The escalation in product recalls in recent years is attributed to the rise of globalisation and associated challenges of offshoring. Extant SCM research suggests that product recalls have a significant negative impact on financial performance, but gaps exist relative to the managerial actions to minimise their impact. Recall response strategies have become more important in the press, given that a single recall may result in the mandatory withdrawal of millions of products from the market, with firms incurring enormous logistics costs and brand damage. In this study, we address this gap in the research, and using a measure of product recall defined as the volume of products withdrawn from the market due to product quality failure. We explore the scale of the recall in the context of pharmaceutical sector global sourcing strategies, exploring whether the variation in global sourcing decisions not only increases the likelihood of a recall, but also influences the capability to minimise the total cost of recall. Our results suggest that offshore outsourcing and captive offshoring have opposite effects in terms of their influence on the magnitude of product recall. We summarise the implications through a compelling set of insights for future global sourcing strategy research themes.  相似文献

A previously established human monocyte culture protocol was used to determine the effects of varying adsorbed proteins on monocyte/macrophage adhesion and survival on dimethyl-silane (DM) or RGD modified glass coverslips. Cells were allowed to adhere for 2 h in the absence of protein or in the presence of serum, fibrinogen (Fg), heat inactivated serum (HIS), serum supplemented with Fg or HIS with Fg. Cell adhesion and apoptosis rates were determined on days 0 (2 h), 3, 7 and 10 of culture. The presence of serum alone in the initial culture was sufficient to optimize monocyte/macrophage adhesion and survival rates. Adding Fg to serum did not increase adhesion nor decrease apoptotic rates. No protein or the addition of HIS during the initial incubation period significantly decreased monocyte/macrophage adhesion and survival on both surfaces, however, the addition of Fg to HIS restored adhesion and survival rates to those seen with in the presence of serum alone on RGD surfaces. These studies demonstrate that monocyte/macrophage adhesion and survival on biomaterial surfaces are optimized by adsorbed heat labile serum proteins while adsorbed Fg plays a surface property-dependent role.  相似文献

A nitrogen oxide (NO(x); x = 1, 2) optical sensor with an extremely low detection limit in the range of fractions of ppbV (0.3 ppbV for 20 s sample injection) is presented. This paper identifies and discusses the problems associatedwith contracting out labor-intensive government services. Itexamines in detail the contracting out of the orderly serviceat Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) in Western Australiaand its subsequent return to in-house delivery. When the orderlyservice was contracted out, the result was poor in terms ofcost, quality and externalities. Subsequent return of the serviceto in-house provision reduced costs and improved quality. Theproblems that led to failure of contracting out and subsequentsuccess of in-house provision can be explained in terms of transactioncost economics.  相似文献

Here we report some recent biophysical issues on the preparation of solute-filled lipid vesicles and their relevance to the construction of “synthetic cells.” First, we introduce the “semi-synthetic minimal cells” as the liposome-based cell-like systems, which contain a minimal number of biomolecules required to display simple and complex biological functions. Next, we focus on recent aspects related to the construction of synthetic cells. Emphasis is given to the interplay between the methods of synthetic cell preparation and the physics of solute encapsulation. We briefly introduce the notion of structural and compositional “diversity” in synthetic cell populations.  相似文献

Accurate prediction of long‐term ‘characteristic’ loads associated with an ultimate limit state for design of a 5‐MW bottom‐supported offshore wind turbine is the focus of this study. Specifically, we focus on predicting the long‐term fore–aft tower bending moment at the mudline and the out‐of‐plane bending moment at the blade root of a monopile‐supported shallow‐water offshore wind turbine. We employ alternative probabilistic predictions of long‐term loads using inverse reliability procedures in establishing the characteristic loads for design. Because load variability depends on the environmental conditions (defining the wind speed and wave height), we show that long‐term predictions that explicitly account for such load variability are more accurate, especially for environmental states associated with above‐rated wind speeds and associated wave heights. Macroporous structures are of interest for several technological applications such as catalysis, sensors, filters, membranes, batteries, energy conversion devices, structural colors, and reflective thermal barrier coatings. Ceramic-based inverse opal macroporous structures are especially interesting for high-temperature applications. However, the interrelation between the structural parameters, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of such structures is not yet clarified. In this work, we analyzed the mechanical properties as well as the thermal stability of aluminum oxide inverse opal three-dimensional macroporous structures with different macropore sizes and shell thicknesses produced by atomic layer deposition. Our results show that the structures’ thermal stability increased with increasing shell thickness and macropore size, however, their higher stability was not linked to their mechanical properties. To be able to explain this unexpected behavior, finite element modeling simulations were performed, showing that bending stresses became more pronounced with increasing shell thickness, potentially creating additional critical sites for crack initiation and consequent structural failure.  相似文献

The influence of high-pressure homogenisation (HPH) at 100 MPa on Lacticaseibacillus paracasei 90 (L90) was studied in vitro and in situ (fermented milk and cheese). Lysis and injury signs were observed in cells treated with HPH, which were linked to the release of intracellular enzymes and changes in the metabolic activity of L90. HPH treatment led to a higher lactic acid content and lower pH and pyruvic acid levels in fermented milk. The microbiological and peptide profiles of cheeses were modified by using cells or cell-free extracts of L90. Finally, this study suggests that L90 could release bioactive peptides.  相似文献
