Is Java really secure?

During a recent conference on Information Security, a group of experts raised the issue of the potential problems with the security of Java, initiating an interesting discussion between the developers and technicians at Sun Microsystems. This article considers Java security from an Italian perspective.     

ADAM10 and ADAM17—Novel Players in Retinoblastoma Carcinogenesis

A disintegrin and metalloproteinase (ADAM) family proteins, acting as sheddases, are important factors in a number of pathologies, including cancer, and have been suggested as promising therapeutic targets. The study presented focuses on the involvement of ADAM10 and ADAM17 in retinoblastoma (RB), the most common malignant intraocular childhood tumor. A significant correlation between ADAM17 expression levels and RB laterality and RB staging was observed. Levels of ADAM10 or ADAM17 regulating miRNAs miR-145, -152, and -365 were significantly downregulated in RB cell lines, and reduced miR levels with simultaneously upregulated ADAM10 and ADAM17 expression were found in RB patients. The involvement of both ADAMs analyzed in ectodomain shedding of the neuronal cell adhesion molecule L1 (L1CAM), shown to induce pro-tumorigenic effects in RB, was confirmed. Lentiviral ADAM10 and ADAM17 single or ADAM10/17 double knockdown (KD) induced caspase-dependent apoptosis and reduced cell viability, proliferation, growth, and colony formation capacity of RB cells. Moreover, differential phosphorylation of the serine/threonine kinase AKT was observed following ADAM17 KD in RB cells. Chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assays revealed that ADAM17 and ADAM10/17 depletion decreases the tumorigenic and migration potential of RB cells in vivo. Thus, ADAMs are potential novel targets for future therapeutic RB approaches.     

Bi-Allelic Mutations in Zebrafish pank2 Gene Lead to Testicular Atrophy and Perturbed Behavior without Signs of Neurodegeneration

Coenzyme A (CoA) is an essential cofactor in all living organisms, being involved in a large number of chemical reactions. Sequence variations in pantothenate kinase 2 (PANK2), the first enzyme of CoA biosynthesis, are found in patients affected by Pantothenate Kinase Associated Neurodegeneration (PKAN), one of the most common forms of neurodegeneration, with brain iron accumulation. Knowledge about the biochemical and molecular features of this disorder has increased a lot in recent years. Nonetheless, the main culprit of the pathology is not well defined, and no treatment option is available yet. In order to contribute to the understanding of this disease and facilitate the search for therapies, we explored the potential of the zebrafish animal model and generated lines carrying biallelic mutations in the pank2 gene. The phenotypic characterization of pank2-mutant embryos revealed anomalies in the development of venous vascular structures and germ cells. Adult fish showed testicular atrophy and altered behavioral response in an anxiety test but no evident signs of neurodegeneration. The study suggests that selected cell and tissue types show a higher vulnerability to pank2 deficiency in zebrafish. Deciphering the biological basis of this phenomenon could provide relevant clues for better understanding and treating PKAN.     

Microbes versus microbes: control of pathogens in the food chain

Foodborne illness continues as a considerable threat to public health. Despite improved hygiene management systems and increased regulation, pathogenic bacteria still contaminate food, causing sporadic cases of illness and disease outbreaks worldwide. For many centuries, microbial antagonism has been used in food processing to improve food safety. An understanding of the mode of action of this microbial antagonism has been gained in recent years and potential applications in food and feed safety are now being explored. This review focuses on the potential opportunities presented, and the limitations, of using microbial antagonism as a biocontrol mechanism to reduce contamination along the food chain; including animal feed as its first link. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry     

Submicron machining and biomolecule immobilization on porous silicon by electron beam

Three-dimensional submicrometric structures and biomolecular patterns have been fabricated on a porous silicon film by an electron beam-based functionalization method. The immobilized proteins act as a passivation layer against material corrosion in aqueous solutions. The effects'' dependence on the main parameters of the process (i.e., the electron beam dose, the biomolecule concentration, and the incubation time) has been demonstrated.     

An integrated methodology for the analysis of collaboration in industry networks

In literature, a large number of studies on the Italian districts exhibit a portrait which points out the Italian economic specificity. A specific feature of the Italian districts is the large number of collaborative actions carried on by the associated enterprises which are not limited to the solution of the usual supply chain management problems. As not all the collaborative actions bring immediate (and measurable) economic benefits, there is the need for a reliable and unbiased method aimed at the identification and analysis of the collaborative patterns inside an industry network, to determine their presence and effectiveness. The proposed method uses a graph representation of the inter-firm relationships inside a network and induces the presence of collaborative behaviours by the analysis of the graph topology.     

Universality in ant behaviour

Prediction for social systems is a major challenge. Universality at the social level has inspired a unified theory for urban living but individual variation makes predicting relationships within societies difficult. Here, we show that in ant societies individual average speed is higher when event duration is longer. Expressed as a single scaling function, this relationship is universal because for any event duration an ant, on average, moves at the corresponding average speed except for a short acceleration and deceleration at the beginning and end. This establishes cause and effect within a social system and may inform engineering and control of artificial ones.
