Natural organic matter (NOM) in drinking water supplies can provide precursors for disinfectant byproducts, molecules that impact taste and odors, compounds that influence the efficacy of treatment, and other compounds that are a source of energy and carbon for the regrowth of microorganisms during distribution. NOM, measured as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), was monitored daily in the White River and the Indiana-American water treatment plant over 22 months. Other parameters were either measured daily (UV-absorbance, alkalinity, color, temperature) or continuously (turbidity, pH, and discharge) and used with stepwise linear regressions to predict DOC concentrations. The predictive models were validated with monthly samples of the river water and treatment plant effluent taken over a 2-year period after the daily monitoring had ended. Biodegradable DOC (BDOC) concentrations were measured in the river water and plant effluent twice monthly for 18 months. The BDOC measurements, along with measurements of humic and carbohydrate constituents within the DOC and BDOC pools, revealed that carbohydrates were the organic fraction with the highest percent removal during treatment, followed by BDOC, humic substances, and refractory DOC.  相似文献

Polyphenols are the most abundant antioxidants in the diet and are widespread constituents of fruits, vegetables, cereals, dry legumes, chocolate, and beverages, such as tea, coffee, or wine. Experimental studies on animals or cultured human cell lines support a role of polyphenols in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, or osteoporosis. However, it is very difficult to predict from these results the effects of polyphenol intake on disease prevention in humans. One of the reasons is that these studies have often been conducted at doses or concentrations far beyond those documented in humans. The few clinical studies on biomarkers of oxidative stress, cardiovascular disease risk factors, and tumor or bone resorption biomarkers have often led to contradictory results. Epidemiological studies have repeatedly shown an inverse association between the risk of myocardial infarction and the consumption of tea and wine or the intake level of some particular flavonoids, but no clear associations have been found between cancer risk and polyphenol consumption. More human studies are needed to provide clear evidence of their health protective effects and to better evaluate the risks possibly resulting from too high a polyphenol consumption.  相似文献

The mineralogy and solubility of air-pollution-control (APC) residues from a secondary lead (Pb) smelter have been studied on samples from the Príbram smelter, Czech Republic, recycling car batteries, with the emphasis on their potential environmental effect. The presence of dominant anglesite (PbSO4) and laurionite (Pb(OH)Cl) was observed in a sintered residue from after-burning chambers (800-1000 degrees C). In contrast, low-temperature Pb-bearing phases, such as KCl x 2PbCl2 and caracolite (Na3Pb2(SO4)3Cl), were detected in the major APC residue from bag-type fabric filters. Metallic elements, zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and tin (Sn) were found homogeneously distributed within this residue. The formation of anglesite, cotunnite (PbCl2), (Zn,Cd)2SnO4, and (Sb,As)2O3 was observed during the sintering of this APC residue at 500 degrees C in a rotary furnace. The 168 h leaching test on filter residue, representing the fraction that may escape the flue gas treatment system, indicated rapid release of Pb and other contaminants. Caracolite and KCl x 2PbCl2 are significantly dissolved, and anglesite and cotunnite form the alteration products, as was confirmed by mineralogical analysis and PHREEQC-2 modeling. The observed Pb-bearing chlorides have significantly higher solubility than anglesite and, following emission from the smelter stack, can readily dissolve, transferring Pb into the environmental milieu (soils, water, inhabited areas).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to isolate and identify strains of Enterococcus from commercial cheeses and then analyze their abilities to produce biogenic amines. The genotypic variability, studied by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR, showed a high degree of homogeneity among enterococcal strains. Afterward, genotypic analysis indicated that all strains contain genes encoding a tyrosine decarboxylase. Our results indicate that a potential health risk exists if the enterococcal strains are able to survive the pasteurization of milk or appear as post-pasteurization contaminants. These results highlight the importance of the hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) to minimize the risk of hazards associated with post-contamination during cheese elaboration  相似文献

Fruit smoothie samples were thermally (P70 > 10 min) or high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) processed (450 MPa/20 °C/5 min or 600 MPa/20 °C/10 min) and the total antioxidant capacity (TAC), levels of antioxidant groups [total phenols (TP), anthocyanins and ascorbic acid], instrumental colour, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzyme activity and dissolved oxygen were examined over a storage period of 10 h at 4 °C. Thermal processing of smoothies reduced (p < 0.001) TAC and TP values, ascorbic acid and L and a colour attributes (lightness and redness respectively) compared to fresh and HHP-450 processed samples. Conversely, it did result in complete inactivation of PPO enzyme, with no activity detected. Of the HHP treatments, HHP-450 samples had higher (p < 0.001) levels of total antioxidant, phenols and anthocyanin content than HHP-600 samples. However, the latter was more effective in reducing (p < 0.001) the endogenous enzyme activity of the smoothies. .Ascorbic acid content degraded over the storage for all smoothies. HHP-600 samples had high initial values, which declined slowly over storage, while thermal samples had the lowest initial value (0.5 h) that fell below detectable limits by 10 h. Despite these data, less pronounced effects were observed for storage. No significant effects were observed for total anthocyanin and phenolic contents as well as L and colour change (ΔE) variables. Overall, HHP processing of smoothies at moderate temperatures may be a suitable alternative to traditional thermal processing.  相似文献

In the present study, a novel method of measuring the uptake of nutrients by 1H NMR spectroscopy was performed to determine dietary effects. Six pigs catheterized in the portal vein and mesenteric artery were fed breads made from whole-wheat grain (WWG), wheat aleurone flour (WAF; 19?% aleurone of bread) or rye aleurone flour (RAF; 15?% aleurone of bread) in a repeated 3?×?3 crossover design. Three meals were provided daily (at 0, 5 and 10?h), and each period comprised of 1?week. Portal and arterial blood samples were collected at fasting (?30?min) on day 4–7, and on day 7, pooled blood samples were collected at 0–2.5, 2.5–5, 5–7.5 and 7.5–10?h after first (0?h) daily meal. Using the arterial-venous difference and ANOVA–simultaneous component analysis, plasma betaine was found to accumulate during the experimental period. On day 7, plasma betaine concentrations was 20–40?% higher than when feeding the WAF diet compared with RAF and WWG (P?=?0.001), whereas the content of betaine in the WAF diet was about twice as high. The arterial-venous difference showed a tendency (P?=?0.078) for the diet–time interaction of betaine absorption in the absorption phases but there was no diet effect (P?=?0.31), which indicates a steady-state absorption has been reached on day 7. Furthermore, high plasma betaine levels correlated with low plasma creatine of endogenous origin. In conclusion, the explorative method revealed that the plasma concentration and absorption of betaine were differentially modified by the diets.  相似文献

A dated sediment core from Lake Thun covering the last 120 years was analyzed to get an overview of the historical trend of the chlorinated paraffin (CP) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) deposition, because CPs and PCBs have/had similar applications as plasticizers and flame retardants. Total CP concentrations (sum of short chain (SCCP), medium chain (MCCP), and long chain CPs (LCCP)) showed a steep increase in the 1980s and a more-or-less stable level of 50 ng g(-1) dry weight (dw) since then. The concentration-time profile is in good agreement with the available information on global production data. The quantification of higher chlorinated SCCPs using electron capture negative ionization low resolution mass spectrometry (ECNI-LRMS) revealed an increase in recent years. In addition, the degree of chlorination of SCCPs has strongly increased during the past 40 years, which may indicate its use as an additive for plastics, paints, and coatings. Furthermore, PCBs were analyzed in dated sediment slices. The PCB concentrations (sum of the six indicator congeners) peaked around 1969 (18 ng g(-1) dw) and decreased to 1.3 ng g(-1) dw in the surface layer corresponding to 2004. The peak level of CPs exceeded those of PCBs by about a factor of 3.  相似文献
