Recognizing, assessing, and intervening with problems of professional competence.

Working collaboratively, psychologist educators and trainers at the doctoral, internship, and postdoctoral levels; credentialers; practitioners; and students offer 8 proposals for psychologists to consider in recognizing, assessing, and intervening with problems of professional competence in students and practicing professionals. In the proposals, the authors address the following topics: definitions and categories; preparing the system; self-assessment; remediation; diversity; communication across various levels of the system; confidentiality; and ethical, regulatory, and legal underpinnings. They also propose future directions for the assessment of problems in professional competence in both students and practicing psychologists. Anion Sensing Porphyrin Functionalized Nanoparticles

Disulfide and dithiocarbamate functionalized porphyrins have been synthesized and used as protecting ligands for gold nanoparticle formation either via ligand substitution reactions or by direct synthesis. These nanoparticles have been shown to recognize anions via changes in the absorbance spectrum of the surface adsorbed porphyrin moieties. Association constants, derived from quantitative titrations, indicate a remarkable surface enhancement effect where the surface bound porphyrins bind anions much more strongly than the free receptor in solution.     

Evaluation of capital cost data. part 7: Liquid waste disposal with emphasis on physical treatment

Capital cost correlations are given for oil-water separators, equalization basins, primary clarifiers, clarifiers and clarifier mechanisms, reverse osmosis unit, ultrafiltration units, gravity filters and miroscreens. Data are included for raw sewage, intermediate and recirculation pumping stations and for preliminary treatment (or bar screens, grit removal, overflow and bypass chamber and Parshall flume), for grit removal, comminution and gas stripping. The correlations are accurate to ± 30%, expressed in Canadian dollars and adjusted to a Marshall and Swift value of 1000. Details as to what components are included in the cost are given. Data are given for the labour and material costs to create a working process module. For inflation indices, a critique of the Engineering News Record, EPA small city, Marshall and Swift, Chemical Engineering and Southam inflation indices suggested that the Marshall and Swift index is most appropriate for the construction and process equipment studied here. Concerning the currency exchange, for the equipment and processes in this study, equipment costs the same whether expressed directly in US or Canadian dollars. To put the current data into perspective, several hundred sources of cost data were analyzed. The major correlations are compared, on a consistent basis, with current data.     

President’s column.

This presidential column announces the significant internal changes of Division 13 of the Consulting Psychology Journal. The journal is now published by the Educational Publishing Foundation, which is associated with the American Psychological Association in order to increase the quality, quantity, and diversity of submissions to the journal. The author outlines the steps that will be taken to make the Division a more viable and inviting organization for members in ways that are obvious and easily accessible to them. Tandem queues with general blocking: A unified model and comparison results

We study tandem queues with finite intermediate buffers and develop a general blocking scheme that unifies and generalizes various blocking schemes previously studied in the literature, such as manufacturing blocking, communication blocking, kanban blocking and its variations. In the general blocking scheme, job movement and service at each stage are controlled by three parameters, which represent, respectively, the upper limits (at that stage) on work-in-process inventory, finished goods inventory, and buffer space. We derive a set of recursive equations that characterize the dynamics of the system, in terms of the job completion and departure processes, and establish comparison results for these processes in the settings of stochastic ordering, variability ordering and stochastic convexity. Free of distributional assumptions, the results provide characterization of system behavior with respect to the control parameters as well as to the arrival and service processes. We also compare system performance under two different modes of operation: make-to-order versus make-to-stock, and demonstrate the trade-off between improving service and reducing inventory. Numerical studies are also presented to illustrate the diversity of performance trade-off, including composition of inventory, offered by the general model.Supported in part by NSF under grant ECS-89-96201.     

Approximate solutions for non-linear random vibration problems

Two methods are described for obtaining approximate solutions to non-linear random vibration problems. The first method approximates the non-linear system with the linear system whose corresponding probability density function best solves the Fokker-Planck equation associated with the non-linear system. In the second method, a class of non-linear systems with known solutions to the Fokker-Planck equation is used to best approximate the non-linear system of interest. Two illustrative examples are presented and the results are compared with existing methods.     

The segmented bidirectional single-loop topology for material flow systems

This paper introduces the segmented bidirectional single-loop (SBSL) flow topology for carrier-based material handling systems. This configuration is based on a single-loop flow-path structure that is divided into non-overlapping segments, each containing a single carrier operating in a bidirectional mode. The design procedure comprises a 0 - 1 mixed-integer formulation to determine the single-loop including the pickup and delivery station location. The second stage is a segmentation procedure to determine the non-overlapping segments in the loop. Finally the performance of the SBSL is evaluated by means of simulation.     

An object-oriented product database using ROSE

A product database for a design and manufacturing enterprise serves as a repository for the data needed to manufacture a product. This paper discusses how an object-oriented persistent object manager named ROSE, under development at Rensselaer, has been used in the Rensselaer CIM program to develop a STEP/PDES-compliant product database for its research test bed. In so doing, it provides an overview of the requirements for a product database system in an integrated design and manufacturing facility, and it discusses how the chosen system meets these requirements.     

Flat affect in schizophrenia does not reflect diminished subjective experience of emotion.

Although accorded historical significance, affective features of schizophrenia have only begun to receive systematic empirical attention. Interestingly, both early psychopathology writers and more recent investigators have reported frequent discrepancies between schizophrenics' feelings and outward expressions of emotion. Using a more comprehensive assessment of emotion, the present study examines the relationship between emotional experience and expression in a sample of medication-free schizophrenics. Compared with their normal counterparts, schizophrenics were indeed much less facially expressive of both positive and negative emotions during emotion-eliciting films, yet they reported experiencing as much positive and negative emotion. Therefore, the blunted affect typical of some schizophrenics misrepresents their underlying emotional experience. Future research into an inhibition hypothesis is recommended. Effects of growth with ethanol on fermentation and membrane fluidity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Saccharomyces cerevisiae HSc was grown with ethanol at concentrations up to 10% (v/v). The immediate effects of additions of externally added ethanol on CO₂ production and O₂ consumption of washed organisms were studied by stopped-flow membrane inlet quadrupole mass spectrometry. Fermentative activities of organisms grown with ethanol (0–5% v/v) showed similar sensitivities to inhibition by ethanol, whereas those grown with 10% (v/v) ethanol had become protected and were markedly less sensitive. The fluidity of subcellular membrane fractions was measured by determination of the temperature dependence of the rotational order parameter of the spin label 5-doxyl stearic acid (free radical) by electron spin resonance. Mitochondria prepared from yeasts grown with 0, 7 and 9% (v/v) ethanol showed similar overall fluidity, although differences in temperature-dependent behaviour indicate altered lipid composition or lateral phase separations. On the other hand the microsomal fraction from organisms grown with 9% ethanol showed a remarkable increase in fluidity. These data suggest that the protective effects of growth with ethanol near the limit of tolerance on fermentative activities may arise from altered plasma membrane fluidity properties.
