Absolute method of measuring the acceleration due to gravity using Doppler radar

It is shown that by using a Doppler radar system the acceleration due to gravity can be measured in terms of the frequency of a microwave oscillator, the velocity of light and the number of Doppler cycles received in a known time. The block diagram of a simple radio-electronic system for making this measurement is described, and some preliminary results are given.     

Localization of intraorbital foreign bodies: an improved photoradiographic method

Corynebacterium parvum, strain 10390, whole organisms were shown to bind to the surface of glass-adherent mouse peritoneal exudate cells in vitro. An HCl extract and a lipid extract of the organism were both capable of inhibiting this binding. The attachment of organisms was not affected by trypsin treatment of the cells, indicating that the plasma membrane receptor is not cell-bound antibody in nature. The binding was inhibited by various sugars, most of which are major components of the cell wall of C. parvum. Removal of divalent cations prevented binding. At room temperature some binding occurred in the presence of magnesium ions alone, whereas both calcium and magnesium ions were required at 4 degrees C. The possibility is discussed that the attachment of C. parvum to the plasma membrane of macrophages may lead directly to their activation.     

Visual slow brain potentials in children with attention deficit disorder

Using a two-stimulus reaction time paradigm, with two separate reward conditions (contingent and noncontingent), we compared slow wave brain potentials (ERPs) in 144 children with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and 30 normal control children. This article reviews the findings during the 900 msec visual warning stimulus. As we had expected, based on ERP work of Forth and Hare (1989) and Raine, Venables and Williams (1990), and on previous work from our own laboratory, the group differences were found in the negative slow wave portions of the ERP complex during the contingent reward condition but not during the noncontingent condition. Aggressive hyperactive subjects with attention deficit disorder (ADDHA) were discriminated from nonaggressive subjects (including control subjects) during the contingent reward condition in the following ways: (1) greater fronto-central negativity (640-900 msec slow wave) and (2) greater right parietal than left parietal negativity (430-750 msec slow wave). All ADD subgroups, when compared to control (CONTR) subjects, showed greater slow wave negativity (700-900 msec) at the midline occipital electrode site during the contingent reward condition. This could be explained in part as an IQ effect on ERPs reflecting the IQ difference between the ADD subgroups and the controls. These slow wave findings seem to relate to attentional problems of these children. They are discussed in terms of a psychobiological model of inhibition/disinhibition and appetitive activation.     

Fibre-optic variable delay lines

A technique is presented for fabricating large numbers of evanescently coupled taps on a single-mode fibre. An output fibre can be adjusted between any of the taps, resulting in a discretely variable delay. The concept was demonstrated with a 7 tap device which had a 2.5 ns delay between taps and a tap uniformity of ± 1.6 dB. A technique for making continuously variable delay lines is presented.     

Free association and the division of labor in psychoanalytic treatment.

Although Freud considered the rule of free association to be fundamental, he was tentative about the recommendations he made concerning other aspects of analysis. Three quarters of a century later, there is still no formal theory of the working arrangements in treatment, and even the fundamental rule is considered by analytic clinicians to be optional. I portray therapy as a dyadic social system and examine its primary task, boundaries, divisions of labor and authority, and culture in order to weigh the importance of the fundamental rule to task achievement. I find several advantages to making free association a role requirement upon the patient, including, inter alia, the freedom it provides the therapist for relaxed observation, counterassociation, and thought.
