Public awareness of the need to reduce global warming and the significant increase in the prices of conventional energy sources have encouraged many countries to provide new energy policies that promote the renewable energy applications. Such renewable energy sources like wind, solar, hydro based energies, etc. are environment friendly and have potential to be more widely used. Combining these renewable energy sources with back-up units to form a hybrid system can provide a more economic, environment friendly and reliable supply of electricity in all load demand conditions compared to single-use of such systems. One of the most important issues in this type of hybrid system is to optimally size the hybrid system components as sufficient enough to meet all load requirements with possible minimum investment and operating costs. There are many studies about the optimization and sizing of hybrid renewable energy systems since the recent popular utilization of renewable energy sources. In this concept, this paper provides a detailed analysis of such optimum sizing approaches in the literature that can make significant contributions to wider renewable energy penetration by enhancing the system applicability in terms of economy.  相似文献

A miniature printed antenna exploiting magnetic photonic crystal (MPC) modes is presented. The MPC mode is typically found in volumetric anisotropic materials and is realized here using a set of coupled printed transmission lines. The printed element is formed by a pair of unit cells, cascaded to realize a circularly periodic structure. To excite the nonreciprocal MPC mode, the coupled microstrip lines are printed on a uniform substrate with magnetic material inserts. A printed and slot (cavity-backed) version of the MPC-based element is designed and constructed. It is found that the cavity-backed version is better suited for reducing platform interactions, thus, avoiding detuning when installed on smaller platforms. Tunable magnetic biasing is also explored to improve functionality. The paper concludes by providing the in situ performance of the cavity-backed and recessed MPC antennas.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was determination of sulphonamide residues (sulphanilamide, sulphadiazine, sulphathiazole, sulphamerazine, sulphamethazine, sulphamethoxazole, and sulphadimethoxine) in cattle meat by the Charm II technique and the validation of sulphonamide levels by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD). Of 157 meat samples, 9 samples (5.73%) were found positive by the Charm II method. To make quantitative confirmation of sulphonamide content of positive samples, HPLC-FLD was used and four samples were confirmed as positive. In HPLC analysis, the limit of detection (LOD) was in the range 8–15 μg/kg and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 13–25 μg/kg. Average recoveries of sulphonamides ranged from 44.6% to 81% with relative standard deviations below 6% (n = 6). In conclusion, we consider that the results obtained in field screening by only using the Charm II system, as is common practice in Turkey and worldwide, are inadequate and thus the results should be confirmed by sensitive systems like HPLC.  相似文献

In this study, two full‐scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors, namely TUASB and CUASB, at the wastewater treatment plants of the Tekirdaǧ Alcohol (Raki) and Canakkale Alcohol (Cognac) distilleries were investigated in terms of performance, acetoclastic methanogenic capacity and microbial composition. The results were compared with a previously studied other UASB reactor (IUASB) at the wastewater treatment plant of the Istanbul Alcohol (Raki) Distillery from which the two reactors (TUASB and CUASB) were seeded. The IUASB reactor performed well achieving COD removal efficiencies of no lower than 85% at organic logding rates (OLRs) in the range of 6–11 kg COD m−3 day−1 between 1996 and 2001. During the last one year of operation, between 2000 and 2001, performance of the CUASB reactor in terms of COD removal efficiency was 70–80% at OLRs in a range of 1–4.5 kg COD m−3 day−1 whereas it was 60–80% at OLRs in a range of 2.5–8.5 kg COD m−3 day−1 in the TUASB reactor. At the end of year 2000, specific methanogenic activity (SMA) tests were carried out to determine potential loading capacity and optimum operating conditions of the IUASB, CUASB and TUASB reactors. The potential methane production (PMP) rates of the CUASB, IUASB and TUASB reactors were measured as 230 cm3 CH4 gVSS−1 day−1, 350 cm3 CH4 gVSS−1 day−1 and 376 cm3 CH4 gVSS−1 day−1 respectively. When the PMP rates were compared with actual methane production (AMP) rates obtained from the three UASB reactors, AMP/PMP ratios were evaluated to be 0.18, 0.12 and 0.13 for CUASB, TUASB and IUASB reactors respectively. This showed that the CUASB, TUASB and IUASB reactors were using only 18%, 12% and 13% of their potential acetoclastic methanogenic capacity respectively. These results can be interpreted that the three UASB reactors were underloaded compared with their potential acetoclastic methanogenic capacities. It was, therefore, recommended that the three UASB reactors should be loaded at higher organic loading rates or sludge withdrawn in order to maintain an AMP/PMP ratio of 0.6–0.7, which can ensure desired reactor performance with safer operation. Results of epifluoresence microscopic examinations showed that the percentage of total autofluorescent methanogens was approximately 30% of the total population in sludges from the TUASB and IUASB reactors whereas it was 20% in sludge from the CUASB reactor. The two UASB reactors treating raki distillery wastewaters contained sludges having a higher percentage of autofluorescent methanogenic population and higher acetoclastic methanogenic activity. BACKGROUND: Preformed anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies delay heart transplantation in patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) because of difficulty in finding crossmatch-negative donors. These antibodies may also be associated with adverse outcome after transplantation. METHODS: In a retrospective analysis of 40 patients with LVAD at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center between 1990 to 1996, age, sex, diagnosis, race, duration of support, transfusions, and infections were studied by univariate and multivariate analysis as predictors for development of either anti-HLA class I (anti-I) or anti-HLA class II (anti-II) immunoglobulin G (IgG) or M (IgM) antibodies. RESULTS: Eighteen (45%) patients had development of anti-I and 20 (50%) had development of anti-II antibodies over the study period. Median time for LVAD support was 142 days (range 35 to 439). Only total number of perioperative platelet transfusions predicted the development of anti-I IgG antibodies (p = .04). No other associations were found for development of anti-I IgM or anti-II antibodies of either IgG or IgM specificity. Patients who had development of anti-I IgG received a mean of 13.9 (SE +/- 2.6) units of platelets compared with a mean of 7.7 (SE +/- 2.3) units in those who did not (p = .01). By Kaplan-Meier analysis, at the median duration of follow-up, 8% of patients receiving < 6 units were predicted to have development of anti-I antibodies compared with 63% receiving > 6 units (p = .002). In the last 7 patients, leukocyte filters were used to decrease the antigenic load during platelet and red blood cell transfusions. Only 1 of 7 (14%) patients had development of anti-HLA antibodies compared with 31 of 33 (94%) in whom filters were not used (p < .005). CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that platelet transfusion during LVAD implantation is a risk factor associated with development of HLA class I IgG antibodies. Use of leukocyte filters during platelet transfusion may decrease the risk of development of anti-HLA antibodies.  相似文献

Rosai-Dorfman disease, or sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML), is a benign, self-limited pseudolymphomatous entity with characteristic histologic features. The disease may be atypically present in the absence of detectable nodal involvement. A great number of patients suffer and die of the sequelae of acute and chronic heart failure each year. Although advances in medical and surgical therapy have benefited many of these patients, most have disease that is refractory to any definitive therapy. For these patients cardiac transplantation is the only remaining hope. Unfortunately, because of the increasing demand for donor organs in the face of a fixed and limited supply, this option is available to only a small percentage of these patients. Even in patients accepted for transplantation, a significant waiting list mortality has been observed. A variety of VADs have been developed since the first successful case of mechanical cardiac assistance more than 30 years ago. These devices differ in basic mechanical function, method of insertion, and degree of implantability and thus have different indications and potential applications. Whereas the intraaortic balloon pump and centrifugal pumps are effective short-term support modalities, extracorporeal and implantable pulsatile devices have been used successfully for long-term support of patients with reversible and nonreversible cardiac failure. Although these pumps have most commonly been used as bridges to transplantation, increasing clinical experience has supported the notion of long-term mechanical assistance as a definitive therapy for patients with end-stage heart disease. Although complications, particularly infection and thromboembolism, pose significant challenges and long-term device reliability remains to be fully determined, available implantable devices appear to be capable of providing effective long-term support. As data are obtained from currently ongoing trials comparing VAD support with medical therapy for end-stage heart failure, ethical and economic issues will assume increasing importance.  相似文献

Encapsulation of therapeutic peptides and proteins into polymeric micro and nanoparticulates has been proposed as a strategy to overcome limitations to oral protein administration. Particles having diameter less than 5 μm are able to be taken up by the M cells of Peyer's patches found in intestinal mucosa. Current formulation methodologies involve organic solvents and several time consuming steps. In this study, spray drying was investigated to produce protein loaded micro/nanoparticles, as it offers the potential for single step operation, producing dry active-loaded particles within the micro to nano-range. Spherical, smooth surfaced particles were produced from alginate/protein feed solutions. The effect of operational parameters on particle properties such as recovery, residual activity and particle size was studied using subtilisin as model protein. Particle recovery depended on the inlet temperature of the drying air, and mean particle size ranged from 2.2 to 4.5 μm, affected by the feed rate and the alginate concentration in the feed solution. Increase in alginate:protein ratio increased protein stability. Presence of 0.2?g trehalose/g particle increased the residual activity up to 90%. Glycol-chitosan-Ca(2+)alginate particles were produced in a single step operation, with resulting mean diameter of 3.5 μm. Particles showed fluorescein isothiocyanate labeled bovine serum albumin (BSA)-protein entrapment with increasing concentration toward the particle surface. Similar, limited release profiles of BSA, subtilisin and lysozyme were observed in gastric simulation, with ultimate full release of the proteins in gastrointestinal simulation.  相似文献
