Many opportunities exist to reduce enteric methane (CH4) and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per unit of product from ruminant livestock. Research over the past century in genetics, animal health, microbiology, nutrition, and physiology has led to improvements in dairy production where intensively managed farms have GHG emissions as low as 1 kg of CO2 equivalents (CO2e)/kg of energy-corrected milk (ECM), compared with >7 kg of CO2e/kg of ECM in extensive systems. The objectives of this review are to evaluate options that have been demonstrated to mitigate enteric CH4 emissions per unit of ECM (CH4/ECM) from dairy cattle on a quantitative basis and in a sustained manner and to integrate approaches in genetics, feeding and nutrition, physiology, and health to emphasize why herd productivity, not individual animal productivity, is important to environmental sustainability. A nutrition model based on carbohydrate digestion was used to evaluate the effect of feeding and nutrition strategies on CH4/ECM, and a meta-analysis was conducted to quantify the effects of lipid supplementation on CH4/ECM. A second model combining herd structure dynamics and production level was used to estimate the effect of genetic and management strategies that increase milk yield and reduce culling on CH4/ECM. Some of these approaches discussed require further research, but many could be implemented now. Past efforts in CH4 mitigation have largely focused on identifying and evaluating CH4 mitigation approaches based on nutrition, feeding, and modifications of rumen function. Nutrition and feeding approaches may be able to reduce CH4/ECM by 2.5 to 15%, whereas rumen modifiers have had very little success in terms of sustained CH4 reductions without compromising milk production. More significant reductions of 15 to 30% CH4/ECM can be achieved by combinations of genetic and management approaches, including improvements in heat abatement, disease and fertility management, performance-enhancing technologies, and facility design to increase feed efficiency and life-time productivity of individual animals and herds. Many of the approaches discussed are only partially additive, and all approaches to reducing enteric CH4 emissions should consider the economic impacts on farm profitability and the relationships between enteric CH4 and other GHG.  相似文献

Twenty-four multiparous Holstein cows [body weight, 759 kg (SD = 30 kg); body condition score, 3.2 (SD = 0.13)] were used in a randomized complete block design to determine the effect of feeding α-amylase during the transition period on rumen fermentation, key metabolic indicators, and lactation performance. Cows were assigned to either a control diet or the control diet supplemented with α-amylase (662 fungal amylase units per gram, AMA) at 0.1% of diet dry matter (DM). Experimental diets were fed from 21 d before expected calving through 21 d in milk. From 22 to 70 d in milk, all cows were fed a similar lactation cow diet. Average pre- and postpartum DM intakes were 12.4 and 17.8 kg/d, respectively, and did not differ between treatments; however, DM intakes during the last week prepartum decreased to a greater degree in AMA than control cows compared with wk −2. Supplementing diets with α-amylase tended to increase proportions of ruminal butyrate prepartum but not postpartum. Treatment differences were not detected for concentrations of insulin in plasma and lipid and glycogen in liver tissue. Prepartum, concentrations of β-hydroxybutyrate and nonesterified fatty acids were increased in cows fed AMA compared with the control diet. Postpartum, concentrations of glucose in plasma tended to be increased by feeding AMA. Increased plasma β-hydroxybutyrate and nonesterified fatty acids pre- but not postpartum and a tendency for increased plasma glucose postpartum demonstrate shifting reliance from lipid- to carbohydrate-based metabolism postpartum in cows fed α-amylase.  相似文献

In order to improve the knowledge about the presence of Salmonella in pork meat in Sardinia (Italy), the prevalence and the sources of Salmonella at 5 pig slaughterhouses (slaughtered pigs and environment) were investigated and the isolates were characterised. A total of 462 samples were collected, 425 from pigs at slaughter and 41 from the slaughterhouse environment. Salmonella was isolated from 26/85 (30.5%) mesenteric lymph nodes, 14/85 (16.4%) colon contents, and from 12/85 (14.1%) carcasses and livers. Salmonella prevalence was 38% (8/21) in samples from surfaces not in contact with meat, and 35% (7/20) in those from surfaces in contact with meat. Thirty-one pigs were identified as carriers of Salmonella in lymph nodes and/or colon content, but of these, only 8 carcasses were positive. A total of 103 Salmonella isolates were serotyped and genotyped. Eight different serotypes were detected; the most common were S. Derby (44/103, 42.7%) and S. Typhimurium (24/103, 23.3%). The most prevalent S. Typhimurium phage type was DT193. Thirty-two isolates were found to be resistant to more than one antimicrobial (MDR). Pulse-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) permitted the resolution of XbaI macrorestriction fragments of the Salmonella strains into 20 distinct pulsotypes. Combined application of a plasmid profiling assay (PPA) and PFGE gave useful additional information to assist in tracing the routes of Salmonella contamination in abattoirs. To reduce Salmonella prevalence some preventive measures should be encouraged: the origin of infected slaughter animals should be identified and direct and cross-contamination of carcasses should be avoided by adhering to HACCP principles in association with good hygiene procedures (GHP).  相似文献

The increased use of computational fluid dynamics code for analysis and design purposes demands high quality experimental data to validate the simulation codes. Experimental data of fluid stratification and stratification break-up phenomena are generated in the frame of OECD/SETH-2 project at the PANDA facility. A new gas concentration measurement system is presented that is based on speed of sound measurements. Speed of sound in gas mixtures is a unique function of the temperature and the fractions of the components and therefore can be used to compute the fractions in varying compositions. The speed of sound is measured indirectly measuring the time of flight of an ultrasound pulse between two ultrasound transducers. The 30 transducers employed proved to be able to withstand the unfavorable conditions inside the facility with temperatures of up to 110 °C and steam that may condense. A frame rate (1 frame = each transducer has been excited) of 1.6 Hz and a helium fraction resolution of 1.5% in steam are achieved.  相似文献

Little has been published so far on the fabrication of porous ceramic films by using the Breath Figure method. In this work we explored the Breath Figure method to obtain ceramics with patterned surfaces. A UV cross-linkable polysiloxane was used to produce Breath Figures with tunable pore size. Pores formation, in terms of size and distribution on the polysiloxane films, were studied as a function of the concentration of the starting solution and time before UV irradiation. The polymeric breath figures were then pyrolyzed in controlled atmosphere to obtain, through the polymer-derived ceramic, PDCs, route the corresponding ceramic preserving the original porous surface. Pyrolysis under different gases, in particular air, nitrogen and ammonia, allows obtaining films of three different ceramic materials: silicon dioxide, SiO2, silicon oxycarbide, SiOC and silicon oxynitride, SiON respectively.  相似文献

To improve the microstructural and electrochemical properties of gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) electrolytes, materials co-doped with 0.5–2?mol% of lithium and cobalt oxides were successfully prepared in a one-step sol gel combustion synthesis route. Vegard's slope theory was used to predict the dopant solubility and the sintering behaviour. The charge and size of the added dopant influence the atom flux near the grain boundary with a change in the lattice parameter. In fact, compared to traditional multi grinding steps, sol gel combustion facilitates molecular mixing of the precursors and substitution of the dopant cations into the fluorite structure, considerably reducing the sintering temperature. Adding precursors of lithium and cobalt, as dopant, increases the GDC densification and reduces its traditional sintering temperature down to 1000–1100?°C, with an improvement of electrochemical properties. Impedance analysis showed that the addition of 2?mol% of lithium or 0.5?mol% of cobalt enhances the conductivity with a consequent improvement of cell performances. High total conductivities of 1.26·10?1 S?cm?1 and 8.72·10?2 S?cm?1 at 800?°C were achieved after sintering at 1000?°C and 1100?°C for 2LiGDC and 0.5CoGDC, respectively.  相似文献

This paper aims to set-up a compatibility criterion for couple of pectins at different degree of methoxylation (DM) based on specific viscosity data, slightly modifying a criterion already proposed in the field of synthetic polymers. Four different commercial pectins were preliminarily characterised by using dilute solution viscosity measurements and molecular weight was calculated from intrinsic viscosity data. Four ternary dilute solutions of pectin at different DM, were also investigated and two compatibility criteria, based on viscosity data, were applied. Data revealed that positive molecular interactions take place when pectins in solution have a different DM (i.e. HM/LM mixtures), whilst an incompatible behaviour was found for similar pectin in solution (i.e. both HM or LM). In addition, in the case of incompatible pairs of pectin, also the apparent average molecular weight of mixed pectin, obtained by measurements carried out on ternary solutions, showed an increase with respect to the additive mixing rule, owing to repulsive forces. On the contrary, owing to attractive forces in case of compatible pectin pairs, the apparent molecular weight is lower than the calculated average.  相似文献

The reaction of zinc oxide (ZnO) with stearic acid (StA) to form zinc stearate (ZnSt) has been investigated experimentally in a model matrix (unvulcanized styrene–butadiene rubber) by using confocal Raman microscopy and FTIR transmission spectroscopy. The heterogeneous nature of the reacting system has been confirmed. The Raman analysis has revealed the core–shell structure of the product, which is formed via the gradual shrinkage of the ZnO core and the concurrent formation of a surrounding ZnSt shell of increasing thickness. FTIR spectroscopy has provided information about the molecular state of aggregation of StA when dissolved in the rubber, as well as quantitative information on the reaction kinetics. The kinetic behaviour of the system has been interpreted using a semi-quantitative heterogeneous reaction model grounded on the Raman imaging results, which was able to catch the essential features of the phenomenon and to simulate reliably the experimental conversion vs time data at three different temperatures.  相似文献

The research aims to investigate the effects of natural and accelerated weathering on polyethylene‐based films. At this regard, monolayer films of low density/linear low density polyethylene blends, containing commercially available organic pigments and an UV absorber of the benzophenone type, have been considered. The samples were weathered on field (natural weathering) or using two different artificial procedures: UV lamp and QUV chamber. Conditioned film samples were, then, analyzed by performing several physical tests taking as‐received films as a reference. Rheological measurements showed an increase in viscosity of weathered sample melts as a consequence of photodegradation phenomena, inducing the formation of double bonds and crosslinks. This latter result was also confirmed by gel content measurements. UV–visible spectroscopic tests indicated that in both cases of natural and artificial weathering an increase of the transmittance of films occurred. Tensile tests indicated the increase of films stiffness, especially in case of samples conditioned using the UV lamp, and a large decrease of the strain at break, both in machine and in transverse directions, especially for film weathered using the QUV chamber. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Evidence supporting the use of second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) in the treatment of acute depression with mixed features (MFs) associated with bipolar disorder (BD) is scarce and equivocal. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and preliminary meta-analysis investigating SGAs in the treatment of acute BD depression with MFs. Two authors independently searched major electronic databases from 1990 until September 2015 for randomized (placebo-) controlled trials (RCTs) or open-label clinical trials investigating the efficacy of SGAs in the treatment of acute bipolar depression with MFs. A random-effect meta-analysis calculating the standardized mean difference (SMD) between SGA and placebo for the mean baseline to endpoint change in depression as well as manic symptoms score was computed based on 95% confidence intervals (CI). Six RCTs and one open-label placebo-controlled studies (including post-hoc reports) representing 1023 patients were included. Participants received either ziprasidone, olanzapine, lurasidone, quetiapine or asenapine for an average of 6.5 weeks across the included studies. Meta-analysis with Duval and Tweedie adjustment for publication bias demonstrated that SGA resulted in significant improvements of (hypo-)manic symptoms of bipolar mixed depression as assessed by the means of the total scores of the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) (SMD −0.74, 95% CI −1.20 to −0.28, n SGA = 907, control = 652). Meta-analysis demonstrated that participants in receipt of SGA (n = 979) experienced a large improvement in the Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) scores (SMD −1.08, 95% CI −1.35 to −0.81, p < 0.001) vs. placebo (n = 678). Publication and measurement biases and relative paucity of studies. Overall, SGAs appear to offer favorable improvements in MADRS and YMRS scores vs. placebo. Nevertheless, given the preliminary nature of the present report, additional original studies are required to allow more reliable and clinically definitive conclusions.  相似文献
