Sixteen-channel coherent broadcast network at 155 Mbit/s

An experimental 155.52 Mb/s coherent broadcast network with 16 channels using a conventional distributed feedback (DFB) laser operating at 1540 nm is described. It includes absolute laser frequency stabilization, a fiber span of 74.4 km, and a balanced polarization-diversity single-filter frequency-shift keying (FSK) heterodyne receiver. At a channel spacing of 8.5 GHz a power penalty of 0.3 dB is incurred due to adjacent channel crosstalk     

A simple method for measuring the relative permittivity of printedcircuit board materials

This paper presents a simple method to measure the relative permittivity of glass-epoxy printed circuit boards (PCBs). In this method, the relative permittivity as a function of frequency is measured using an actual PCB. In order to estimate the relative permittivity, the reflection coefficient is measured with a network analyzer. The relative permittivity is calculated by observing the frequencies of the resonant cavity modes. We show that the relative permittivity of an FR-4 sample decreases from 4.3 to 4.2 at frequencies from 300 MHz to 2 GHz     

Magnetically Ordered State of Cold Fermions on a Decorated Square Lattice

We study two-component ultracold fermions with repulsive interactions, which are loaded into a decorated square lattice. By combining the real-space dynamical mean-field theory with the numerical renormalization group method, we discuss magnetic properties in the system. It is clarified how the ferromagnetically ordered ground state, which is stabilized by a flat band mechanism, is adiabatically connected to the ferrimagnetically ordered state expected in the strong coupling limit.     

Convergence acceleration and accuracy improvement in power bus impedance calculation with a fast algorithm using cavity modes

Based on the cavity-mode model, we have developed a fast algorithm for calculating power bus impedance in multilayer printed circuit boards. The fast algorithm is based on a closed-form expression for the impedance Z matrix of a rectangular power bus structure; this expression was obtained by reducing the original double infinite series into a single infinite series under an approximation. The convergence of the single series is further accelerated analytically. The accelerated single summation enables much faster computation, since use of only a few terms is enough to obtain good accuracy. In addition, we propose two ways to compensate for the error due to the approximation involved in the process of reducing the double series to the single series, and have demonstrated that these two techniques are almost equivalent.     

The relationship between acoustic emission signals and cutting phenomena in turning process

The development of intelligent manufacturing by using machine tools is advancing in leaps and bounds. To maintain accuracy in machining and in the interests of fail-safe operation, monitoring of the cutting state or the final machining is very important. Acoustic emissions (AE) comprise elastic stress waves produced as a result of the deformation and fracture of materials. By measuring the AE generated during a turning process, it is possible to estimate the state of the machining operation. The correlation between cutting phenomena and AE in a turning process was examined experimentally by using a steel workpiece and a cermet tool in a numerically controlled turning process. The process of formation of chips, the types of chip, and the shear angle all markedly affected the AE signals. There was a strong negative correlation between the shear angle and the AE signal level. Similar results were obtained for various feed rates and for workpieces of various degrees of hardness. Correlations related to surface roughness and to tool wear are also described that permit the evaluation of the state of the turning process.     

A 500-MHz pipelined burst SRAM with improved SER immunity

This paper describes a 0.25-μm, 64 K×36 bit pipelined burst SRAM using a 6.156-μm² cell. It realizes over 500-MHz operation using a lower cost double metal process, Internal 16 K×144 organization by T-shaped bit line array reduces 20% of latency, 20% of active power, and 8.5% of die size. The low power also enables us to use lower cost thin quad flat type packages. Our solution to the soft error problem, a shallow triple well structure and four-transistor cell with stacked capacitor, improved soft error rate by 3.5 orders of magnitude compared with the conventional SRAM cell     

Synthesis and properties of carbocyclic oligothymidylate lacking the 5'-methylene

Oligodeoxynucleotides possessing a shortened internucleotidic linkage have been prepared using carbocyclic nucleosides lacking the 5'-methylene as the monomeric units. Specifically, the oligomers derived from carbocyclic 5'-n or thymidine and 2'-hydroxy-3'-deoxythymidine will be described.     

Advances in optical path crossconnect systems using planar-lightwave circuit-switching technologies

This article highlights advances in NTT's optical path crossconnect systems that use planar-lightwave circuit switches. A photonic MPLS router that can handle up to 256 optical label switched paths is developed as one result of our R&D activities; mature OPXC technologies are adopted to create a practical OPXC system.     

A novel DNA polymerase family found in Archaea

One of the most puzzling results from the complete genome sequence of the methanogenic archaeon Methanococcus jannaschii was that the organism may have only one DNA polymerase gene. This is because no other DNA polymerase-like open reading frames (ORFs) were found besides one ORF having the typical alpha-like DNA polymerase (family B). Recently, we identified the genes of DNA polymerase II (the second DNA polymerase) from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus, which has also at least one alpha-like DNA polymerase (T. Uemori, Y. Sato, I. Kato, H. Doi, and Y. Ishino, Genes Cells 2:499-512, 1997). The genes in M. jannaschii encoding the proteins that are homologous to the DNA polymerase II of P. furiosus have been located and cloned. The gene products of M. jannaschii expressed in Escherichia coli had both DNA polymerizing and 3'-->5' exonuclease activities. We propose here a novel DNA polymerase family which is entirely different from other hitherto-described DNA polymerases.
