Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can help the realization of low-cost power grid automation systems where multi-functional sensor nodes can be used to monitor the critical parameters of smart grid components. The WSN-based smart grid applications include but not limited to load control, power system monitoring and control, fault diagnostics, power fraud detection, demand response, and distribution automation. However, the design and implementation of WSNs are constrained by energy resources. Sensor nodes have limited battery energy supply and accordingly, power aware communication protocols have been developed in order to address the energy consumption and prolong their lifetime. In this paper, the lifetime of wireless sensor nodes has been analyzed under different smart grid radio propagation environments, such as 500 kV substation, main power control room, and underground network transformer vaults. In particular, the effects of smart grid channel characteristics and radio parameters, such as path loss, shadowing, frame length and distance, on a wireless sensor node lifetime have been evaluated. Overall, the main objective of this paper is to help network designers quantifying the impact of the smart grid propagation environment and sensor radio characteristics on node lifetime in harsh smart grid environments.  相似文献

Drying of agricultural products is an energy-intensive operation. High prices and shortages in fossil fuels increase the emphasis on using solar energy as an alternative energy source, especially in developing countries. In this respect, a new solar dryer, which consisted of a solar air heater and a drying chamber, was developed and used for drying various fruits and vegetables, i.e., sultana grapes, green beans, sweet peppers and chilli peppers and was successfully tested. In order to make a comparison, the traditional sun-drying experiments were employed. Results showed that the solar dryer reduced the drying time significantly and prevented mass losses, and essentially provided better product quality.  相似文献

It is generally agreed that combined deficiency of selenium and vitamin E leads to several abnormalities including Kashin-Beck disease which is an endemic and chronic degenerative osteoarthrosis. The abnormalities can be reversed by the administration of various forms of selenium and vitamin E. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary selenium and vitamin E on bone tissue and on the biomechanical properties of bone. Young rabbits of both sexes were fed with either a selenium- and vitamin E-adequate diet (control group), or a selenium- and vitamin E-deficient diet or a selenium-excess diet. The selenium-deficient diet resulted in a significant decrease in plasma selenium level and the selenium-excess diet resulted in a significant increase in the plasma selenium level with respect to the corresponding control values (p < 0.05). The diets did not affect the blood cell counts considerably but erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity increased (decreased) relatively when the plasma selenium level increased (decreased) (p < 0.05). The light microscopic investigations of the bone tissues of the two experimental groups indicate that the findings of the present work are compatible with osteomalacia. The biomechanical properties of the bones from the three groups were determined experimentally with bending tests. Both the Se- and vitamin E-deficient diet and the Se-excess diet decreased the biomechanical strength of the bones significantly while the bones belonging to the control group always had the largest modulus of elasticity (p < 0.05).  相似文献

Summary Effects of the gel preparation temperature T prep and the initial monomer concentration c on the swelling and the porosity properties of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) networks are described. PNIPA networks were prepared by free-radical crosslinking copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide and N,N'-methylene(bis)acrylamide (BAAm) in aqueous solutions. The crosslinker (BAAm) concentration in the initial monomer mixture was kept constant at 30 wt %. It was shown that macroporous PNIPA networks with a stable porous structure can be prepared at T prep = 22.5°C and at an initial monomer concentration c > 5 w/v %. The PNIPA networks contain pores of about 0.1 μm in radius, corresponding to the interstices between the microspheres. The experimental data also show collapse of the porous structure in PNIPA networks formed at higher temperatures. Investigation of geometrical parameters for flattened Brazilian disc method is important, since this is a simple and attractive method for mode I fracture toughness testing on rock cores. Evaluating numerical modeling results, a parametric equation in terms of principal stresses at the center of the disc and the loading angle of the flattened end was developed. An equation was proposed for maximum stress intensity factors at critical crack lengths around stable to unstable crack propagation. Comparing fracture toughness results of flattened Brazilian disc method to the results of the suggested cracked chevron notched Brazilian disc method, geometrical parameters for flattened Brazilian discs were investigated. Diameter, loading angle of flattened ends, and thickness of andesite rock core specimens were changed to obtain comparable results to the suggested method. The closest results to the suggested method were obtained by 54 mm diameter discs with loading angles larger than 32°, and thicknesses between 19 and 34 mm. Results were confirmed by the flattened Brazilian disc tests on a marble rock. In flattened Brazilian disc tests with smaller loading angles and larger diameters, larger fracture toughness values than the results of the suggested cracked chevron notched were obtained. However, excluding tests with large loading angles over 27°; specimen size was less effective on the results of these tests. Critical crack length parameters computed from modeling and experiments were close to each other for the flattened Brazilian disc specimens with smaller loading angles around 20° and thickness/radius ratio equal or less than 1.1.  相似文献

In this study, as-prepared and Ag-decorated ZnO/Zn(OH)2 composite nanoparticles (NPs) were obtained using the sol–gel technique. First, the effect of aging on the structural, optical, and morphological features was examined. Ag NPs can interact with the electronic structure of ZnO/Zn(OH)2 NPs, resulting in changes in their energy levels. It was found that the composite NPs obtained after 6 h solution aging increased in full width at half maximum and good crystallinity of the structures from the X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The Raman spectrum supports the experimental data obtained from XRD and Fourier transform infrared, a material containing a mixture of ZnO and Zn(OH)2. From the morphological study, Ag NPs were successfully decorated on the ZnO/Zn(OH)2 surface, and composite NPs did not change the morphological appearance of the structure. Second, the photocatalytic performance of the samples was investigated. In the experimental setting, ultra-violet A light was employed as the irradiation source, whereas rhodamine B (RhB) was used as the dyestuff. The photo-degradation of the RhB dyestuff on composite NPs was observed to be 98.5% and 92.5% for 6 and 2 h aged samples, respectively. On Ag NPs, the catalytic performance of the sample was increased up to 95% after 180 min.  相似文献

Millions of people worldwide are diagnosed with retinal dystrophies such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. A retinal prosthesis using organic photovoltaic (OPV) semiconductors is a promising therapeutic device to restore vision to patients at the late onset of the disease. However, an appropriate cytotoxicity approach has to be employed on the OPV materials before using them as retinal implants. In this study, we followed ISO standards to assess the cytotoxicity of D18, Y6, PFN-Br and PDIN individually, and as mixtures of D18/Y6, D18/Y6/PFN-Br and D18/Y6/PDIN. These materials were proven for their high performance as organic solar cells. Human RPE cells were put in direct and indirect contact with these materials to analyze their cytotoxicity by the MTT assay, apoptosis by flow cytometry, and measurements of cell morphology and proliferation by immunofluorescence. We also assessed electrophysiological recordings on mouse retinal explants via microelectrode arrays (MEAs) coated with D18/Y6. In contrast to PFN-Br and PDIN, all in vitro experiments show no cytotoxicity of D18 and Y6 alone or as a D18/Y6 mixture. We conclude that D18/Y6 is safe to be subsequently investigated as a retinal prosthesis.  相似文献

Understanding and analyzing fish behaviour is a fundamental task for biologists that study marine ecosystems because the changes in animal behaviour reflect environmental conditions such as pollution and climate change. To support investigators in addressing these complex questions, underwater cameras have been recently used. They can continuously monitor marine life while having almost no influence on the environment under observation, which is not the case with observations made by divers for instance. However, the huge quantity of recorded data make the manual video analysis practically impossible. Thus machine vision approaches are needed to distill the information to be investigated. In this paper, we propose an automatic event detection system able to identify solitary and pairing behaviours of the most common fish species of the Taiwanese coral reef. More specifically, the proposed system employs robust low-level processing modules for fish detection, tracking and recognition that extract the raw data used in the event detection process. Then each fish trajectory is modeled and classified using hidden Markov models. The events of interest are detected by integrating end-user rules, specified through an ad hoc user interface, and the analysis of fish trajectories. The system was tested on 499 events of interest, divided into solitary and pairing events for each fish species. It achieved an average accuracy of 0.105, expressed in terms of normalized detection cost. The obtained results are promising, especially given the difficulties occurring in underwater environments. And moreover, it allows marine biologists to speed up the behaviour analysis process, and to reliably carry on their investigations.  相似文献

Savanna covers about two-thirds of Africa, with forage quantity and quality being important factors determining the distribution and density of wildlife and domestic stock. Testing hypotheses about the distribution of herbivores is hampered by the absence of reliable methods for measuring the variability of vegetation quality (e.g. biochemical composition) across the landscape. It is demonstrated that hyperspectral remote sensing fills this gap by revealing simultaneously the spatial variation of foliar nitrogen (crude protein) as well as the total amount of polyphenols, in grasses and trees. For the first time, the pattern of resources important for feeding preferences in herbivores (polyphenols and nitrogen) is mapped across an extensive landscape and the modeled foliar concentrations are shown to fit with ecological knowledge of the area. We explain how estimates of nitrogen (crude protein) and polyphenols may be scaled up from point-based observations to reveal their spatial pattern, and how the variation in forage quality can influence the management of savannas, including farms, communal grazing areas, and conservation areas. It provides a glimpse of the choices herbivores must face in selecting food resources of different qualities.  相似文献

A microwave-enhanced advanced hydrogen peroxide oxidation process (MW/H2O2-AOP) was studied in order to investigate the synergetic effects of MW irradiation on H2O2 treated waste activated sludges (WAS) in terms of mineralization (permanent stabilization), sludge disintegration/solubilization, and subsequent anaerobic biodegradation as well as dewaterability after digestion. Thickened WAS sample pretreated with 1 g H2O2/g total solids (TS) lost 11-34% of its TS, total chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total biopolymers (humic acids, proteins and sugars) via advanced oxidation. In a temperature range of 60-120 °C, elevated MW temperatures (>80 °C) further increased the decomposition of H2O2 into OH radicals and enhanced both oxidation of COD and solubilization of particulate COD (>0.45 micron) of WAS indicating that a synergetic effect was observed when both H2O2 and MW treatments were combined. However, at all temperatures tested, MW/H2O2 treated samples had lower first-order mesophilic (33 ± 2 °C) biodegradation rate constants and ultimate (after 32 days of digestion) methane yields (mL per gram sample) compared to control and MW irradiated WAS samples, indicating that synergistically (MW/H2O2-AOP) generated soluble organics were slower to biodegrade or more refractory than those generated during MW irradiation.  相似文献
