Atomic scale computer simulations, validated with experimental data, are used to uncover the factors responsible for defect‐induced chemical expansion observed in non‐stoichiometric oxides, exemplified by CeO2 and ZrO2. It is found that chemical expansion is the result of two competing processes: the formation of a vacancy (leading to a lattice contraction primarily due to electrostatic interactions) and the cation radius change (leading to a lattice expansion primarily due to steric effects). The chemical expansion coefficient is modeled as the summation of two terms that are proportional to the cation and oxygen radius change. This model introduces an empirical parameter, the vacancy radius, which can be reliably predicted from computer simulations, as well as from experimental data. This model is used to predict material compositions that minimize chemical expansion in fluorite structured solid oxide fuel cell electrolyte materials under typical operating conditions.  相似文献

Sheep is the second most important dairy species after cow worldwide, and especially in the Mediterranean and Middle East regions. In some countries, the difficult environmental conditions require a peculiar adaptation and, in these contexts, sheep are able to provide higher quality protein than cattle. In the least‐developed countries, the amount of dairy sheep and ovine milk production is progressively increasing. In order to improve dairy productions, in particular those with local connotations, it is necessary to obtain in‐depth information regarding milk quality and rheological properties. The genetic polymorphisms of milk proteins are often associated with quantitative and qualitative parameters in milk and are potential candidate markers that should be included in breeding strategies similar to those already available for cattle. Due to the current and growing interest in this topic and considering the large amount of new information, the aim of this study was to review the literature on sheep milk protein polymorphisms with a particular emphasis on recent findings in order to give scientists useful support. Understanding the genetic and neuroendocrine basis of the mother-infant bond is critical to understanding mammalian affiliation and attachment. Functionally similar nonsynonymous mu-opioid receptor (OPRM1) SNPs have arisen and been maintained in humans (A118G) and rhesus macaques Macaca mulatta (C77G). In rhesus macaques, variation in OPRM1 predicts individual differences in infant affiliation for mothers. Specifically, infants carrying the G allele show increased distress on separation from their mothers, and spend more time with them upon reunion, than individuals homozygous for the C allele. In humans, individuals possessing the G allele report higher perceptions of emotional pain on receiving rejection by social partners. We studied maternal behavior over the course of a year among free-ranging female rhesus macaques on Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico. We then trapped females and collected blood samples from which we assessed OPRM1 genotype; we also collected cerebrospinal fluid samples from which we measured oxytocin (OT) levels. We show that females possessing the G allele restrain their infants more (i.e., prevent infants from separating from them by pulling them back) than females homozygous for the C allele. Females possessing the G allele also show higher OT levels when lactating, and lower OT levels when neither lactating nor pregnant, than females homozygous for the C allele. This is the first study to demonstrate an association between OPRM1 genotype and maternal attachment for infants, and is one of the first studies of any free-ranging primate population to link functional genetic variation to behavior via potentially related neuroendocrine mechanisms. Objective: Existing studies on memory interference in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients have provided mixed results and it is unknown whether PD patients have problems in overcoming interference from retrieval cues. We investigated this issue by using a part-list cuing paradigm. In this paradigm, after the study of a list of items, the presentation of some of these items as retrieval cues hinders the recall of the remaining ones. Method: We tested PD patients' (n = 19) and control participants' (n = 16) episodic memory in the presence and absence of part-list cues, using initial-letter probes, and following either weak or strong serial associative encoding of list items. Results: Both PD patients and control participants showed a comparable and significant part-list cuing effect after weak associative encoding (13% vs. 12% decrease in retrieval in part-list cuing vs. no part-list cuing -control- conditions in PD patients and control participants, respectively), denoting a similar effect of cue-driven interference in the two populations when a serial retrieval strategy is hard to develop. However, only PD patients showed a significant part-list cuing effect after strong associative encoding (20% vs. 5% decrease in retrieval in patients and controls, respectively). Conclusions: When encoding promotes the development of an effective serial retrieval strategy, the presentation of part-list cues has a specifically disruptive effect in PD patients. This indicates problems in strategic retrieval, probably related to PD patients' increased tendency to rely on external cues. The enzymes used in degumming, called phospholipases, specifically act on phospholipids without degrading the oil itself. Degumming using a phospholipase C enzyme allows to meet all market specifications while it increases the oil yield. The aim of this study was to evaluate antioxidant and emulsifier properties of the recovered gum (RG) obtained by enzymatic oil degumming process of crude soybean oil subjected to modifications as deoiling (RG deoiled) or ethanol fractionation (RG soluble and insoluble). RG soluble allowed obtaining more stable oil‐in‐water emulsions (30:70 w/w) in comparison with those by‐products assayed at different concentrations (0.1–1.0%). Also, deoiled soybean lecithin (DSL) and RG deoiled had a similar behavior in relation to the kinetic destabilization (% backscattering profiles), despite the different degumming processes used to obtain these samples. The study on induction times (Metrohm Rancimat) showed a significant antioxidant effect (p<0.05) against a refined sunflower oil associated with all the by‐products analyzed. However, RG soluble and DSL showed a strong effect on the oil stability at high concentrations (1000–2000 ppm). These results showed that the deoiled recovered gum and its derivates obtained by ethanol fractionation are a potential alternative for industrial application as additive. Practical applications: The economic benefits of enzymatic degumming process have also been quantified by several oilseed processors. This process allows obtaining a by‐product with a high concentration of different phospholipids. This study intends to increase the commercial value of this recovered gum contributing to the food industry with useful information about their functional properties.  相似文献

The use of the frequency domain approach in the virtual estimation of mechanical component fatigue life under random loads is related to two conditions regarding the dynamic behaviour of components and the state of stress. The mechanical system must have linear behaviour and the probability density function of stress must be Gaussian, respectively. Obviously, these conditions are not independent, because there is a close tie between the transformations induced by the system to the random inputs and stress distribution.The rigorous procedure for the extension of these hypotheses is not available and only approximated approaches can be used: normally these are based on a corrective coefficient to the narrow-band formula.The main goal of this report is to suggest a separation of the effects on the corrective coefficient. In this manner, the global coefficient can be seen as the product between a partial coefficient related only to the wide-band effects of stress power spectral density function and another one dependent on non-normality indices of stress probability density function. A meaningful application has been investigated to validate the practical employment of this approach. By this example the authors also defined an original analytical expression of a corrective coefficient for Gaussian damage; however, the formulation has to be improved by other applications, because its validity is tested only on a too much limited domain of Kurtosis values. Moreover, the authors suggest that a modal approach to the stress recovery procedure of a flexible body might be an interesting way to the rapid identification of non-Gaussianity indices in the analysis of frequency and time domain dynamics. For this reason, they believe that the investigation of tying the stress non-Gaussianity to the non-Gaussianity of the component modal coordinates to be useful.  相似文献

The free vibration analysis of asymmetrical three-dimensional (3D) uniform shear beam-columns with generalized boundary conditions (semirigid flexural and torsional restraints, lateral bracings, and lumped masses at both ends) subjected to an eccentric end axial load in addition to a linearly distributed eccentric axial load along its span is presented in a classic manner. The five coupled governing equations of dynamic equilibrium (i.e., two shear equations, two bending moment equations, and the pure torsion moment equation) are sufficient to determine the natural frequencies and modal shapes. The proposed model which is an extension of a 2D model presented previously by the writer includes the simultaneous 3D coupling effects among the lateral deflections, deformations of the cross section along the member (shear, torsional and rotational), the translational, rotational and torsional inertias of all masses considered, an eccentric end axial load in addition to a linearly distributed axial load along its span, and the end restraints. Deformations caused by shear forces and pure torsion are considered. The effects of axial deformations, warping torsion and torsional stability are not included. The proposed model shows that the dynamic behavior of 3D shear beam-columns is highly sensitive to the coupling effects just mentioned, particularly in members with both ends free to rotate. Analytical results indicate that except for doubly symmetric members with concentric axial loads and with perfectly clamped ends, the natural frequencies and modal shapes of 3D shear beam-columns are determined from the eigenvalues of a full 8×8 matrix, rather than from the uncoupled equations of transverse (or shear-wave equations) and torsional moment equilibrium. Two comprehensive examples are presented that show the effectiveness of the proposed method.  相似文献

Foodborne disease caused by Salmonella represents a worldwide public health problem. In Europe, salmonellosis is still the second most commonly recorded zoonosis. Since the standard culture method for detecting Salmonella (ISO 6579:2002) requires up to 5 days to produce results, the need to develop rapid methods represents an important issue for the authorities and the producers. The aim of the present study was the in-house validation, according to ISO 16140, of an open-formula diagnostic real-time PCR for the detection of Salmonella in all the different meat categories reported in the EU Regulations relative to microbiological criteria for food safety. The assay employed specific primers and a probe target within the ttrRSBCA locus, which allows the tetrathionate respiration in Salmonella. Selectivity, relative accuracy, relative sensitivity and relative specificity were established by testing 110 bacterial strains and 175 various edible meat samples. Results showed 100 % selectivity, 100 % relative accuracy, 100 % relative sensitivity and 100 % relative specificity of the real-time PCR when compared to the standard culture method used as reference. In addition, in order to minimize the effect of the competitive micro-flora naturally present on meat samples, a highly nutritious and selective commercial medium (ONE Broth Salmonella, Oxoid) was evaluated in comparison with the classical non-selective pre-enrichment broth (buffered peptone water). Results demonstrated that the ONE Broth Salmonella medium increases the growth of Salmonella in the presence of competitive micro-flora.  相似文献

Foodborne illness continues as a considerable threat to public health. Despite improved hygiene management systems and increased regulation, pathogenic bacteria still contaminate food, causing sporadic cases of illness and disease outbreaks worldwide. For many centuries, microbial antagonism has been used in food processing to improve food safety. An understanding of the mode of action of this microbial antagonism has been gained in recent years and potential applications in food and feed safety are now being explored. This review focuses on the potential opportunities presented, and the limitations, of using microbial antagonism as a biocontrol mechanism to reduce contamination along the food chain; including animal feed as its first link. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献
