The excitation coefficients of modes in a circular corrugated waveguide that arise when dominant modes are incident from a cluster of four square waveguides are calculated. Mono-pulse-like radiation patterns arise when modes in the input guides are appropriately phased. Factors influencing the crosspolar performance of the feed are discussed, and the dependence of the excitation coefficients on waveguide and junction parameters is predicted.     

Managing patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis

Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated a continuing increase in the prevalence of vulvovaginal candidiasis. Although in the past most of these infections were caused by Candida albicans, an increasing percentage are caused by non-albicans Candida species that are less sensitive to the most frequently used antifungal agents. An accurate diagnosis of these infections and the subsequent choice of the most appropriate therapy can only be made after a thorough evaluation of the patient. Successful treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis is dependent on compliance with therapy; thus, the treatment regimen chosen should fit the patient's daily lifestyle. Newer single-dose regimens offer the option of completing therapy with a single treatment for most patients with uncomplicated vaginal candidiasis. Use of topical agents avoids the potential systemic adverse effects and drug interactions that have been noted with oral antifungals. Patient education and support can also enhance satisfaction with the treatment plan and promote compliance.

Characterization and catalytic gasification of the aqueous by-product from vacuum pyrolysis of biomass

Spruce wood residues were treated in a vacuum pyrolysis Process Development Unit with a throughput capacity of 28 kg/h. Two aqueous phase condensate samples with COD concentration varying between 190 and 255 g/L were produced and sequentially extracted with dichloromethane and ethylacetate solvents. The soluble organic matter was composed of acidic, phenolic, alcoholic and ketonic compounds. The insoluble fraction was sequentially distilled at 100 and 110°C under atmospheric pressure. Mainly water was recovered in the first distillate, while the second distillate contained 30.4% formic and acetic acids, 69.4% water and 0.2% residual organic compounds. The distillation residue was rich in oxygen and was essentially insoluble in any organic solvent. The two aqueous phase pyroligneous samples were treated in Bat-telle's Thermochemical Environmental Energy System (TEESr?), a registered service mark of Onsite*Ofsite, Inc. of Duarte, California, U.S.A. The results of the tests showed that similar results were obtained with either feedstock. In batch tests a COD reduction of 99% was achieved. The product gas composition was typically about 49% methane, 5% hydrogen, 1 % ethane and 45% carbon dioxide. Tests in a continuous stirred-tank reactor produced reproducible data which can be used for process scale-up. Catalyst lifetime was identified as needing further improvement. The preliminary results demonstrated the technical feasibility of the catalytic gasification process as a useful step in the recovery of energy from the secondary condensate stream and the cleanup of the by-product water from vacuum pyrolysis of wood.     

Using Stacked Bitlines and Hybrid ROM Cells to Form ROM and SRAM-ROM With Increased Storage Density

ROM cell architectures are proposed that have roughly 20% greater storage density in the cell array compared to that of a conventional ROM. Increased density is achieved by exploiting the multiple interconnect layers now available in common logic processes and by using multiple ROM cell types in combination. The storage density of arrays of these hybrid ROM cells increases further as more interconnect layers become available. In addition, a new SRAM-ROM architecture is presented that capitalizes on these techniques to add ROM capability to a conventional SRAM cell with no additional transistors in the memory cell and little or, in some cases, no impact on the cell area

The use of external, noninvasive pacing for the termination of supraventricular tachycardia in the emergency department setting

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine the potential feasibility of external cardiac pacing for the termination of sustained supraventricular tachycardia in the emergency department setting. TYPE OF PARTICIPANTS: Three men and two women (mean age, 34 years) who presented to the ED with a narrow-complex, hemodynamically stable tachycardia that was later proven to be supraventricular in origin. INTERVENTION: Each patient underwent external overdrive pacing using a modified external pacemaker at a pulse amplitude of 120 mA and a rate between 240 and 280 pulses per minute. RESULTS: In four patients, external cardiac pacing was able to successfully terminate the tachycardia without complication. In one patient, the pacemaker was not able to terminate the tachycardia. CONCLUSION: We conclude that external, noninvasive pacing is a feasible means of terminating supraventricular tachycardia in the ED setting.     

A magnetometer system to estimate location and size of long,horizontal ferrous rods

An experimental instrument is described which explicitly estimates location of ferrous rods parallel to a plane of measurement by analyzing simultaneous magnetic field and position data. The instrument consists of a unit containing a fluxgate magnetometer, position sensor and signal-conditioning circuits, connected to a unit containing a microprocessor, displays and associated electronics. An operator scans the sensor unit over the measurement surface, and the microprocessor estimates location, rod length and diameter. Experiments to estimate the parameters of horizontal typical reinforcing rods under a horizontal plane showed that the axis position could be estimated with an error of less than 0.5 cm, the length with a precision of <5 cm (<3.5%) and the depth with a precision of <0.4 cm at depths of 8 to 18 cm. Estimation of rod diameter was unreliable due to the presence of substantial remanent magnetization     

The granulomatous response in murine Schistosomiasis mansoni does not switch to Th1 in IL-4-deficient C57BL/6 mice

IL-4 plays an important role in polarizing inflammation toward a Th2 response. It remains uncertain, however, whether IL-4 also serves to prevent expression of Th1 inflammation. Therefore, using a genetically pure C57BL/6 IL-4-deficient mouse, we studied the role of IL-4 in regulating the production of IFN-gamma and Th1 inflammation in the granulomas of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni. In contrast to normal animals, IL-4 mutant mice generated smaller liver granulomas that contained fewer eosinophils and no mast cells. Collagenase-dispersed granuloma cells were analyzed by flow cytometry and cultured in vitro to measure cytokine and Ig production. Compared with control granuloma cells, IL-4-/- cells secreted only small quantities of IL-5 and IL-10. Also, there was impaired expression of the IL-4-dependent molecules IgE and IgG1 as well as B cell surface class II and CD23. Yet the granulomas of IL-4 -/- animals produced little IFN-gamma, IgG2a, or other molecules associated with Th1 inflammation even after Ag or anti-CD3 stimulation. Splenocytes from IL-4 -/- animals stimulated with schistosome Ag also failed to produce a Th1 response. Our data show that most aspects of the Th2 response in murine schistosomiasis are highly dependent on IL-4 production. But in the absence of IL-4, neither the natural local granulomatous response to schistosome ova nor the systemic response to soluble egg Ag switches to the type 1 phenotype. Thus the production of IL-4 early in the inflammatory response is not the only factor preventing Th1 expression in inflammation.
