Cokriging-Based Sequential Design Strategies Using Fast Cross-Validation Techniques for Multi-Fidelity Computer Codes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Cokriging-based surrogate models have become popular in recent decades to approximate a computer code output from a few simulations using both coarse and more complex versions of the code. In practical applications, it is common to sequentially add new simulations to obtain more accurate approximations. We propose a method of cokriging-based sequential design, which combines both the error evaluation provided by the cokriging model and the observed errors of a leave-one-out cross-validation procedure. This method is proposed in two versions, the first one selects points one at a time. The second one allows us to parallelize the simulations and to add several design points at a time. The main advantage of the suggested strategies is that at a new design point they choose which code versions should be simulated (i.e., the complex code or one of its fast approximations). A multifidelity application is used to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed approaches. In this example, the accurate code is a two-dimensional finite element model and the less accurate one is a one-dimensional approximation of the system. Large diameter metal-on-metal bearings (MOM) are becoming increasingly popular, addressing the needs of young and more active
patients. Clinical data has shown excellent short-to-mid-term results, though incidences of transient squeaking have been
noted between implantation and up to 2 years post-operative. Geometric design features, such as clearance, have been significant
in influencing the performance of the bearings. Sets of MOM bearings with different clearances were investigated in this study
using a hip friction simulator to examine the influence of clearance on friction, lubrication and squeaking. The friction
factor was found to be highest in the largest clearance bearings under all test conditions. The incidence of squeaking was
also highest in the large clearance bearings, with all bearings in this group squeaking throughout the study. A very low incidence
of squeaking was observed in the other two clearance groups. The measured lubricating film was found to be lowest in the large
clearance bearings. This study suggests that increasing the bearing clearance results in reduced lubricant film thickness,

We show that monolayer-high islands of C60 and C60O can be transferred from Langmuir films on a water or phenol sub-phase to oxide-terminated Si(111) substrates. Faceted islands, in some cases incorporating a foam-like morphology reminscent of that previously observed for Langmuir films at the water-air interface using Brewster angle microscopy, are formed and transferred using small amounts (100-400 μl) of low concentration (of order 10− 5M) solutions of C60 (or C60O) with low target pressures (~ 10 mN/m). However, worm-like monolayer domains are also observed under identical experimental conditions, indicating the key role that inhomogeneous solvent evaporation plays in the formation of two-dimensional fullerene aggregates on the subphase surface. While Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers of C60 and C60O are both granular, there are significant morphological differences observed between the molecular thin films. In particular, C60O multilayers contain a relatively high density of ring (or “doughnut”) features with diameters in the 100-300 nm range which are not observed for C60. We attribute the origin of these features to dipolar or hydrogen bonding-mediated interactions between the C60O molecules at the water surface. 相似文献

Creation of inexpensive small-flow cytometers is important for applications ranging from disease diagnosis in resource-poor areas to use in distributed sensor networks. In conventional-flow cytometers, hydrodynamics focus particles to the center of a flow stream for analysis, which requires sheath fluid that increases consumable use and waste while dramatically reducing instrument portability. Here we have evaluated, using quantitative measurements of fluorescent microspheres and cells, the performance of a flow cytometer that uses acoustic energy to focus particles to the center of a flow stream. This evaluation demonstrated measurement precision for fluorescence and side scatter CVs for alignment microspheres of 2.54% and 7.7%, respectively. Particles bearing 7 x 10(3) fluorophores were well resolved in a background of 50 nM free fluorophore. The lower limit of detection was determined to be about 650 fluorescein molecules. Analysis of Chinese hamster cells on the system demonstrated that acoustic focusing had no effect on cellular viability. These results indicate that the ultrasonic flow cytometer has the necessary performance for most flow cytometry applications. Furthermore, through robust engineering approaches and the combination of acoustic focusing with low-cost light sources, detectors, and data acquisition systems, it will be possible to achieve a low-cost, truly portable flow cytometer. 相似文献

An optical metamaterial is a composite in which subwavelength features, rather than the constituent materials, control the macroscopic electromagnetic properties of the material. Recently, properly designed metamaterials have garnered much interest because of their unusual interaction with electromagnetic waves. Whereas nature seems to have limits on the type of materials that exist, newly invented metamaterials are not bound by such constraints. These newly accessible electromagnetic properties make these materials an excellent platform for demonstrating unusual optical phenomena and unique applications such as subwavelength imaging and planar lens design. 'Negative-index materials', as first proposed, required the permittivity, epsilon, and permeability, mu, to be simultaneously less than zero, but such materials face limitations. Here, we demonstrate a comparatively low-loss, three-dimensional, all-semiconductor metamaterial that exhibits negative refraction for all incidence angles in the long-wave infrared region and requires only an anisotropic dielectric function with a single resonance. Using reflection and transmission measurements and a comprehensive model of the material, we demonstrate that our material exhibits negative refraction. This is furthermore confirmed through a straightforward beam optics experiment. This work will influence future metamaterial designs and their incorporation into optical semiconductor devices. 相似文献

Negative results are not popular to disseminate. However, their publication would help to save resources and foster scientific communication. This study analysed the bibliometric and semantic nature of negative results publications. The Journal of Negative Results in Biomedicine (JNRBM) was used as a role model. Its complete articles from 2002–2009 were extracted from SCOPUS and supplemented by related records. Complementary negative results records were retrieved from Web of Science in “Biochemistry” and “Telecommunications”. Applied bibliometrics comprised of co-author and co-affiliation analysis and a citation impact profile. Bibliometrics showed that authorship is widely spread. A specific community for the publication of negative results in devoted literature is non-existent. Neither co-author nor co-affiliation analysis indicated strong interconnectivities. JNRBM articles are cited by a broad spectrum of journals rather than by specific titles. Devoted negative results journals like JNRBM have a rather low impact measured by the number of received citations. On the other hand, only one-third of the publications remain uncited, corroborating their importance for the scientific community. The semantic analysis relies on negative expressions manually identified in JNRBM article titles and abstracts and extracted to syntactic patterns. By using a Natural Language Processing tool these patterns are then employed to detect their occurrences in the multidisciplinary bibliographical database PASCAL. The translation of manually identified negation patterns to syntactic patterns and their application to multidisciplinary bibliographic databases (PASCAL, Web of Science) proved to be a successful method to retrieve even hidden negative results. There is proof that negative results are not only restricted to the biomedical domain. Interestingly a high percentage of the so far identified negative results papers were funded and therefore needed to be published. Thus policies that explicitly encourage or even mandate the publication of negative results could probably bring about a shift in the current scientific communication behaviour. 相似文献

Background: Because home hemodialysis has long been a common Australian support modality, the advent of home‐based nocturnal hemodialysis (NHD) in Canada stimulated the extension of our existing home‐ and satellite‐based conventional hemodialysis (CHD) programs to NHD. As a result, the first government‐funded, home‐based, 6‐nights‐per‐week NHD program in Australia began in July 2001. Methods: Sixteen patients have been trained for NHD; 13 dialyzed at home 8 to 9 hr per night for 6 nights per week, whereas 3 preferred to train for NHD at home using an 8‐ to 9‐hr alternate‐night regime. Results: The program experience to March 1, 2003, was 655 patient‐weeks. Two patients had withdrawn for transplantation and 2 for social reasons, although 1 continues on alternate‐night NHD. There hade been no deaths. Ten patients had dialyzed without partners. All patients ceased phosphate binders at entry. Thirteen of 16 discontinued all antihypertensive drugs. There were no fluid or dietary restrictions. Phosphate was added to the dialysate to prevent hypophosphatemia. Pre‐ and postdialysis urea and phosphate levels were broadly within the normal ranges. All patients reported restorative sleep; similarly partners reported stable sleep patterns and noted improved mood, cognitive function, and marital relationships in their NHD partners. Preliminary cost analyses show that whereas consumables had doubled, and epoetin and iron expenditures had risen by 28.9%, other pharmaceutical costs had fallen by 47%, and nursing wage costs were 48% of the notional cost had these patients remained on CHD. Three patients on NHD were retired, 7 worked full‐time, 3 worked part‐time, and 3 drew disability support, whereas previously on CHD, 3 were retired, 3 had worked full‐time, 3 had worked part‐time, and 7 had drawn disability support. Conclusion: We believe that NHD is viable, safe, effective, and well accepted with significant lifestyle benefits and reemployment outcomes. Although initial setup costs are significant, NHD cost advantage over CHD progressively accrues as program numbers exceed 12 to 15 patients. 相似文献

The purpose of the present investigation was to systematically examine the effectiveness of the Sympson-Hetter technique and rotated content balancing relative to no exposure control and no content rotation conditions in a computerized adaptive testing system (CAT) based on the partial credit model. A series of simulated fixed and variable length CATs were run using two data sets generated to multiple content areas for three sizes of item pools. The 2 (exposure control) X 2 (content rotation) X 2 (test length) X 3 (item pool size) X 2 (data sets) yielded a total of 48 conditions. Results show that while both procedures can be used with no deleterious effect on measurement precision, the gains in exposure control, pool utilization, and item overlap appear quite modest. Difficulties involved with setting the exposure control parameters in small item pools make questionable the utility of the Sympson-Hetter technique with similar item pools. 相似文献

This prospective observational study aimed at evaluating efficacy and biocompatibility performances of the new heparin-coated Evodial dialyzers with/without systemic heparin reduction. After a 4-week wash-out period with reference polysulfone F70S dialyzers, 6 hemodialysis patients were sequentially dialyzed with Evodial, F70S, and Evodial dialyzers using 30% heparin reduction, each period of treatment was 4 weeks. Removal rates (RR) (urea, creatinine, and β2-microglobulin), dialysis dose, and instantaneous clearances (urea and creatinine) were measured as well as inflammatory (C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor α, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1) and oxidative stress (OS) (superoxide anion, homocysteine, and isoprostanes) parameters at the end of each study period. Patients treated with Evodial or F70S dialyzers for 4 weeks presented comparable dialysis efficacy parameters including urea and creatinine RR, dialysis dose and instantaneous clearances. By contrast, a significantly lower but reasonably good β2-microglobulin RR was achieved with Evodial dialyzers. Regarding biocompatibility, no significant difference was observed with inflammation and OS except for postdialysis monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 which significantly decreased with Evodial dialyzers. Thirty percent heparinization reduction with Evodial dialyzers did not induce any change in inflammation but led to an improvement in OS as demonstrated by a decrease in postdialysis superoxide production and predialysis homocysteine and isoprostane. This bioactive dialyzer together with heparin dose reduction represents a good trade-off between efficacy and biocompatibility performance (improvement in OS with a weak decrease in efficacy) and its use is encouraging for hemodialysis patients not only in reducing OS but also in improving patient comorbid conditions due to lesser heparin side effects. 相似文献
