Occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), the causative agent of listeriosis, in food processing facilities presents considerable challenges to food producers and food safety authorities. Design of an effective, risk‐based environmental monitoring (EM) program is essential for finding and eliminating Lm from the processing environment to prevent product contamination. A scoping review was conducted to collate and synthesize available research and guidance materials on Listeria EM in food processing facilities. An exhaustive search was performed to identify all available research, industry and regulatory documents, and search results were screened for relevance based on eligibility criteria. After screening, 198 references were subjected to an in‐depth review and categorized according to objectives for conducting Listeria sampling in food processing facilities and food sector. Mapping of the literature revealed research and guidance gaps by food sector, as fresh produce was the focus in only 10 references, compared to 72 on meat, 52 on fish and seafood, and 50 on dairy. Review of reported practices and guidance highlighted key design elements of EM, including the number, location, timing and frequency of sampling, as well as methods of detection and confirmation, and record‐keeping. While utilization of molecular subtyping methods is a trend that will continue to advance understanding of Listeria contamination risks, improved study design and reporting standards by researchers will be essential to assist the food industry optimize their EM design and decision‐making. The comprehensive collection of documents identified and synthesized in this review aids continued efforts to minimize the risk of Lm contaminated foods.  相似文献

Dietary fiber is a complex nutritional concept whose definition and method of analysis has evolved over time. However, literature on the role of dietary fiber on mineral bioavailability has not followed pace. Although in vitro studies revealed mineral binding properties, both animal and human studies failed to show negative effects on mineral absorption, and even in some cases reported absorption enhancing properties. The existing literature suggests that dietary fibers have negative effects on mineral absorption in the gastrointestinal tract largely due to mineral binding or physical entrapment. However, colonic fermentation of dietary fibers may offset this negative effect by liberating bound minerals and promoting colonic absorption. However, existing studies are limited since they did not control for more potent mineral absorption inhibitors such as phytates and polyphenols. Animal studies have mostly been on rats and hence difficult to extrapolate to humans. Human studies have been mostly on healthy young men, who likely to have an adequate store of iron. The use of different types and amounts of fibers (isolated/added) with varying physiological and physicochemical properties makes it difficult to compare results. Future studies can make use of the opportunities offered by enzyme technologies to decipher the role of dietary fibers in mineral bioavailability.  相似文献

In the present study we investigated the milking characteristics and the oxytocin release in dairy cows milked after either manual prestimulation or a premilking period with pulsating liners at normal pulsation rate (60) and ratio (60:40) while the pulsation chamber vacuum (PCV) was reduced to 20 kPa to prevent the opening of the liners. During the milking trial with 8 cows the PCV reduction was started either before attachment (PCV-1) or immediately after attachment (PCV-2) of the teat cups. Milk yields, total milking times, average milk flows, peak flow rates, the duration of milk flow plateaus, and the duration of milk flow declines did not differ among the 3 treatments. Only the time to reach peak milk flow was prolonged when the vacuum reduction was started after teat cup attachment (PCV-2). In this treatment, milk flow >200 g/min already occurred during the premilking period, resulting in bimodal milk flow curves. In 5 of the 8 cows, plasma oxytocin (OT) concentrations were measured from ?2 min before the start of milking until 3 min of milking to compare the OT release in response to manual prestimulation and during PCV-1. In both treatments, OT increased similarly and remained elevated until the end of measurements. Consequently, the areas under the curve of OT concentrations did not differ between treatments. In conclusion, milking performance is similar if milking is performed after manual prestimulation or after normal pulsation at reduced PCV. To prevent milk flow during the prestimulation period, it is of crucial importance to start the reduction of the PCV before cluster attachment.  相似文献

This study compares and evaluates the mechanical performance of two types of PET bottle of different nominal weights but identical design and filled with 900 ml vegetable cooking oil. The air in the headspace of all the bottles was replaced with liquid or gaseous nitrogen upon conclusion of the filling operation and immediately before capping. Two different closures, with an internal or external tamper‐evident feature, were used on the 20 g bottles. The 27 g bottle was closed exclusively with the closure fitted with an external seal. The 20 g PET bottles prior to capping were either flushed with gaseous nitrogen or pressurized with liquid nitrogen. The air contained in the headspace of the 27 g bottle was removed by injection of gaseous nitrogen only. Corrugated fibreboard cases containing 20 bottles each were submitted to a vibration test and all the components of the packaging system were subsequently evaluated with respect to important mechanical properties, such as stacking strength, drop impact strength and package integrity. The results show that the closure with external seal provided considerably better protection against leakage. Also tests conducted with stacks of five corrugated cases each and arranged onto two pallets placed one upon the other demonstrated that reducing total bottle weight by 26% is viable in terms of mechanical performance. New methods for the incorporation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into styrene-divinylbenzene-based high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) are addressed with specific attention to minimizing the SWCNT loading while maintaining a high level of conductivity of the final polyHIPE–SWCNT composites. Stable HIPEs were achieved using sodium dodecyl sulfate-stabilized SWCNTs, thus eliminating the necessity of SWCNT functionalization. PolyHIPE–SWCNT composites were made with water: oil ratios (vol/vol) of 75:25 and of 84:16. The percolation threshold was determined to be 0.2 and 0.1 wt%, respectively. These threshold values are lower than that obtained for non-porous, polystyrene–SWCNT composites made by means of a latex-based route followed by melt-processing.  相似文献

The inflammatory effects of carbon nanoparticles (NPs) are highly disputed. Here it is demonstrated that endotoxin‐free preparations of raw carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are very limited in their capacity to promote inflammatory responses in vitro, as well as in vivo. Upon purification and selective oxidation of raw CNTs, a higher dispersibility is achieved in physiological solutions, but this process also enhances their inflammatory activity. In synergy with toll‐like receptor (TLR) ligands, CNTs promote NLRP3 inflammasome activation and it is shown for the first time that this property extends to spherical carbon nano‐onions (CNOs) of 6 nm in size. In contrast, the benzoic acid functionalization of purified CNTs and CNOs leads to significantly attenuated inflammatory properties. This is evidenced by a reduced secretion of the inflammatory cytokine IL‐1β, and a pronounced decrease in the recruitment of neutrophils and monocytes following injection into mice. Collectively, these results reveal that the inflammatory properties of carbon NPs are highly dependent on their physicochemical characteristics and crucially, that chemical surface functionalization allows significant moderation of these properties.  相似文献

Rice is more elevated in arsenic than all other grain crops tested to date, with whole grain (brown) rice having higher arsenic levels than polished (white). It is reported here that rice bran, both commercially purchased and specifically milled for this study, have levels of inorganic arsenic, a nonthreshold, class 1 carcinogen, reaching concentrations of approximately 1 mg/kg dry weight, around 10-20 fold higher than concentrations found in bulk grain. Although pure rice bran is used as a health food supplement, perhaps of more concern is rice bran solubles, which are marketed as a superfood and as a supplement to malnourished children in international aid programs. Five rice bran solubles products were tested, sourced from the United States and Japan, and were found to have 0.61-1.9 mg/kg inorganic arsenic. Manufactures recommend approximately 20 g servings of the rice bran solubles per day, which equates to a 0.012-0.038 mg intake of inorganic arsenic. There are no maximum concentration levels (MCLs) set for arsenic or its species in food stuffs. EU and U.S. water regulations, set at 0.01 mg/L total or inorganic arsenic, respectively, are based on the assumption that 1 L of water per day is consumed, i.e., 0.01 mg of arsenic/ day. At the manufacturers recommended rice bran solubles consumption rate, inorganic arsenic intake exceeds 0.01 mg/ day, remembering that rice bran solubles are targeted at malnourished children and that actual risk is based on mg kg(-1) day(-1) intake.  相似文献

Guavas cv. ‘Kumagai’ were packed in several plastic materials and stored at 10°C and 85–90% relative humidity (RH) for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days (+3 days at 25°C). The plastic materials studied were: multilayer co‐extruded polyolephine film with selective permeability (PSP), low‐density polyethylene film (LDPE), LDPE film with mineral incorporation (LDPEm) and heat‐shrinkable polyolephine film (SHR). Guavas not packed were taken as control samples. The physicochemical characteristics of the fruits, O2 and CO2 transmission rates of the packaging materials and gas composition at the package headspace were evaluated. The LDPE film, 69 µm in thickness, with the lowest permeability to both O2 and CO2, led to anaerobiosis and high CO2 concentration inside the packages and promoted physiological disturbances and changes in fruit flavour. The SHR film, 15 µm in thickness, was the most permeable to CO2 and had quite high O2 transmission, which modified the inner atmosphere of the packages slightly. The fruits packed in this film showed a poorer quality than the controls, possibly due to the heat produced during the shrinking of the film. The LDPEm film, 24 µm in thickness, was almost as permeable to CO2 but had reduced O2 transmission, promoting an atmosphere of equilibrium of 3% O2 and 4.5% CO2. Fruits packed in this film kept their skin colour and pulp firmness, suitable for consumption up to 14 days. The PSP film, 35 µm in thickness, had the greatest O2 transmission but just over half of the CO2 transmission of LDPEm, promoting an atmosphere of equilibrium of 0.5% O2 and 4.5% CO2 inside the packages. Because modern technology depends on reliable supplies of a wide variety of materials, and because of increasing concern about those supplies, a comprehensive methodology has been created to quantify the degree of criticality of the metals of the periodic table. In this paper, we apply this methodology to the elements of the geological copper family: Cu, As, Se, Ag, Te, and Au. These elements are technologically important, but show a substantial variation in different factors relating to their supply risk, vulnerability to supply restriction, and environmental implications. Assessments are made on corporate, national, and global levels for year 2008. Evaluations of each of the multiple indicators are presented and the results plotted in "criticality space", together with Monte Carlo simulation-derived "uncertainty cloud" estimates for each of the aggregated evaluations. For supply risk over both the medium term and long term, As is the highest risk of the six metals, with Se and Ag nearly as high. Gold has the most severe environmental implications ranking. Vulnerability to supply restriction (VSR) at the corporate level for an invented solar cell manufacturing firm shows Se, Te, and Cu as approximately equal, Cu has the highest VSR at the national level, and Cu and Au have the highest VSRs at the global level. Criticality vector magnitudes are greatest at the global level for As (and then Au and Ag) and at the national level for As and Au; at the corporate level, Se is highest with Te and Cu lower. An extension of this work, now in progress, will provide criticality estimates for several different development scenarios for the period 2010-2050.  相似文献
