Improving the toilet environment holds promises for increasing the quality of life for elderly and disabled persons. This is one of the goals of the Friendly Rest Room (FRR) project. The study described in this article explored the preference and use of supports in the toilet environment during the entire toilet ritual. An adjustable test frame was built with a toilet and three types of supports. Fourteen subjects were asked which positions they favoured for each support. After using all three supports, they were asked which support they found most comfortable. In general, the preferred positions depended on personal preferences more than on dimensions of the body. It was concluded that there is a preference for vertical supports for sitting down and standing up. During toilet use the side supports were equally appreciated.  相似文献

Although multi-touch applications and user interfaces have become increasingly common in the last few years, there is no agreed-upon multi-touch user interface language yet. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the design of multi-touch user interfaces, this paper presents semiotic analysis of multi-touch applications as an interesting approach to gain deeper understanding of the way users use and understand multi-touch interfaces. In a case study example, user tests of a multi-touch tabletop application platform called MuTable are analysed with the Communicability Evaluation Method to evaluate to what extent users understand the intended messages (e.g., cues about interaction and functionality) the MuTable platform communicates. The semiotic analysis of this case study shows that although multi-touch interfaces can facilitate user exploration, the lack of well-known standards in multi-touch interface design and in the use of gestures makes the user interface difficult to use and interpret. This conclusion points to the importance of the elusive balance between letting users explore multi-touch systems on their own on one hand, and guiding users, explaining how to use and interpret the user interface, on the other.  相似文献

In the domain of security policy enforcement, the concerns of application developers are almost completely ignored. As a consequence, it is hard to develop useful and reliable applications that will function properly under a variety of policies. This paper addresses this issue for application security policies specified as security automata, and enforced through run-time monitoring. Our solution consists of three elements: the definition of an abstract interface to the policy that is being enforced, a sound construct to query that policy, and a static verification algorithm that guarantees absence of security policy violations in critical blocks of code.  相似文献

We present a new genetic algorithm for playing the game of Mastermind. The algorithm requires low run-times and results in a low expected number of guesses. Its performance is comparable to that of other meta-heuristics for the standard setting with four positions and six colors, while it outperforms the existing algorithms when more colors and positions are examined. The central idea underlying the algorithm is the creation of a large set of eligible guesses collected throughout the different generations of the genetic algorithm, the quality of each of which is subsequently determined based on a comparison with a selection of elements of the set.  相似文献

The sorption and degradation of the chlorinated ethenes tetrachloroethene (PCE, 5 mg L(-1)) and trichloroethene (TCE, 10 mg L(-1)) were investigated in zero-valent iron systems (ZVI, 100 g L(-1)) in the presence of compounds common to contaminated groundwater with varying physicochemical properties. The potential competitors were chlorinated ethenes, monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and humic acids. The effect of a complex matrix was tested with landfill contaminated groundwater. Nonlinear Freundlich isotherms adequately described chloroethene sorption to ZVI. In the presence of the more hydrophobic PCE (5 mg L(-1)), TCE sorption and degradation decreased by 33% and 30%, respectively, while TCE (10 mg L(-1)) decreased PCE degradation by 30%. In the presence of nonreactive hydrophobic hydrocarbons (i.e., benzene, toluene, and m-xylene at 100 mg L(-1)), TCE and PCE sorption decreased by 73% and 55%, respectively. The presence of the hydrocarbons had no effect on TCE degradation and increased PCE reduction rates by 50%, suggesting that the displacement of the chloroethenes from the sorption sites by the aromatic hydrocarbons enhanced the degradation rates. Humic acids did not interfere significantly with chloroethene sorption or with TCE degradation but lowered PCE degradation kinetics by 36% when present at high concentrations (100 mg L(-1)). The landfill groundwater with an organic carbon content of 109 mg L(-1) C had no effect on chloroethene sorption but inhibited TCE and PCE degradation by 60% and 70%, respectively.  相似文献

A new on-line analytical setup for 15N measurements of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) has been developed through the coupling of a high-temperature catalytic (Ce(IV)O2) oxidation furnace, a Cu reduction furnace, and an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. The detection limit for accurate delta15N measurements is 20 mg of N L-1. For N-containing compounds dissolved in water, a standard deviation on N concentration measurements of 0.2 mg of N L-1, independent of N concentration, has been found. Reproducibility on delta15N increased with increasing N concentration, with standard deviations varying from 0.8 to 0.1 per thousand in the range of 20-100 mg of N L-1. Salt matrixes, in which the N species might be dissolved, could influence the analysis capacity and continuity, mainly at concentrations above 0.1 M. To our knowledge, this system is the first successful on-line setup capable of performing routine delta15N and N concentration measurements of the TDN pool. Potential applications are large and are believed to result in an increased insight in N cycling and dissolved organic nitrogen behavior in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Hydrogen is since long seen as an outstanding candidate for an environmentally acceptable, future aviation fuel. Given that most comprehensive studies on its use in aviation were performed over two decades ago, the current article evaluates its potential as a fuel for long range transport aircraft at current and future technology levels. The investigations show that hydrogen has the potential to reduce the energy utilisation of long range transport aircraft by approximately 11%. The use of hydrogen namely allows a much smaller wing area and span since the wing size is not restricted by its fuel storage capacity. At a given price per unit energy content, the smaller wings lead to a reduction of around 30% in take-off gross weight and 3% in direct operating costs for a given fuel price per energy content. The hydrogen-fuelled aircraft are furthermore slightly more sensitive to a possible reduction in operating empty weight in the future and 20% less sensitive to further improvements in engine thrust specific fuel consumption.  相似文献

In this paper, specific cases for the interaction between the future electricity-generation mix and a newly-developing hydrogen-production infrastructure is modelled with the model E-simulate. Namely, flexible integrated-gasification combined-cycle units (IGCC) are capable of producing both electricity and hydrogen in different ratios. When these units are part of the electricity-generation mix and when they are not operating at full load, they could be used to produce a certain amount of hydrogen, avoiding the costly installation of new IGCC units for hydrogen production. The same goes for the massive introduction of renewable energies (especially wind), possibly generating excess electricity from time to time, which could then perhaps be used to produce hydrogen electrolytically.  相似文献

Vane-type demisters are attractive droplet separators because they combine robustness and sufficient separation efficiency with a low-pressure drop, a high capacity and some fouling resistance. Experience shows that their optimal operation is close to the maximum capacity point and even that at this point the separation efficiency is better at higher pressures. This article proposes a generalized expression this point, as a function of gas and liquid flow and properties, drawing on knowledge about other, related, unit operations, namely cyclone separators and distillation towers. The generalized expression relates the dimensionless velocity with the Archimedes number and a flow parameter. The expression builds on earlier work on a criterion for the inception of droplet entrainment in two-phase film flow, pioneered by Ishii and Grolmes, and is supported by considerable experimental work published over the last 50 years.  相似文献
