A technique is proposed for specifying universal quantification and existential quantification (combined with negation) in a two-dimensional (graphical) database query language. Unlike other approaches that provide set operators to simulate universal quantification, this technique allows a direct representation of universal quantification. Syntactic constructs for specifying universal and existential quantifications, two-dimensional translation of universal quantification to existential quantification (with negation), and translation of existentially quantified two-dimensional queries to relational queries are presented. The resulting relational queries can be processed directly by many existing database systems. The authors claim that this technique renders universal quantifications easy to understand. To substantiate this claim, they provide a simple, easy-to-follow guideline for constructing universally quantified queries  相似文献

The purpose of this review is to present a 4-year experience with the vacuum pack technique of temporary abdominal closure. From April 1992 to December 1996, 171 vacuum packs were performed on 93 patients. Eighty-seven vacuum packs were performed on 38 general surgical patients, and 84 vacuum packs were performed on 55 trauma patients. Overall hospital mortality was 32 per cent. Methods of achieving permanent wound closure varied in 73 patients. Four patients (4.3%) developed enterocutaneous fistulae; four patients developed intra-abdominal abscesses (4.3%). There were no eviscerations. Management of the complicated intra-abdominal process is discussed: 1) the decision to manage the abdomen in an open fashion; 2) which method of temporary closure to use; 3) subsequent explorations; 4) when the abdomen should be closed; 5) which type of closure to use; and 6) when the abdominal wall should be revised (herniorrhaphy). The vacuum pack is the method of choice for open abdomen management and temporary abdominal closure at our institution. With careful subsequent management, good patient outcome can be achieved.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To characterize Seprafilm bioresorbable membrane and assess its efficacy and safety in reducing adhesions. DESIGN: In vitro and animal studies designed to provide precise control of tissue trauma and closely approximate clinically relevant conditions in abdominal surgery. SETTING: Experimental laboratories, USA. SUBJECTS: Experimental animals, principally rats and rabbits. INTERVENTIONS: The rat cecal abrasion or sidewall injury model evaluated the efficacy of seprafilm in the presence of blood and irrigation solutions, in multiple layers, under ischemic conditions, and in adhesion reformation. A rabbit anastomosis model tested the effect of the membrane on wound healing, and a series of challenge tests determined its toxicology, immunogenicity, and biocompatibility. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Incidence and severity of adhesions; mutagenicity; pyrogenicity; irritation effects; systemic toxicity. RESULTS: Seprafilm significantly reduced the number of cecal adhesions (p < 0.001) and the number of animals with severe adhesions (p < 0.001) when compared with nontreated controls, even in the presence of bleeding. The membrane also significantly decreased the number of animals with any adhesions (p < 0.001). Seprafilm maintains efficacy when used with excess irrigation solutions, when layered, and under ischemic conditions. Among rats tested for adhesion reformation, the treated group had a significantly larger proportion of adhesion-free animals than the untreated group, 72% versus 28%, (p = 0.007). Seprafilm did not impair wound healing in anastomosis and is nontoxic, nonmutagenic, nonimmunogenic, nonpyrogenic, nonirritating, and biocompatible. CONCLUSION: Preclinical studies have shown that Seprafilm is safe and effective in reducing postsurgical adhesions. Seprafilm meets the requirements of an ideal barrier and can be a useful adjuvant in abdominal and pelvic surgery.  相似文献

An actively stabilised, continuous-wave, 1.94 /spl mu/m Tm:YAlO laser is presented. Optoelectronic negative feedback stabilisation is utilised to prevent relaxation-oscillation-driven spiking. The amplitude stability of the laser is found to be very robust against cavity perturbation and parasitic radiation back-reflection, making it attractive for practical applications.  相似文献

When a person becomes so involved in details that they begin to lose sight of the big picture, it is said "they can't see the forest for the trees!" The wavelet transform is a relatively new signal processing tool that allows us to efficiently analyze the small details and the big picture. Wavelets have been shown to be very useful for signal compression, denoising and pattern recognition. This should not be surprising since they provide an efficient method for analyzing nonstationary signals at varying frequencies. With wavelets, we can analyze low frequencies (the forest) at very fine frequency resolution, and we can analyze high frequencies (the trees) at a very fine time resolution. Indeed, wavelets do allow us to see the forest and the trees!.  相似文献

Like other chromatographic techniques, retention factor, k, in micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) is directly related to solute partition coefficient and the chromatographic phase ratio as k = Kphi. Unlike conventional chromatography, however, the phase ratio and partition coefficient can be accurately determined in MEKC for a given micellar pseudostationary phase. This means that retention factor in MEKC can be predicted for solutes with known micelle-water partition coefficients without any prior experimentation. In this paper, the use of this simple relationship for prediction of retention behavior in MEKC is examined. The principle of additivity of functional group contribution to partitioning is used to calculate the micelle-water partition coefficient, Kmw, for SDS micellar pseudophase. The micellar substituent constants for 20 functional groups (training set) were determined. Using these substituent constants, the Kmw and retention factors for a group of 80 neutral solutes (test set) were predicted. The linear plot of predicted versus observed log k had an R2 = 0.97 and a slope equal to 1.01. It is shown that the retention times (thus chromatograms) in MEKC can be predicted from the calculated retention factors after only one initial experiment to measure teo and t(mc) under the experimental conditions.  相似文献

Newly developed software additions to the three-dimensional dynamic image analysis system, 3D-DIAS, are described for simultaneously reconstructing and motion analyzing in three dimensions the outer surface, nucleus and pseudopods of living, crawling cells. This new system is then used to describe for the first time a nuclear behavior cycle in translocating Dictyostelium discoideum amoebae and to investigate the role of pseudopod extension in this process. The nuclear behavior cycle is tuned to the two phases of the general cell behavior cycle [Wessels et al., 1994], and includes nuclear migration both in the z- and in the x,y-axes from the proximal border of the prior anterior pseudopod to the proximal border of a newly expanding anterior pseudopod. Nuclear migration is cued by pseudopod-substratum contact, achieves velocities in excess of 50 microm/min, and is accompanied by characteristic changes in nuclear shape. The rules and characteristics of nuclear behavior are demonstrated to be intact in two mutants affecting pseudopod formation, a myosin IB null mutant (myoB-) and a myosin II heavy chain phosphorylation mutant (3XALA). The rules and characteristics of nuclear migration, however, are disrupted upon dissolution of microtubules by colcemid. Together the above results demonstrate that the newly developed 3D-DIAS system can be used to gain new insights into the dynamic changes in the intracellular 3D architecture associated with cellular translocation.  相似文献

Anger may have greater effects on chronic pain severity than other negative emotions and may do so by increasing muscle tension near the site of injury (symptom-specific reactivity). For patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP), relevant muscles are lower paraspinals (LP). Ninety-four CLBP patients and 79 controls underwent anger and sadness recall interviews. EMG and cardiovascular activity were recorded. Patients exhibited greater LP tension increases during anger and slower recovery than controls. Only patients showed greater LP reactivity during anger than sadness. For both groups, trapezius reactivity during anger and sadness did not differ. LP reactivity to anger correlated with everyday pain severity for patients. Anger-induced symptom-specific LP reactivity may be linked to chronic pain aggravation among CLBP patients.
