Palmitoleic acid inRoureopsis obliquifoliata (Connaraceae) Seed oil

Roureopsis obliquifoliata Schellenberg seeds contain an oil (45% by weight) comprised primarily of 16-carbon fatty acids. Palmitic acid constitutes 50% of the fatty acids, palmitoleic acid 32%, and small amounts of the usual C₁₈ acids make up the remainder. Identifications were based on Chromatographic properties of the acids and their ozonolysis products.     

Detection of spermaceti in a hand cream

The presence of spermaceti, an embargoed item, was confirmed in a sample of hand cream detained by federal agents. The identification was based on chromatographic characteristics of the intact wax esters and of their component fatty acids and alcohols. These acids and alcohols were combined in a manner so closely resembling spermaceti that they undoubtedly came from this source.     

Linoleic acid hydroperoxide concentration in relation to mutagenicity of repeatedly used deep-frying fats

A high-performance liquid chromatography procedure was developed to measure linoleic acid hydroperoxides (LAHPO) in 19 used, deep-frying fat samples that were screened for mutagenicity. The detection limit of the method was found to be 10 nmol of LAHPO/g of fat. In eight samples, LAHPO were not detected; levels in the other samples ranged from 17 to 267 nmol/g of fat. LAHPO were not detectable in unusued hydrogenated frying fat samples. Concentrations of LAHPO correlated positively with mutagenicity to Salmonella tester strains TA97 and TA100, in presence of S9 mix only; coefficients of correlation were, respectively, r=0.48 (p<0.05) and r=0.24 (n.s.). Without metabolic activation no significant associations were observed. These results suggest that metabolites or secondary autoxidation products of linoleic acid generated in presence of liver S9 mix may contribute to mutagenicity of some of the used deep-frying fat samples.     

Studies on Apocynacea Seed Oils

The fatty acid composition of three seed oils of Apocynaceae has been studied in this investigation. The seed oils of Apocynaceae were examined for their component acids and were found to contain the following acids: Rauwolfia serpentina, Benth, (wt.%) lauric 0.2 %, myristic 0.8 %, palmitic 17.7%, stearic 4.9 %, arachidic 0.9 %, behenic 0.6 %, oleic 34.4 %, and linoleic 40.5 %. Rauwolfia tetraphylla, Linn. syn. Rauwolfia canescens, Linn., Rauwolfia heterophylla, Roem and Schult, (wt.%) lauric 0.9 %, myristic 3.4 %, palmitic 25.7 %, stearic 10.3%, arachidic 1.6%, behenic 1.4%, oleic 36.5 %, and linoleic 20.2 %. Vinca rosea Linn syn. Lochnera rosea, Linn. (wt.%) lauric 0.2%, myristic 1.0%, palmitic 1.4 %, stearic 6.8 %, arachidic 1.3 %, behenic 0.6 %, oleic 73.6 %, and linoleic 15.1 %.
