Production of human growth hormone by Lactococcus lactis

A synthetic gene coding for human growth hormone was expressed in Lactococcus lactis. The presence of the recombinant protein was assayed and quantified using ELISA tests. Human growth hormone was detected at high concentrations and displayed a biological activity similar to the one shown by commercial human growth hormone.     

Gold extraction by chlorination using a pyrometallurgical process

The feasibility to recover the gold present in alluvial material, by means of a chlorination process, using chlorine as a reactive agent, has been studied. The influence of temperature and reaction time was studied through changes in the reactant solid. The techniques used to characterize the mineral samples and the reaction residues were stereomicroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence and scanning electronic microscopy. Results indicate that gold extraction is favored by increasing, both, the temperature and the reaction time. The best recovery values were of 98.23% at 873 K and 3600 s and of 98.73% at 873 K and 5400 s, with very low attack of the matrix containing the metal. The powder of pure gold was not chlorinated at this temperature level.     

Spanish Content on Hospital Websites: An Analysis of U.S. Hospitals' in Concentrated Latino Communities

This study explores the nature and extent of Spanish language translation of hospital websites. A quantitative content analysis of 121 U.S. hospital websites located in Hispanic communities was conducted. Results indicate that a significant number of U.S. hospitals fail on their websites to offer equal content for Spanish language users. The study also examines several factors potentially associated with the incidence of website translation. First, organizational factors such as hospital size, ownership type and formal statements of diversity commitment are investigated. Second, demographic factors such as county population size and Hispanic population size are also considered. Hispanics' use of the Internet, the digital divide, culture's impact on Internet use, and eHealth provide a background for discussion of the findings.     

Harmonic modelling of PV systems for probabilistic harmonic load flow studies

Probabilistic harmonic load flow (HLF) is currently enjoying renewed popularity. This is not surprising since in the near future, thousands of photovoltaic (PV) systems will be integrated into distribution systems. However, as yet, there is no model capable of explaining PV harmonic current behaviour in probabilistic HLF studies. To fill this gap, the harmonic modelling of PV systems proposed in this paper has three key points. First, it provides an effective model of the relationship between PV harmonic current emission and background harmonic voltages. Second, it statistically characterises PV harmonic currents (relative magnitude and phase angle) at different fundamental‐frequency current output intervals using historical time‐series data. In this statistical characterisation, the first fifth moments of each PV harmonic current are used to accurately approximate the raw probability density function (PDF) by means of the Legendre series. Finally, the third key point of this harmonic modelling is a method capable of determining the distribution functions of PV harmonic currents (absolute magnitude and phase angle), based on the statistical characterisation and a fundamental‐frequency probabilistic PV model. Using Fuzzy Cost‐Based FMEA,GRA and Profitability Theory for Minimizing Failures at a Healthcare Diagnosis Service

This paper proposes an integrated approach to identify, evaluate and improve the potential failures in a service setting. This integrated approach combines Fuzzy cost‐based service‐specific FMEA (FCS‐FMEA), Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) and profitability theory for better prioritization of the service failures by considering cost as an important issue and using the profitability theory in a way that the corrective actions costs are taken into account. Considering profitability with FCS‐FMEA and GRA reduces the losses caused by failure occurrence. Besides, a maximization linear mathematical problem is used to select the best mix of failures to be repaired. We apply our approach to an academic example concerning the potential failures diagnosis of the Internal Medicine service of a hospital located in Seoul, Korea. We applied our approach and solved the associated maximization problem by a commercial solver, producing an optimal solution which indicates the most convenient mix of failures to be repaired by considering available budget.
