Water‐Stable,Magnetic Silica–Cobalt/Cobalt Oxide–Silica Multishell Submicrometer Spheres

A method to produce monodisperse magnetic composite spheres with diameters from less than 100 nm to more than 1 μm in water solution is reported. The spheres consist of a dielectric silica core and a cobalt/cobalt oxide shell which can be protected from further oxidation with an outer shell of silica or, alternatively, they can be covered with the polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone as a stabilizer. The formation of a uniform magnetic shell proceeds with the adsorption of metallic cobalt seeds, produced by the reduction of cobalt chloride with sodium borohydride, on a self‐assembled layer of polyelectrolytes on the silica core. In the second step, an outer silica shell can be formed by the hydrolysis and condensation of (3‐aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane and tetraethoxysilane. The double‐shell composite spheres show excellent sphericity, monodispersity, and a magnetic hysteresis loop at room temperature.

介绍了由5个单片机AT89C52构成的针对5 000位线阵CCD(电荷耦合器件)的分布式实时数据采集系统,系统采用RS-485通信协议的主从式网络通信结构;介绍了由DMA(直接存储器存取)传输方式构成的高速采集电路的设计和实现;用单片机C语言编写整个系统的控制软件;系统具有精度高、速度快、结构简单等特点,可广泛应用于现代高速高精度实时数据测量的军用、民用控制系统,具有一定的启发性和极大的应用前景.     

Dynamic Waveband Switching in WDM Mesh Networks Based on a Generic Auxiliary Graph Model

Waveband switching (WBS) is a promising technique to reduce the switching and transmission costs in the optical domain of a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network. This paper considers the problem of provisioning dynamic traffic using WBS in a WDM mesh network. The network of interest is a homogeneous WBS network, where each node has the functionality of WBS. The problem is called the dynamic WBS problem, which involves searching waveband-routes or wavelength-routes for the dynamically arriving traffic requests. The objective is to minimize the total switching and transmission costs in the optical domain. To solve the dynamic WBS problem, an auxiliary graph model capturing the network state is proposed. Based on the auxiliary graph, two heuristic on-line WBS algorithms with different waveband grouping policies are proposed, namely the wavelength-first WBS algorithm based on the auxiliary graph (WFAUG) and the waveband-first WBS algorithm based on the auxiliary graph (BFAUG). Simulation results indicate that WBS is an attractive technique which reduces the overall switching and transmission costs by up to 30% in the network. The results also show that the WFAUG algorithm outperforms the BFAUG algorithm in terms of port savings and cost savings.

Between 1990 and 1992, external sphincter repair was performed in 20 patients rendered faecally incontinent after earlier fistula surgery. All were improved, 13 (65%) achieving Grade 1 or 2 continence. Postoperative ultrasound was useful in explaining the sub-optimal outcome of 3 patients who still had defects. Clinical outcome in female patients was better than in male patients. Clinical outcome was not related to the results of preoperative manometry, the site of external sphincter damage, the use of a stoma, or the occurrence of wound complications. External sphincter repair for faecal incontinence after fistula surgery achieves good results in the majority of patients.     

Gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumour presenting as small bowel volvulus: a rare disease with a rare presentation

A 78-year-old Chinese woman presented with recurrent postprandial abdominal pain. Computerised tomography revealed a small bowel tumour causing volvulus of a segment of the small bowel. Laparotomy confirmed an extraluminal ileal tumour with partial volvulus of the involved small bowel segment. Small bowel resection was done. Histological and ultrastructural studies confirmed a gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumour. We review the medical literature on this rare tumour.     

Effects of ACh on the electric activity of rostral ventrolateral medullary neurons of rat in vitro

Extracellular single-unit discharges were obtained from 165 spontaneously active neurons within the region of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) by glass microelectrode from 89 brain slices of the Sprague-Dawley rats. The units could be divided into three types: regular (61.8%), irregular (24.2%) and silent (14%). Acetylcholine (ACh, 0.1, 0.3 mumol/L) showed four kinds of effects on spontaneous discharges of RVLM neurons: excitatory, inhibitory, biphasic and non-responsive, counting respectively 41.8%, 20%, 3% and 35.2% of the neurons tested. The excitatory effect of ACh was dose-dependent. The effects, either excitatory or inhibitory, of ACh (n = 49) were mostly blocked by atropine (0.3 mumol/L, n = 42). The excitatory effect of ACh (n = 14) could be blocked mainly by selective antagonist of M1 receptor, pirenzepine (PZ, 30 nmol/L, n = 9), but not by selective antagonist of M2 receptor, methoctramine (MT) and AFDX-116. The inhibitory effect of ACh (n = 10) could be blocked mostly by M2 receptor antagonist MT (30 nmol/L, n = 7); and this inhibitory effect (n = 9) could be blocked mostly by another M2 receptor antagonist AFDX-116 (30 nmol/L, n = 6), but not by M1 receptor antagonist PZ.
