Properties of thin TiN films deposited onto stainless steel by an in-line dry coating process

A new coil-coating pilot plant, capable of utilizing ion plating, sputtering and plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) processes, independently or in series, was developed and optimum conditions for TiN, TiC, Al_xO_y, SiO_x and Cr coating were established. This paper is mostly concerned with the results of characterization (conducted in parallel by the authors′ two institutions) of TiN films deposited by ion plating or sputtering onto type-304 stainless steel strips. In particular, the dependence of the basic properties such as chemical composition, structure, adhesion, and color on the coating process are discussed with respect to anti-corrosion, anti-wear, and decorative applications. TiN coatings with a very attractive gold coloration were obtained; they performed well in wear testing, but did not show satisfactory corrosion resistance. However, it was found that the latter can be improved significantly by depositing a SiO_x, top layer by PACVD above the TiN coating. Thus the in-line dry coating processes are capable of producing highly functional steel surfaces with decorative color and high corrosion resistance.     

Westernized food habits and concentrations of serum lipids in the Japanese

It has recently been reported that there exists a new 'RING-finger' protein family among the zinc-finger (Zf) proteins. Previously, we had isolated the mouse Mel-18 cDNA (mMel-18) encoding the nuclear RING-finger protein that exhibits an ability to bind to a nonspecific DNA column. Here, we have isolated and characterized the human Mel-18 cDNA (hMel-18) using the mMel-18 cDNA as a probe. The deduced hMel-18 protein contains 344 amino acids (38 kDa) with a RING-finger motif, a helix-loop-helix (HLH)-like structure and a Pro/Ser-rich region. The hMel-18 gene is conserved among vertebrates. Its mRNA is highly expressed in placenta, lung and kidney, but the level is low in liver, pancreas and skeletal muscle. Using in situ hybridization, we mapped hMel-18 to band q22 of chromosome 12. It is possible that the Mel-18/bmi-1 gene family represents a mammalian homologue of the Drosophila polycomb gene group.     

Intramolecular triplet energy migration in poly(2-vinylnaphthalene) and poly(naphthylalkyl methacrylate)s in solid solution: Effects of side chain length

Summary The effect of side chain length on intramolecular triplet energy migration of naphthalene containing polymers was investigated by a delayed fluorescence (DF) spectroscopy for the solid solution of the polymers. The degree of triplet energy migration depends strongly on whether the chromophores are directly attached to the main chain or not.     

An over 2200-km coherent transmission experiment at 2.5 Gb/s usingerbium-doped-fiber in-line amplifiers

A 2223 km transmission distance was achieved with a 2.5-Gb/s heterodyne detection system that used erbium-doped-fiber in-line amplifiers and dispersion-shifted single-mode fibers. Twenty-five amplifiers, placed at approximately 80-km intervals, offered a total gain of more than 440 dB. Receiver sensitivity was -42.0 dBm, with only a 4.2-dB penalty from the initial sensitivity achieved by the back-to-back configuration     

Perspective for clinical laboratory management and its systematization--effects of the systematization of clinical laboratory management

There are a large number of ideas concerning the systematization of clinical laboratory management. Therefore many types of laboratory systems have been constructed. As our hospital is not large, we adopted a small scale laboratory system. In introducing it, we expected not only an increase in value-added labor productivity by automating laboratory tests, but also an improvement in technologist's cost awareness. Consequently, new system equipment has itself performed the former in many sections, but not the latter. Improvement in cost awareness was caused by the technologist's routine work in managing reagent and material stocks. We found that this soft-type systematization has been more important than the advanced hard-type system.     

An integrated laser blood flowmeter

We have constructed a very small and lightweight blood flowmeter using micromachining and surface mounting techniques for a wearable health monitoring system. The hybrid integrated structure of the optical system incorporates a InGaAsP-InP distributed feedback laser diode (DFB-LD) with a wavelength of 1310 nm, an edge-illuminated photodiode (PD) and a polyimide waveguide on silicon substrate (2 mm /spl times/ 3 mm). This integrated flowmeter can be positioned directly on the tissue and permits real-time monitoring of capillary microcirculation. In-vivo measurements of blood perfusion in a finger confirm the feasibility of the blood flowmeter.     

Analysis of higher information density pregroove model by boundary element method

Using the boundary element method, results of the push-pull ratio of differential output signals from an optical disc pregroove model by simulation are presented. The possibility of achieving higher information density by reducing the track pitch and the beam spot is demonstrated.<>     

Application-aware buffer management: new metrics and techniques

An important issue for video transmission over IP networks is preservation of perceived video quality despite packet loss. Packet loss can be detrimental to compressed video. However, reducing packet loss to a very low level is difficult with current loss control techniques. Furthermore, even a very low objective loss probability can still seriously distort perceived video quality. This paper presents two buffer management schemes using video characteristics. They increase maximum loss tolerance for a desired level of video quality, providing better quality at equal loss ratios, when compared to a conventional buffer management scheme. Meanwhile, service fairness and network efficiency are also improved.     

Free volume and permeabilities of O2 and H2 in Nafion membranes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells

The mechanism of gas permeation in Nafion membranes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells has been investigated from the viewpoint of free volume. Three different samples, a membrane with ionic exchange capacity (IEC) = 0.92 meq/g, and recast samples with IEC = 0.92 and 1.00 meq/g were used after drying. Free volume was quantified using the positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) technique and gas permeabilities were measured for O₂ and H₂ as functions of temperature and relative humidity. Good linear correlations between the logarithm of the permeabilities at different temperatures and reciprocal free volume indicate that gas permeation in dry Nafion is governed by the free volume. Nevertheless permeabilities are much smaller than the corresponding flexible chain polymer with a similar free volume size due to stiff chains of the perfluoroethylene backbone. In highly hydrated Nafion above 60% relative humidity, where the O₂ permeability varies oppositely to the free volume, gas permeation proved to be controlled by the gradual increase in overall flexibility of the Nafion–water system.     

Use of external conduit impairs liver function in patients with biliary atresia

An external conduit (stoma) for patients with biliary atresia has been used to prevent postoperative cholangitis. Thirty-two patients with biliary atresia who had hepatic portoenterostomies with external conduits were studied retrospectively with respect to frequency and severity of postoperative cholangitis or stoma bleeding. Changes in their liver enzyme levels, and total bilirubin (TB) levels were measured before and after closure of the stoma. Cholangitis was observed in 20 patients (62.5%), and major hemorrhage from the stoma site was seen in 14 patients (43.8%) prior to closure. Levels of liver enzymes such as glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GTP), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) improved significantly within 1 month after closure of the stoma, and remained low thereafter. The TB concentration was the only liver function that did not change significantly following closure. In summary, the authors do not recommend an external conduit in patients with biliary atresia because it is not an effective way of reducing the incidence of postoperative cholangitis, and it may be deleterious to liver function.
