In this work, α-Ag2−2xCuxWO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.16) solid solutions with enhanced antibacterial (against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and antifungal (against Candida albicans) activities are reported. A plethora of techniques (X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinements, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, micro-Raman spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence emissions, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) were employed to characterize the as-synthetized samples and determine the local coordination geometry of Cu2+ cations at the orthorhombic lattice. To find a correlation between morphology and biocide activity, the experimental results were sustained by first-principles calculations at the density functional theory level to decipher the cluster coordinations and electronic properties of the exposed surfaces. Based on the analysis of the under-coordinated Ag and Cu clusters at the (010) and (101) exposed surfaces, we propose a mechanism to explain the biocide activity of these solid solutions. 相似文献

The ability to obtain Fe is critical for pathogens to multiply in their host. For this reason, there is significant interest in the identification of compounds that might interfere with Fe management in bacteria. Here we have tested the response of two Gram-negative pathogens, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (STM) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PAO1), to deferiprone (DFP), a chelating agent already in use for the treatment of thalassemia, and to some DFP derivatives designed to increase its lipophilicity. Our results indicate that DFP effectively inhibits the growth of PAO1, but not STM. Similarly, Fe-dependent genes of the two microorganisms respond differently to this agent. DFP is, however, capable of inhibiting an STM strain unable to synthesize enterochelin, while its effect on PAO1 is not related to the capability to produce siderophores. Using a fluorescent derivative of DFP we have shown that this chelator can penetrate very quickly into PAO1, but not into STM, suggesting that a selective receptor exists in Pseudomonas. Some of the tested derivatives have shown a greater ability to interfere with Fe homeostasis in STM compared to DFP, whereas most, although not all, were less active than DFP against PAO1, possibly due to interference of the added chemical tails with the receptor-mediated recognition process. The results reported in this work indicate that DFP can have different effects on distinct microorganisms, but that it is possible to obtain derivatives with a broader antimicrobial action. 相似文献

Ocular fibrosis leads to severe visual impairment and blindness worldwide, being a major area of unmet need in ophthalmology and medicine. To date, the only available treatments are antimetabolite drugs that have significant potentially blinding side effects, such as tissue damage and infection. There is thus an urgent need to identify novel targets to prevent/treat scarring and postsurgical fibrosis in the eye. In this review, the latest progress in biological mechanisms underlying ocular fibrosis are discussed. We also summarize the current knowledge on preclinical studies based on viral and non-viral gene therapy, as well as chemical inhibitors, for targeting TGFβ or downstream effectors in fibrotic disorders of the eye. Moreover, the role of angiogenetic and biomechanical factors in ocular fibrosis is discussed, focusing on related preclinical treatment approaches. Moreover, we describe available evidence on clinical studies investigating the use of therapies targeting TGFβ-dependent pathways, angiogenetic factors, and biomechanical factors, alone or in combination with other strategies, in ocular tissue fibrosis. Finally, the recent progress in cell-based therapies for treating fibrotic eye disorders is discussed. The increasing knowledge of these disorders in the eye and the promising results from testing of novel targeted therapies could offer viable perspectives for translation into clinical use. 相似文献

Strain Distribution within Geosynthetic-Reinforced Slopes 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Geosynthetic-reinforced slopes are conventionally designed using methods based on limit equilibrium. In order to estimate the factor of safety against internal stability using these methods, the distribution of the reinforcement peak tensile forces with height must be assumed. A linear distribution of reinforcement peak tension with height, with zero tension at the crest and maximum peak tension at the toe of the structure, has often been assumed. Although this assumption may be appropriate for the design of vertical geosynthetic-reinforced walls, little evidence has been collected so far justifying this distribution for the design of geosynthetic-reinforced slopes. A combination of centrifuge testing and digital image analysis is undertaken in order to obtain the strain distribution within geosynthetic-reinforced slopes under prefailure conditions. Specifically, digital image analysis techniques are used to determine the displacement distribution along reinforcement layers in reduced-scale models subjected to increasing g levels. A sigmoid function was useful to fit raw displacement data and estimate the strain distribution along reinforcement layers. Analysis of reinforcement strain results shows that the location of the reinforcement maximum peak strain does not occur near the toe of the structure, but was located approximately at midheight of the reinforced slopes, at the point along the critical failure surface directly below the crest of the slope. The pattern of reinforcement peak strain with height obtained for prefailure conditions is similar to that obtained for failure conditions. The estimated factor of safety is found to be a good indicator of the magnitude of the reinforcement maximum peak strain for geosynthetic-reinforced slopes built with different configurations. 相似文献

Since the nutritional value of farm‐raised fish fillets is directly related to the diet provided, we supplemented the diet of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with a blend of chia (Salvia hispanica L.) oil, tung (Aleurites fordii) oil, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) to evaluate the effects on the fatty acid composition. Vitamin E was also added to the diet to improve the antioxidant capacity of tilapia fillets. We observed an increase in α‐linolenic acid content (from 6.56 to 19.03 mg g?1 of total lipids), as well as the incorporation of CLA and conjugated linolenic acid (CLnA) isomers in the fillets. The addition of vitamin E resulted in the antioxidant capacity improvement of the fillets and higher values were found after 15 feeding days (39.25 µmol TE g?1 in the Ferric Reducing Ability Power assay). Supplementation proved to be an excellent tool to improve the nutritional value of fish fillets. 相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate the fracture load and push-out bond strength of flared root canals restored with different procedures, including a technique with a fiber post and a chemically activated resin composite. Eighty human canines were selected and treated endodontically. Two methodologies were used: push-out and fracture load. The teeth were divided into four groups: Cast metal core (CMC); PAN (direct anatomic post); PAC (fiber post and accessory posts); and PE (fiber post with chemically activated resin composite). For the fracture load test, the samples were submitted to load application in a universal testing machine. The fracture mode was evaluated visually. Forty other samples were submitted to the push-out test. The fracture load (n = 10) and the bond strength (n = 10) were analyzed by analysis of variance and Tukey tests (α < 0.05). CMC presented the highest fracture load (p < 0.05), and no significant differences were observed in the fracture load values for Groups PAN, PAC, and PE. CMC presented 90% of unfavorable failures; PAN and PAC, the remaining 10% of these failures. PE presented only favorable failures. PAC presented lower push-out bond strength values. The fracture load for CMC procedure was higher than that of the others, but presented 90% unfavorable fractures, indicating the use of any of the glass fiber post techniques evaluated for restoring flared root canals due to favorable fracture modes. 相似文献

Thin films of heavily B-doped nanocrystalline diamond (B:NCD) have been investigated by a combination of high resolution annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy and spatially resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy performed on a state-of-the-art aberration corrected instrument to determine the B concentration, distribution and the local B environment. Concentrations of ~1 to 3 at.% of boron are found to be embedded within individual grains. Even though most NCD grains are surrounded by a thin amorphous shell, elemental mapping of the B and C signal shows no preferential embedding of B in these amorphous shells or in grain boundaries between the NCD grains, in contrast with earlier work on more macroscopic superconducting polycrystalline B-doped diamond films. Detailed inspection of the fine structure of the boron K-edge and comparison with density functional theory calculated fine structure energy-loss near-edge structure signatures confirms that the B atoms present in the diamond grains are substitutional atoms embedded tetrahedrally into the diamond lattice. 相似文献

Poly(propylene‐co‐ethylene) composites with rice husk were prepared in a corotating intermeshing twin‐screw extruder using four different coupling agents. While modified maleic anhydrides such as maleated polypropylene (MAPP) and maleated polyethylene (MAPE) are commonly used as compatibilizers to improve interfacial adhesion between lignocellulosic filler and matrix, in this study, polypropylene grafted with acid comonomer (CAPP) and high‐density polyethylene grafted with acid comonomer (CAPE) were also used. The morphologies and the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning analysis, tensile and impact tests. The results indicate that the base resin of the compatibilizer is an important factor in determining the effectiveness of compatibilizers for composites. Composites with PP‐based compatibilizers are more effective than PE‐based compatibilizers due to the improved wetting of the former compatibilizer in the matrix polymer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. European emissions of nine representative halocarbons (CFC-11, CFC-12, Halon 1211, HCFC-141b, HCFC-142b, HCFC-22, HFC-125, HFC-134a, HFC-152a) are derived for the year 2009 by combining long-term observations in Switzerland, Italy, and Ireland with campaign measurements from Hungary. For the first time, halocarbon emissions over Eastern Europe are assessed by top-down methods, and these results are compared to Western European emissions. The employed inversion method builds on least-squares optimization linking atmospheric observations with calculations from the Lagrangian particle dispersion model FLEXPART. The aggregated halocarbon emissions over the study area are estimated at 125 (106-150) Tg of CO(2) equiv/y, of which the hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) make up the most important fraction with 41% (31-52%). We find that chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) emissions from banks are still significant and account for 35% (27-43%) of total halocarbon emissions in Europe. The regional differences in per capita emissions are only small for the HFCs, while emissions of CFCs and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) tend to be higher in Western Europe compared to Eastern Europe. In total, the inferred per capita emissions are similar to estimates for China, but 3.5 (2.3-4.5) times lower than for the United States. Our study demonstrates the large benefits of adding a strategically well placed measurement site to the existing European observation network of halocarbons, as it extends the coverage of the inversion domain toward Eastern Europe and helps to better constrain the emissions over Central Europe. 相似文献
