Abstract Patterns of water supply and use in Australia and the U.S.A. differ in many ways. This results in different perceptions concerning the nature of drought and policy approaches to its management. This paper discusses the differences and similarities and explores lessons that policy makers in both countries can learn from one another. A key difference between the two countries is that whereas drought is perceived in Australia essentially in terms of its impact on agriculture, in the U.S. both perceptions and policy are also heavily influenced by the impact of drought on urban communities. This has led to different policy emphases. In 1992 Australia established its National Drought Policy; the U.S. is presently considering the adoption of a national drought policy. These policies highlight drought being accepted as part of natural climate variability, rather than as a natural disaster. They also emphasize the protection of the natural resource base. 相似文献

Commercial greases for space applications usually fulfill the requirements imposed by the severe conditions of use (load, ultrahigh vacuum, speed, etc.). The main requirement is their ability to create an elastohydrodynamic lubrication film, boundary film, or both, for the speed, load, and temperature conditions under which the mechanisms will operate. Three greases, all based on a multiply alkylated cyclopentane (Pennzane®) base oil, were studied. The thickeners were an n-octadecylterephthalamate soap, a lithium soap, and a urea derivative. A four-ball tribometer and a spiral-orbit tribometer were employed to evaluate the greases under ultrahigh vacuum. The results indicated that all three greases yielded very low wear rates and extended lifetimes. In addition, routine physical property data are reported for each grease. 相似文献

Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) is a technique capable of imaging volatile and/or insulating samples in their natural state, without prior specimen preparation. It is thus a powerful potential tool for the study of the structure and dynamics of emulsions and other complex liquid systems, at a resolution greater than that obtainable by conventional optical microscopy. We present images of a variety of liquid systems containing micron-scale and smaller features. The morphology of these systems may be clearly discerned. The contrast observed between the liquid phases was consistent with the model proposed by Stokes et al. (1998). The limits of resolution were determined by sample motion and by beam damage effects; under optimum conditions, resolution of a few tens of nanometers was obtained. This compares favourably with conventional and confocal optical microscopy. In some samples, thin films (solid or liquid) could be observed at the liquid/gas interface. Some of these films were so thin that they did not completely obscure the underlying structure of the bulk sample. 相似文献

After the death of an animal, cell metabolism is controlled locally. The post-mortem oxygen depletion increases the glycolytic activity and lactate production. However, many mechanisms of post-mortem metabolic regulation have not been fully investigated in beef carcasses. In this work, we studied the post-mortem glycolytic behavior (including lactate dehydrogenase) and three dehydrogenase associated to glycolysis (glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and glycerol dehydrogenase) by using cytochemistry techniques in three fast-twitch muscles (M. longissimus dorsi, M. semimembranosus, and M. cutaneus trunci) of carcasses stored at 0 °C. Our results indicate that glycolysis depends on the type of muscle. The post-mortem glycolytic flux and lactate dehydrogenase activity of M. cutaneus trunci was the lowest of the three muscles studied. Of the other dehydrogenases analyzed, only glycerophosphate and glycerol dehydrogenase showed clear cytochemical reaction. Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase was not used by muscles very much. The glycerophosphate dehydrogenase was the strongest enzymatic activity correlated to the post-mortem glycolytic flux. In addition, a relationship between glycerophosphate dehydrogenase and glycerol dehydrogenase was detected by using a multiple regression model. This phenomenon was studied by using bioinformatics tools, suggesting that glycerophosphate dehydrogenase could oxidize the glycerol in bovine fast-twitch muscles. 相似文献

An atoxigenic strain of Penicillium camemberti was superficially inoculated on fermented sausages in an attempt to improve their sensory properties. The growth of this mould on the surface of the sausages resulted in an intense proteolysis and lipolysis, which caused an increase in the concentration of free amino acids, free fatty acids (FFA) and volatile compounds. Many of these were derived from amino acid catabolism and were responsible for the "ripened flavour", i.e. branched aldehydes and the corresponding alcohols, acids and esters. The development of the fungal mycelia on the surface of the sausages also protected lipids from oxidation, resulting in both lower 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) values and lipid oxidation-derived compounds, such as aliphatic aldehydes and alcohols. The sensory analysis of superficially inoculated sausages showed clear improvements in odour and flavour and, as a consequence, in the overall quality of the sausages. The effects of processing treatments (heat, sucrose addition) on the sensory quality of blackcurrant juices prepared from two genetically diverse cultivars (Ben Lomond and Ben Alder) were examined using sensory profiling. Sucrose level had the largest effect on the sensory profile, with heating and cultivar having smaller but still significant effects. Some interaction between sucrose level and heating of the juices was observed in the sensory profile. The results indicate that selection of preferred genotypes remains an important breeding objective in blackcurrant improvement programmes, since the sensory attributes associated with genotype persist, despite processing effects, in the extracted juice. 相似文献

The effect of temperature variation on the environmental fate of organic chemicals can be evaluated in steady-state multimedia box models by expressing chemical partitioning data and reaction rate coefficients as functions of temperature. Using such a modelthetemperature dependence of the characteristic travel distance in air L(A), which is a measure for the atmospheric long-range transport potential of organic chemicals, is calculated. Simulations are reported for a set of 40 chemicals of environmental interest. Increasing temperature is shown to have two opposing effects on L(A). Rates of chemical transformations in the atmosphere (k(air)) and surface media are increased, which reduces L(A). Rates of atmospheric deposition (k(dep)) are reduced leading to increased mobility and L(A). Accordingly, L(A) can monotonically increase or decrease with increasing temperature, or it can have a maximum in the modeled temperature range, but it cannot have a minimum. For chemicals with a strong temperature dependence of k(air) relative to k(dep), L(A) will increase with increasing temperature. Results for selected polychlorinated biphenyls are compared to monitoring data yielding qualitative agreement when chemical properties are adjusted to mean temperatures for the measurement period. The results demonstrate that the temperature dependence of the characteristic travel distance is highly dependent on chemical characteristics and can be counterintuitive. The use of mass balance models is thus essential. The difference between the L(A) values at 5 degrees C and 30 degrees C can be up to a factor of 6. Accordingly, chemical ranking with respect to L(A) can change significantly if performed at different temperatures. Implications of the different temperature dependencies on long-range transport to polar regions are discussed. 相似文献

To investigate the relationships between helminth infections and iron status among school-aged children, 1,115 Tanzanian children in grades 2 through 5 were randomly assigned to treatment or control groups. The children in the treatment group were screened for infection with Schistosoma haematobium and hookworm at baseline, 3 months, and 15 months; infected children were given albendazole against hookworm and praziquantel against schistosomiasis. The control group received a placebo and did not undergo parasitological screening until 15 months after the baseline. Hematological variables were compared between the treatment and control groups. The main results were, first, that the hemoglobin concentration significantly improved after treatment for hookworm (p < .001) by 9.3 g/L in children treated for hookworm only and by 8.8 g/L in children treated for hookworm and schistosomiasis. The ferritin concentration also improved in children treated for schistosomiasis (p = .001) or hookworm (p = .019). Second, a longitudinal analysis of the data from the children in the control group showed that hookworm and schistosomiasis loads were negatively associated with hemoglobin and ferritin concentrations. Moreover, ferritin concentrations increased as C-reactive protein levels increased. Overall, the results showed that anthelmintic treatment is a useful tool for reducing anemia in areas with high hookworm and schistosomiasis endemicity. The empirical relationship between ferritin and C-reactive protein indicated that simple procedures for adjusting cutoff points for the use of ferritin as an indicator of low iron stores were unlikely to be useful in this population. 相似文献

The ability of photochemical models to predict observed coastal chlorine levels and their corresponding effect on ozone formation is explored. Current sea-spray generation functions, a comprehensive gas-phase chlorine chemistry mechanism, and several heterogeneous/multiphase chemical reactions considered key processes leading to reactive chlorine formation are added to an airshed model of the South Coast Air Basin of California. Modeling results reproduce regional sea-salt particle concentrations. The heterogeneous/multiphase chemical reactions do not affect the rate of hydrochloric acid displacement, nor do they enhance aerosol nitrate formation. Chlorine levels in the model are predicted to be an order of magnitude lower than previously observed values at other coastal regions under similar conditions, albeit in much better agreement than previous studies. The results suggest that the inclusion of sea-salt-derived chlorine chemistry might increase morning ozone predictions by as much as 12 ppb in coastal regions and by 4 ppb in the peak domain ozone in the afternoon. The inclusion of anthropogenic sources of chlorine is recommended for future studies, as such sources might elevate ozone predictions even further via direct emission into polluted regions. 相似文献

A successful metal hydride application is closely related to an optimized design of the storage hydrogen system. In previous studies, Hardy and Anton developed scoping and numerical models describing phenomena occurring during the loading process in an alanate storage system having the configuration of a cylindrical shell, tube and fin heat exchanger. In this paper, the numerical tool is used to evaluate the influence of varying the fin thickness and the number of heat exchanger tubes on both the loading and discharging processes. The objective is to evaluate the influence of the geometric parameters of these heat exchangers on the management of heat to be removed/supplied during the sorption process and thus optimize the loading/discharging times; while having the maximum possible volume for containing the hydride and the lightest weight of the storage system. Results showed that equipping the storage system with fins fitted to the heat exchanger tubes is the best design for efficient use of the hydride bed. In the absence of fins, a number of optimal tubes is determined, however, the hydrogen uptake rate is still lower than one obtained for the finned case and there is a reduction of volumetric and gravimetric storage capacities by comparison to the finned system. 相似文献
