High-power etched-facet lasers

We demonstrate, for the first time, laser diodes with anetched facet fabricated by chemically assisted ion beametching, producing 1?7 W pulsed and 470mW CW output power from one facet. The devices were coated and bonded junction-side-up and tested at room temperature. The single 40 ?m stripe, 300 ?m-long devices exhibit 94 mA threshold current and differential quantum efficiencies of 80% pulsed (78% CW).     

SCRATCH RESISTANT POLYIMIDE COATINGS FOR ALUMINOSILICATE GLASS SURFACES

Several polyimide resins were tested as possible scratch resistant coatings for aluminosilicate glass centrifuge tubes. Tubes with siloxane pretreatments provided the best adhesion between the polyimide and glass surface. Resins synthesized with an alkoxysilane group incorporated into the polyimide chain also showed improved adhesion, but the results were not as significant as when the pretreatment was used. Elastic recovery and effective Young's modulus of the polyimide coatings were calculated from nano-scratching. The results indicate that polyimides with a lower modulus, and higher elastic recovery, protected the glass surface best, exhibiting compression of the coating layer. An example was poly-4-4'-oxydiphenylene pyromellitimide (PMDA-ODA), whereas the coatings with a high effective Young's modulus and low elastic recovery ruptured. An example of a failed coating was poly-4,4'-carbonyldiphenylene 3,3',4,4'-biphenylenetetracarboximide (BPDA-DABP) which had low amount of elastic recovery, high effective Young's modulus and a large amount of flaking during macroscratch testing.     

Differential contractile response of cultured microvascular pericytes to vasoactive agents

OBJECTIVE: Microvascular pericytes may contract in two different ways: In the first, a circumferential or radial mechanical force applied at right angles to the long axis of the vessel may constrict the underlying vessel affecting blood flow and transmural pressure. Retraction and elongation of pericyte processes may also occur tangentially and at right angles to the vessel axis and alter microvessel permeability by changing the amount of ablumenal surface covered or the openness of interendothelial junctions. In this study, cultured pericytes were utilized as a model experimental system to determine if vasoactive stimulation changes their shape in a manner consistent with this hypothesis. METHODS: Pericytes cultured from isolated rate capillaries were subjected to angiotensin II and histamine. Their response was monitored by measuring the area of non-yielding substrate covered by the pericytes and the manner in which their shape changed. Shape changes were quantified by calculating the surface area: perimeter perimeter ratios. RESULTS: Histamine significantly reduced surface area covered and the surface area:perimeter ratio. The pericyte processes retracted, resulting in elongated, spindle-shaped cells. These effects were nullified by the H1 blocker diphenhydramine suggesting a receptor-specific response. Angiotensin II also elicited contraction and reduced surface area, but the cells contracted laterally and longitudinally. The surface area: perimeter ratios also decreased. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that pericytes are capable of two types of contractile responses in culture, depending on the specific vasoactive stimulus.     

Investigation of Ni/4H-SiC diodes as radiation detectors with low doped n-type 4H-SiC epilayers

The development of SiC minimum ionising particle (MIP) detectors imposes severe constrains in the electronic quality and the thickness of the material due to the relatively high value of the energy required to produce an electron–hole pair in this material by MIP against the value for Si. In this work, particle detectors were made using semiconductor epitaxial undoped n-type 4H-SiC as the detection medium. The thickness of the epilayer is on the order of 40 μm and the detectors are realised by the formation of a nickel silicide on the silicon surface of the epitaxial layer (Schottky contact) and of the ohmic contact on the back side of 4H-SiC substrate. The low doping concentration (6×10¹³ cm⁻³) of the epilayer allows the detector to be totally depleted at relatively low reverse voltages (100 V). We present experimental data on the charge collection properties by using 5.486 MeV -particles impinging on the Schottky contact. A 100% charge collection efficiency (CCE) is demonstrated for reverse voltages higher than the one needed to have a depletion region equal to the -particle extrapolated range in SiC. The diffusion contribution of the minority change carriers to CCE is pointed out. By comparing measured CCE values to the outcomes of drift–diffusion simulation, values are inferred for the hole lifetime within the neutral region of the charge carrier generation layer.     

Multisource-sputtered ErBa2Cu3O7−x films on single-crystal and buffered crystalline substrates

High-quality superconducting films of erbium-barium-copper-oxide have been produced in a multisource sputtering system on a variety of substrates, including buffered sapphire and silicon wafers as well as various single-crystal materials. Fine-grained polycrystalline films with narrow (<4 K) resistive transitions have been grown on a number of different substrates. The use of erbium in the 12–3 compound leads to improved film morphology and to more forgiving conditions for establishing of the superconducting phase. Sputtered neutral mass spectroscopy (SNMS) yields useful information about the compositional profile of the films.     

Chiroptical activity of holmium pyrogermanate: tetragonal Ho2Ge2O7

Chiroptical luminescence and circular dichroism measurements are reported for single crystals of Ho₂Ge₂O₇. These crystals belong to the tetragonal space group P4,2,2 (or P4₃2₁2) with Z=4. Each Ho³⁺ ion in the crystal structure is coordinated to seven oxygens to form a distorted pentagonal bipyramid. The Ho³⁺ ions exhibit luminescence from several excited multiplet levels; chiroptical luminescence spectra are reported for ⁶I₈ → ⁶F₆, ⁶S₂, and ⁶F₃ at a sample temperature of 10 K. Room-temperature absorption and circular dichroism measurements are reported for the ⁶I₈ → ⁶F₆, ⁵S₂, ⁶F₄, and ⁶F₃ transition regions.     

Postpartum adjustment in first-time mothers: Relations between mood, maternal attitudes, and mother-infant interactions.

Self-report data were obtained from a middle-income sample of first-time mothers during pregnancy and at 1 and 3 months postpartum, and behavioral interactions between the mother and her infant were observed at 3 days and 1, 3, and 16 months postpartum. The main analyses revealed that pregnancy and postpartum mood states together explain a high proportion of the variance in mothers' maternal attitudes during the postpartum, although postpartum mood has the greater predictive power. Additionally, prior experience with children is significantly associated with maternal attitudes at all time points. Moreover, at both 1 and 3 months postpartum, depressed mothers, relative to nondepressed mothers, exhibit fewer affectionate contact behaviors toward their infants and are less likely to respond to infant vocalizations by vocalizing themselves, and, at 3 months, a higher proportion of the depressed mothers had started bottle-feeding their infants. Finally, differences in maternal behavior between depressed and nondepressed mothers during the early postpartum period were no longer apparent at 16 months postpartum. The implications of these findings are discussed with particular reference to the interrelations between prior child-care experience, mood, and maternal responsiveness.
