A new nuclear fuel cycle is described which provides a long term supply of nuclear fuel for the thermal LWR nuclear power reactors and eliminates the need for long-term storage of radioactive waste. Fissile fuel is produced by the Spallator which depends on the production of spallation neutrons by the interaction of high energy (1 to 2 GeV) protons on a heavy metal target. The neutrons are absorbed in a surrounding natural uranium or thorium blanket in which fissile Pu-239 or U-233 is produced. Advances in linear accelerator technology makes it possible to design and construct a high beam current continuous wave proton linac for production purposes. The target is similar to a sub-critical reactor and produces heat which is converted to electricity for supplying the linac. The Spallator is a self-sufficient fuel producer, which can compete with the fast breeder. The APEX fuel cycle depends on recycling the transuranics and long-lived fission products while extracting the stable and short-lived fission products when reprocessing the fuel. Transmutation and decay within the fuel cycle and decay of the short-lived fission products external to the fuel cycle eliminates the need for long-term geological age storage of fission product waste.  相似文献

Alcohol dependent smokers (N=118) enrolled in an intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program were randomized to a concurrent brief or intensive smoking cessation intervention. Brief treatment consisted of a 15-min counseling session with 5 min of follow-up. Intensive intervention consisted of three 1-hr counseling sessions plus 8 weeks of nicotine patch therapy. The cigarette abstinence rate, verified by breath carbon monoxide, was significantly higher for the intensive treatment group (27.5%) versus the rate for the brief treatment group (6.6%) at 1 month after the quit date but not at 6 months, when abstinence rates fell to 9.1% for the intensive treatment group and 2.1% for the brief treatment group. Smoking treatment assignment did not significantly impact alcohol outcomes. Although intensive smoking treatment was associated with higher rates of short-term tobacco abstinence, other, perhaps more intensive, smoking interventions are needed to produce lasting smoking cessation in alcohol dependent smokers. The selectins are a three-member family of leukocyte, platelet, and endothelial cell adhesion proteins that mediate leukocyte traffic into normal and inflamed tissues. P-selectin is expressed by endothelial cells and platelets, E-selectin by endothelial cells, and L-selectin by circulating leukocytes. To determine if selectin-mediated leukocyte adhesion influences the development of lung reperfusion injury, we studied hemodynamics and respiratory and inert gas exchange in sheep subjected to 3-hour in situ left lung ischemia followed by 6-hour left lung reperfusion with the right lung excluded. Ten minutes before reperfusion, eight animals received EL-246 (1 mg/kg intravenously), a novel antihuman selectin antibody that recognizes and blocks both L- and E-selectin and cross-reacts in sheep. Eight control animals with ischemia received no treatment, whereas three received an isotype-matched antihuman L-selectin antibody that does not cross-react in sheep (DREG-56, 1 mg/kg intravenously). Eight sham control sheep underwent an identical operative procedure but were never subjected to ischemia. Volume-cycled, pressure-limited (20 cm H2O) mechanical ventilation was consistent in all animals throughout the experiment. Six-hour survival in EL-246 recipients (100%) was significantly higher than in either ischemic control sheep (37.5%) or DREG-56 recipients (33.3%), but gravimetric lung water was equivalent in EL-246 recipients (5.9 +/- 1.7 ml/kg), ischemic control sheep (8.3 +/- 3.0 ml/kg), and DREG-56 recipients (9.1 +/- 2.6 ml/kg).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The digestibility of starch provided by coarsely ground corn is often low, which reduces the digestible energy (DE) concentration of the diet. We hypothesized that adding exogenous amylase to diets based on coarsely ground dent corn would increase dietary DE resulting in greater milk production. Total-tract nutrient digestibility was measured in a partially replicated Latin square experiment (6 cows and 4 periods) with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Diets had 26 or 31% starch with or without exogenous amylase (amylase was added to the concentrate mixes at the feed mill). In the low and high starch diets, coarsely ground dry corn (mean particle size = 1.42 mm) provided 43 and 62% of total dietary starch (corn silage provided most of the remaining starch). No treatment interactions were observed. High starch diets had greater dry matter (DM), organic matter, and energy digestibility than low starch diets, and diets with amylase had greater neutral detergent fiber digestibility than diets without amylase. Digestibility of starch averaged 88% and was not affected by treatment. A long-term (98-d) lactation study with 48 Holstein cows (74 d in milk) was conducted using 3 of the diets (low starch diets with and without amylase and the high starch diet without amylase). Addition of amylase to a diet with 26% starch did not affect intake, milk yield, milk composition, body weight, or body condition. Cows fed the diet with 31% starch had greater DM and DE intakes; yields of milk, fat, and protein; and feed efficiency than those fed diets with 26% starch. Milk composition was not affected by starch concentration. Adding exogenous amylase to a lower starch diet did not make the diet nutritionally equivalent to a higher starch diet.  相似文献

We report on the possibility of removing boron (in the form of boric acid) from water by electrochemical means. We explore capacitive de-ionization (CDI) processes in which local changes in pH near the surface of high-surface-area activated carbon fiber (ACF) electrodes during charging are utilized, in order to dissociate boric acid into borate ions which can be electro-adsorbed onto the positive electrode in the CDI cells. For this purpose, a special flow-through CDI cell was constructed in which the feed solution flows through the electrodes. Local pH changes near the carbon electrode surface were investigated using a MgCl2 solution probe in three- (with reference) and two-electrode cells, and described qualitatively. We show that, to a certain extent, boron can indeed be removed from water by CDI.  相似文献

Thermal and hydrothermal degradations of adsorbed sulfur mustard (HD) on activated carbon particles from a chemical protective over-garment were studied. Carbon loaded with 5 wt.% HD was heated in a closed reactor at temperatures up to 160 °C for 0.5–6 h and analyzed by solid-state 13C MAS NMR. On dry carbon at room temperature, HD was stable for months. On a thoroughly pre-wetted carbon, adsorbed HD partially degraded to thiodiglycol (TDG) and TDG-sulfoxide (TDG-SO) within 2–3 months. Heating dry HD-loaded carbon to 160 °C caused partial degradation within 4 h to 1,4-thioxane, along with 1,4-dithiane and vinyl sulfides. Complete degradation within 2.5 h to the same products occurred upon hydrothermal treatment of the HD-loaded carbon, using a water/carbon ratio of 0.3:1. With higher water/carbon ratios of 0.6:1–5:1 at temperatures of 120 °C and above, adsorbed HD hydrolyzed rapidly within 0.5 h. The latter reaction led to the formation of TDG concurrent with either thioxane (at 160 °C) or TDG-SO and TDG-dimer (at 120 °C). A TiC-derived carbon (TiC-CDC) was prepared, and the adsorption of large hexacyanocobaltate and tetrabutylammonium ions of approximately same size was examined on this carbon. While selectively absorbing these large ions, it rejects smaller chloride and ammonium ions in mixed electrolyte solutions. The result demonstrates the important role of electrostatic repulsive forces, space-efficient charge packing and hydrophobic ion interactions with the pore walls of TiC-CDC, similar to what is known for a variety of biological membranes.  相似文献

The need for animals and plants to control microbial colonization is important in the marine environment with its high densities of microscopic propagules and seawater that provides an ideal medium for their dispersal. In contrast to the traditional emphasis on antagonistic interactions of marine organisms with microbes, emerging studies lend support to the notion that health and performance of many marine organisms are functionally regulated and assisted by associated microbes, an ecological concept defined as a holobiont. While antimicrobial activities of marine secondary metabolites have been studied in great depth ex-situ, we are beginning to understand how some of these compounds function in an ecological context to maintain the performance of marine holobionts. The present article reviews two decades of our research on the red seaweed Delisea pulchra by addressing: the defense chemistry of this seaweed; chemically-mediated interactions between the seaweed and its natural enemies; and the negative influence of elevated seawater temperature on these interactions. Our understanding of these defense compounds and the functional roles they play for D. pulchra extends from molecular interactions with bacterial cell signaling molecules, to ecosystem-scale consequences of chemically-controlled disease and herbivory. Delisea pulchra produces halogenated furanones that antagonize the same receptor as acylated homoserine lactones (AHL)-a group of widespread intercellular communication signals among bacteria. Halogenated furanones compete with and inhibit bacterial cell-to-cell communication, and thus interfere with important bacterial communication-regulated processes, such as biofilm formation. In a predictable pattern that occurs at the ecological level of entire populations, environmental stress interferes with the production of halogenated furanones, causing downstream processes that ultimately result in disease of the algal holobiont.  相似文献
