It is commonly believed that human resource investments can yield positive performance-related outcomes for organizations. Utilizing the theory of organizational equilibrium (H. A. Simon, D. W. Smithburg, & V. A. Thompson, 1950; J. G. March & H. A. Simon, 1958), the authors proposed that organizational inducements in the form of competitive pay will lead to 2 firm-level performance outcomes--labor productivity and customer satisfaction--and that financially successful organizations would be more likely to provide these inducements to their employees. To test their hypotheses, the authors gathered employee-survey and objective performance data from a sample of 126 large publicly traded U.S. organizations over a period of 3 years. Results indicated that (a) firm-level financial performance (net income) predicted employees' shared perceptions of competitive pay, (b) shared pay perceptions predicted future labor productivity, and (c) the relationship between shared pay perceptions and customer satisfaction was fully mediated by employee morale. Conventional and digital holographies are proving to be increasingly important for studies of marine zooplankton and other underwater biological applications. This paper reports on the use of a subsea digital holographic camera (eHoloCam) for the analysis and identification of marine organisms and other subsea particles. Unlike recording on a photographic film, a digital hologram (e-hologram) is recorded on an electronic sensor and reconstructed numerically in a computer by simulating the propagation of the optical field in space. By comparison with other imaging techniques, an e-hologram has several advantages such as three-dimensional spatial reconstruction, non-intrusive and non-destructive interrogation of the recording sampling volume and the ability to record holographic videos. The basis of much work in optics lies in Maxwell's electromagnetic theory and holography is no exception: we report here on two of the numerical reconstruction algorithms we have used to reconstruct holograms obtained using eHoloCam and how their starting point lies in Maxwell's equations. Derivation of the angular spectrum algorithm for plane waves is provided as an exact method for the in-line numerical reconstruction of digital holograms. The Fresnel numerical reconstruction algorithm is derived from the angular spectrum method. In-line holograms are numerically processed before and after reconstruction to remove periodic noise from captured images and to increase image contrast. The ability of the Fresnel integration reconstruction algorithm to extend the reconstructed volume beyond the recording sensor dimensions is also shown with a 50% extension of the reconstruction area. Predictions of the influence of the solvent quality (χ), the segment–substrate interaction parameter (χps), the chain length (N), and the end cap–substrate interaction parameter (Δ) on the equilibrium‐adsorbed amount from a dilute solution of end‐functionalized homopolymers (Γ) onto a solid substrate, when both the end cap and polymer segments compete for sites on the surface, were made through application of the self‐consistent‐field (SCF) theory. These predictions were tested and evaluated through measurement of the equilibrium‐adsorbed amount, from a dilute solution of single‐end‐functionalized custom synthesized relatively monodisperse polystyrenes, possessing an end group (X) chosen to interact with a mildly acidic inorganic substrate (Aerosil 130) and a mildly basic inorganic substrate (aluminum oxide C) through dipole–dipole interactions, hydrogen‐bonding interactions, and specific acid–base interactions, as a function of χ, χps, Δ, and N. Patients with Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) do not always receive a genetic diagnosis after routine screening in clinical practice. One of the reasons for this could be that the causal mutation is not present in the cell types that are usually tested—whole blood, dermal fibroblasts or saliva—but is only in the affected tissue. Such mutations are called somatic, and can occur in a given cell at any stage of development after conception. They will then be present in all subsequent daughter cells. Here, we investigated the presence of somatic mutations in HSCR patients. For this, whole-exome sequencing and copy number analysis were performed in DNA isolated from purified enteric neural crest cells (ENCCs) and blood or fibroblasts of the same patient. Variants identified were subsequently validated by Sanger sequencing. Several somatic variants were identified in all patients, but causative mutations for HSCR were not specifically identified in the ENCCs of these patients. Larger copy number variants were also not found to be specific to ENCCs. Therefore, we believe that somatic mutations are unlikely to be identified, if causative for HSCR. Here, we postulate various modes of development following the occurrence of a somatic mutation, to describe the challenges in detecting such mutations, and hypothesize how somatic mutations may contribute to ‘missing heritability’ in developmental defects. 相似文献

Nanoliter-sized liquid drops can be accurately metered inside hydrophilic microchannels using a combination of hydrophobic surface treatment and air pressure. The technique involves spontaneously filling the microchannels up to a hydrophobic region and splitting a liquid drop by injecting air through a hydrophobic side channel. The hydrophobic regions are fabricated by using a patterned metal mask on a substrate. The patterned substrate is immersed in an isooctane solution containing 1H,1H,2H,2H-per-fluorodecyltrichlorosilane to form hydrophobic patches on the exposed surface. Stripping the metal mask leaves the hydrophobic patches and restores the hydrophilic substrate surface. Precise and accurate liquid volumes, ranging from 0.5 to 125 nanoliters, have been metered using this technique. Theoretical predictions of the pressure needed to meter drops compare well with the experimental values. 相似文献

It has been shown that nonlinear scattering can be stimulated from microbubble contrast agents at high-transmit frequencies (14-32 MHz). This work was extended to demonstrate the feasibility of nonlinear contrast imaging through modifications of existing ultrasound biomicroscopy linear B-scan imaging instrumentation. In this study, we describe the development and evaluation of prototype coherent flow imaging instrumentation for nonlinear microbubble imaging using transmit frequencies from 10 to 50 MHz. Phantom validation experiments were conducted to demonstrate color and power flow imaging using nonlinear 10 MHz (subharmonic) scattering induced by a 20 MHz transmit frequency. In vivo flow imaging of a rabbit ear microvessel was successfully performed. This work indicates the feasibility of performing flow imaging at high frequencies using nonlinear scattering from microbubbles. 相似文献

The kinetics of naphthalene-2-sulfonic acid (2-NSA) adsorption by granular activated carbon (GAC) were measured and the relationships between adsorption, desorption, bioavailability and biodegradation assessed. The conventional Langmuir model fitted the experimental sorption isotherm data and introduced 2-NSA degrading bacteria, established on the surface of the GAC, did not interfere with adsorption. The potential value of GAC as a microbial support in the aerobic degradation of 2-NSA by Arthrobacter globiformis and Comamonas testosteroni was investigated. Using both virgin and microbially colonised GAC, adsorption removed 2-NSA from the liquid phase up to its saturation capacity of 140 mg/g GAC within 48 h. However, between 83.2% and 93.3% of the adsorbed 2-NSA was bioavailable to both bacterial species as a source of carbon for growth. In comparison to the non-inoculated GAC, the combination of rapid adsorption and biodegradation increased the amount (by 70-93%) of 2-NSA removal from the influent phase as well as the bed-life of the GAC (from 40 to >120 d). A microbially conditioned GAC fixed-bed reactor containing 15 g GAC removed 100% 2-NSA (100 mg/l) from tannery wastewater at an empty bed contact time of 22 min for a minimum of 120 d without the need for GAC reconditioning or replacement. Aggregating fine particulate matter is common practice in many industrial solid-liquid separation processes. Data obtained in this work on dilute aqueous dispersions of model colloidal polystyrene latex spheres indicate that depletion flocculation, which uses non-adsorbing polymer, can yield very compact aggregates. Flocculation of the negatively charged latex particles was induced by the addition of a poly(acrylic acid) at pH 10. The structural compactness of the latex flocs formed in the dilute dispersions was characterised using small-angle static light scattering in terms of mass fractal dimensions. Rheological measurements on the concentrated latex dispersions in the presence of the non-adsorbing polyacid showed Bingham yield stress behaviour. Both the compactness and strength of the latex flocs were found to be significantly dependent upon the level of the polyacid, as well as the concentration of the initial particles. In particular, as the level of the polyacid was raised the floc compactness decreased, whereas its strength increased. They were both seen to level off at high polymer concentrations. Atomic force microscopy measurements were made at varying concentrations of the polyacid to provide a qualitative explanation of the observed floc structural behaviour of the dilute dispersions. By combining the fractal dimension and the Bingham yield stress we were also able to estimate the energy required to separate the flocs into single units in the concentrated dispersions. It was concluded that the interparticle interaction energy is the key to understanding the dependence of both the floc structure and strength on the polymer concentration. 相似文献

Targeted contrast agents and ultrasound imaging are now used in combination for the assessment and tracking of biomarkers in animal models in vivo. These applications have triggered interest in the understanding and prediction of the ultrasound echoes from contrast agents attached to cells. This study describes the reflection enhancement due to microbubbles bound on a gelatin surface. The reflection enhancement was measured using ultrasound pulses at high frequency (40 MHz) and low pressure (38 kPa peak-negative pressure) allowing a linear approximation to be applied. The observed reflection coefficient increased with the number of microbubbles, until reaching saturation at 0.9 when the surface coverage fraction was 35%. A multiple scattering model assuming that the targeted microbubbles are confined within an infinitesimally thin layer appeared suitable in predicting the reflection coefficient even at very high surface densities. These results could permit the optimization of the sensitivity of high frequency ultrasound to targeted contrast agents. 相似文献
