots moving in the horizontal direction, the model predicts extensive blur for the trailing dot irrespective of dot-to-dot separation. For the leading dot, the model predicts a decrease in perceived blur for long exposure durations when dot-to-dot separations are small. The reduction of perceived blur at long exposure durations for small dot-to-dot separations is proposed to stem from the spatio-temporal overlap between the transient activity generated by the trailing dot and the sustained activity generated by the leading dot. The model also predicts that targets moving at higher speeds generate more blur even when blur is normalized with respect to speed. The mechanism in the model generating this effect is a slow inhibition within the sustained channel. These predictions are compared with recent psychophysical data (Chen S, Bedell HE, O?men H, Vis Res 35 (1995) 2315-2328) and are found to be in excellent agreement. The model is used to offer a coherent explanation for several controversial findings published in the literature. This computational study shows that a model without any motion-compensation mechanism can give a good account of motion deblurring phenomenon and supplements our recent experimental study which provided evidence against motion-compensation type models in explaining the motion deblurring phenomenon (Chen S, Bedell HE, O?men H, Vis Res 35 (1995) 2315-2328).  相似文献

This study examined gender differences in 162 female and 65 male patients with cancer referred to home care. Data were collected before hospital discharge using the Multidimensional Functional Assessment Questionnaire, the Karnofsky Performance Status, and the Quality of Life-Cancer Scale. Controlling for age and stage of disease, the results showed that men reported significantly more cancer-related impairments, more limitations in activity of daily living, and poorer social resources than women. No gender differences were found in quality of life, perceived emotional health, perceived physical health, performance status, and comorbidity. Significant predictors of self-care activities were: for women perceived physical health, Karnofsky Performance Status, and stage of disease (58% variance explained); for men Karnofsky Performance Status and medication taken (67% variance explained). Gender differences should be considered in discharge planning to provide appropriate home care services for male and female patients with cancer.  相似文献

Imaging spectrometer data (also known as ‘hyperspectral imagery’ or HSI) are well established for detailed mineral mapping from airborne and satellite systems. Overhead data, however, have substantial additional potential when used together with ground-based measurements. An imaging spectrometer system was used to acquire airborne measurements and to image in-place outcrops (mine walls) and boxed drill core and rock chips using modified sensor-mounting configurations. Data were acquired at 5 nm nominal spectral resolution in 360 channels from 0.4 to 2.45 μm. Analysis results using standardized hyperspectral methodologies demonstrate rapid extraction of representative mineral spectra and mapping of mineral distributions and abundances in map-plan, with core depth, and on the mine walls. The examples shown highlight the capabilities of these data for mineral mapping. Integration of these approaches promotes improved understanding of relations between geology, alteration and spectral signatures in three dimensions and should lead to improved efficiency of mine development, operations and ultimately effective mine closure.  相似文献

The sealing of surfaces in urban areas makes storm water management compulsory. Contaminated particles carried from urban surfaces are deposited in infiltration ponds. This gives rise to a highly organic (11% DW) contaminated sedimentary layer (Zn:1.2 mg/g, Cd:15 mg/kg) that could threaten groundwater quality. During infiltration, particle arrangement impacts infiltrating water and sediment exchanges. In this context, understanding particle arrangement and leachable components is essential. This study investigates Organic Matter (OM) not only as a pollutant but also as a substrate and a structuring element. The leachable fraction was collected and grain size fractionation was performed. OM of sediments and isolated fractions were characterized by measuring organic carbon content, isolating aromatic hydrocarbons, saturated hydrocarbons and polar compounds after dichloromethane extraction, and by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) molecular analyses. The organic compounds observed were petroleum byproducts (steranes and terpanes, unresolved complex mixture (UCM) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)), but plant and bacteria biomarkers were also found (phytol and derivatives, sterols). Leachable OM consisted of 6% of sediment OM (associated with particles >0.45 microm). This leachable OM is easily extractable by dichloromethane (96%) and contains fewer macromolecules than other fractions. Isolated grain size fractions showed dissimilarities (total organic carbon from 3.5 mg/g to 88.6 mg/g, extraction rate from 24 to 96%, aromatic hydrocarbon distribution) and similarities (proportions of aromatic and saturated hydrocarbons and polar compounds, molecular distribution of saturated hydrocarbons and polar compounds). The results suggest that organic macromolecules take part in the aggregation of sediments and prevent fine particles (<10 microm) from being leached. On the other hand, leachable particles (20 microm grain size mode) could carry low molecular weight organic molecules. The physical structure of the sediments and the leaching of particles containing contaminants are considerably affected by the presence of OM.  相似文献

Concentrations of the major methylated DNA purines were determined in two liver cell cell populations of Fischer 344 rats during administration of 30 ppm 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (SDMH) in the drinking water for periods of up to 4 weeks. Quantitation of 7-methylguanine and O6-methylguanine (O6MG) was achieved by highly sensitive optical methods following separation of DNA bases by high-performance liquid chromatography. Overall alkylation as indicated by the concentration of 7-methylguanine was near maximum in both hepatocytes and liver nonparenchymal cells by the third day of SDMH administration. Similar amounts of 7-methylguanine were present in the two liver cell populations at seven of nine time points during 4 weeks of exposure. In contrast, dramatic differences in the cumulative concentrations of O6MG were seen in the two cell populations. Nonparenchymal cells accumulated O6MG during the first 8 days of exposure and had up to a 30-fold greater concentration of this product than did the corresponding hepatocytes. In the hepatocytes, a rapid decline in O6MG concentration was observed between 1 and 3 days of exposure to SDMH. Thereafter, only low levels of this promutagenic lesion were present in hepatocytes. Exposure of rats to the same regimen of SDMH for up to 10 months caused angiosarcomas in the livers of over 90% of the animals, while hepatocellular carcinomas occurred in only 40%. Thus, a strong correlation exists between the inability to repair O6MG and cell specificity for carcinogenesis.  相似文献

The low-temperature (TT F) spin relaxation timeT 1 in normal liquid3He is calculated. First an expression forT 1 is obtained using the Landau kinetic equation, which is in terms of the perturbations of the scattering amplitudes due to nuclear dipole-dipole interactions. These perturbations are obtained using the induced interaction model, which explicitly includes the effects of many-body correlations arising from the Pauli principle.
