Noise due to donors in n-channel silicon JFETs

We have measured the noise due to donors in n-channel silicon JFETs at temperatures near liquid nitrogen temperature. The noise showed an activation energy of about 1.3E₀, where E₀ is the activation energy of the donor centers. This is compatible with theory.     

Transition selection with adjustable outcoupling for a laser device applied to CO2

In this paper we discuss the possibilities and realization in high-power systems of a narrow-band reflector with adjustable high reflectivity and with continuous tuning over a large frequency region. We describe a design for both low- and high-gain systems. For the experimental realization of a low-gain system we used a CO2laser and studied a continuous range of 65 transitions of the00deg1-02deg0and 13 transitions of the 01¹1-11¹0 vibrational band. With a cavity containing a dc discharge 130 cm long, for each band we found a continuous range of single oscillating transitions with output powers up to 15 W. Finally, we propose an experimental solution for continuous tuning of a high-gain system as, for instance, the central part of the00deg1-10deg0vibrational band of CO2.     

Formation in vitro of ascorbic acid 2-sulfate

The sulfation of ascorbic acid by an ascorbic acid sulphotransferase was investigated using rat liver and colon homogenates. When Na2 35 SO4 or 3'-phosphoadenylyl [35S]sulfate (P-Ado-P-35S) and ascorbic acid were used as substrates, chromatographic behavior of the reaction products on thin-layer cellulose suggested that ascorbic acid 2-[35S]sulfate was formed. With Na2 35SO4 as the source of radioactive sulfate in the assay system, ATP was found to be an obligatory cofactor. Incorporation of [35S]sulfate frofrom Na2 35SO4 into ascorbic acid 2-[35S]sulfate was also decreased when ATP sulfurylase inhibitors were added to the system. P-Ado-O35S alone in the assay without ATP was an extemely effective sulfating agent. In addition, liver and colon homogenates from vitamin A deficient and sufficient rats were used in one of the studies. Vitamin A deficiency appeared to have little effect on ascorbic acid 2-sulfate formation.     

Determiners and consequences of verbal behaviors of young children and their mothers.

Explored the dynamic aspects of maternal language instruction and first language learning. 10 boys and 10 girls between 1 and 5 yrs of age were observed with their mothers in their middle-class homes. 11 types of motivating techniques and 5 types of instructional activities could be reliably differentiated. The frequencies of motivating techniques remained unchanged with the child's increasing age and language level, whereas the frequencies of the mother's instructional activities declined significantly. Meaningful intercorrelations of the motivating techniques attested to the mutual adaptation of mothers and children. Significant intercorrelations of the types of contents taught suggested maternal teaching styles. Motivating techniques and contents of instructions were only weakly related, indicating that instructional strategies can be combined rather flexibly. Applications of Programmed Experimental Teaching Exercises

Programmed Experimental Teaching Exercises have been used for laboratory instrument familiarization and for demonstration of basic circuit phenomena in conjunction with a first course in circuit theory for electrical engineering students. The exercises were used as part of the normal classroom presentation and covered such subjects as signal waveforms, time constants, superposition, impedance, resonance, power, Bode plots, and dependent sources. The students confirmed that the exercises materially strengthened the course and were of definite help in understanding basic concepts. The exercise on the use of the dual-trace oscilloscope, as an example of the utilization of these exercises for instrument familiarization, provided sufficient theory and training to enable the students to confidently use the oscilloscope as a measuring instrument.
