Nonradiative energy transfer method was used to study latex film formation induced by organic solvent vapor. Seven different films with the same latex content were prepared separately from poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles and exposed to ethyl benzene, toluene, chloroform, dichloromethane, tetrahydrofuran, and acetone vapor in seven different experiments. Energy‐transfer experiments were carried out between PMMA‐bound naphthalene (N) and pyrene (P) during vapor‐induced film formation. Latex films were prepared from equal amounts of N‐ and P‐labeled latex particles, and steady state spectra of N and P were monitored during film formation. It was observed that the P to N intensity ratio, IP/IN, increased as the vapor exposure time increased. The Prager–Tirrell (PT) model was employed to obtain back‐and‐forth frequencies, ν, of the reptating PMMA chains during latex film formation induced by solvent vapor. ν values were obtained and found to be correlated with the solubility parameter, δ. Native kinesin consists of two light chains and two heavy chains in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. To date, only one gene for kinesin light chain has been characterized, while a second gene was identified in a genomic sequencing study but not analyzed biochemically. Here we describe new genes encoding kinesin light chains in mouse. One of these light chains is neuronally enriched, while another shows ubiquitous expression. The presence of multiple kinesin light chain genes in mice is especially interesting, since there are two kinesin heavy chain genes in humans (Niclas, J., Navone, F., Hom-Booher, N., and Vale, R. D. (1994) Neuron 12, 1059-1072). To assess the selectivity of kinesin light chain interaction with the heavy chains, we performed immunoprecipitation experiments. The data suggested that the light chains form homodimers with no specificity in their interaction with the two heavy chains. Immunofluorescence and biochemical subfractionation suggested differences in the subcellular localization of the two kinesin light chain gene products. Although both kinesin light chains are distributed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, there is enrichment of one in sciatic nerve axons, while the other shows elevated levels in olfactory bulb glomeruli. These results indicate that the mammalian nervous system contains multiple kinesin light chain gene products with potentially distinct functions.  相似文献

A new multi-layer self-organizing map (MLSOM) is proposed for unsupervised processing tree-structured data. The MLSOM is an improved self-organizing map for handling structured data. By introducing multiple SOM layers, the MLSOM can overcome the computational speed and visualization problems of SOM for structured data (SOM-SD). Node data in different levels of a tree are processed in different layers of the MLSOM. Root nodes are dedicatedly processed on the top SOM layer enabling the MLSOM a better utilization of SOM map compared with the SOM-SD. Thus, the MLSOM exhibits better data organization, clustering, visualization, and classification results of tree-structured data. Experimental results on three different data sets demonstrate that the proposed MLSOM approach can be more efficient and effective than the SOM-SD.  相似文献

In the recent past, arsenic contamination in groundwater has emerged as an epidemic in different Asian countries, such as Bangladesh, India, and China. Arsenic removal plants (ARP) are one possible option to provide arsenic-safe drinking water. This paper evaluates the efficiency of ARP projects in removing arsenic and iron from raw groundwater, on the basis of our 2-year-long study covering 18 ARPs from 11 manufacturers, both from home and abroad, installed in an arsenic affected area of West Bengal, India, known as the Technology Park Project (TP project). Immediately after installation of ARPs on August 29, 2001, the villagers began using filtered water for drinking and cooking, even though our first analysis on September 13, 2001 found that 10 of 13 ARPs failed to remove arsenic below the WHO provisional guideline value (10 microg/L), while six plants could not achieve the Indian Standard value (50 microg/L). The highest concentration of arsenic in filtered water was observed to be 364 microg/L. Our 2-year study showed that none of the ARPs could maintain arsenic in filtered water below the WHO provisional guideline value and only two could meet the Indian standard value (50 microg/L) throughout. Standard statistical techniques showed that ARPs from the same manufacturers were not equally efficient. Efficiency of the ARPs was evaluated on the basis of point and interval estimates of the proportion of failure. During the study period almost all the ARPs have undergone minor or major modifications to improve their performance, and after our study, 15 (78%) out of 18 ARPs were no longer in use. In this study, we also analyzed urine samples from villagers in the TP project area and found that 82% of the samples contained arsenic above the normal limit.  相似文献

Arsenic contaminated groundwater is used extensively in Bangladesh to irrigate the staple food of the region, paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.). To determine if this irrigation has led to a buildup of arsenic levels in paddy fields, and the consequences for arsenic exposure through rice ingestion, a survey of arsenic levels in paddy soils and rice grain was undertaken. Survey of paddy soils throughout Bangladesh showed that arsenic levels were elevated in zones where arsenic in groundwater used for irrigation was high, and where these tube-wells have been in operation for the longest period of time. Regression of soil arsenic levels with tube-well age was significant. Arsenic levels reached 46 microg g(-1) dry weight in the most affected zone, compared to levels below l0 microg g(-1) in areas with low levels of arsenic in the groundwater. Arsenic levels in rice grain from an area of Bangladesh with low levels of arsenic in groundwaters and in paddy soils showed that levels were typical of other regions of the world. Modeling determined, even these typical grain arsenic levels contributed considerably to arsenic ingestion when drinking water contained the elevated quantity of 0.1 mg L(-1). Arsenic levels in rice can be further elevated in rice growing on arsenic contaminated soils, potentially greatly increasing arsenic exposure of the Bangladesh population. Rice grain grown in the regions where arsenic is building up in the soil had high arsenic concentrations, with three rice grain samples having levels above 1.7 microg g(-1).  相似文献

New designs for the velocity matching of a deep-etched semiconductor electro-optic modulator are presented. A tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) coating is considered here for achieving velocity matching between the microwave and the optical signals. The effects of the velocity mismatch, the conductor loss, the dielectric loss, and the impedance mismatch are studied in relation to the optical bandwidth of a high-speed semiconductor modulator. It is shown that both the dielectric loss and the impedance matching play key roles for velocity-matched high-speed modulators with low conductor loss. The effects of Ta2O5 thickness on the overall bandwidth and on the half-wave voltage-length product VpiL are also reported.  相似文献

The functionalized conducting polymer (CP) of 5, 2':5', 2' '-terthiophene-3'-carboxylic acid on a platinum microelectrode was prepared through the electropolymerization process using cyclic voltammetry and was used as a substrate for the immobilization of enzymes. The nanoparticles of the CP were obtained at a high scan rate in the cyclic voltammetric experiment. A needle-type amperometric glutamate microbiosensor based on the covalent immobilization of glutamate oxidase (GlOx) onto the CP layer was fabricated for in vivo measurements. The surfaces of the CP/Pt and GlOx/CP/Pt were characterized by QCM, ESCA, and AFM. The biosensor efficiently detected glutamate through the oxidation of enzymatically generated H2O2 at approximately +0.45 V versus Ag/AgCl. Various experimental parameters, such as pH, temperature, and the applied potential in the detection step were optimized. The interference effects from other biological compounds were examined, and ascorbate and dopamine interferences were observed, which were completely minimized by coimmobilizing ascorbate oxidase and by coating the sensor surface with a cationic polymer, polyethyleneimine. A linear calibration plot for glutamate was obtained between 0.2 and 100 microM with a detection limit of 0.1 +/- 0.03 microM. The proposed glutamate microbiosensor was successfully used for in vivo monitoring of the extracellular glutamate released by cocaine stimulation.  相似文献

This study was aimed at developing a controlled-release coating system around core pellets with aqueous dispersion, along with some water channeling agents. Core pellets of diltiazem were prepared using the extrusion-spheronization technique and subsequently coated with aqueous dispersion of Eudragit NE40 alone, or drug-polymer mixtures using bottom-spray fluidized bed coater. The lag time in drug release profiles increased as the coating levels of Eudragit NE40 were increased, whereas no lag time was observed in core pellets coated with drug-polymer mixtures. Mixed coating at the 7% level exhibited comparatively better release profiles and provided desirable release rates during the 12-hour testing interval. Diltiazem HCl release from mixed coating was fairly independent of pH and drug loading. Curing of coated pellets was found to be an essential step for stable drug release profiles. The selection of core size range had remarkable effect on drug release rate and was considerably reduced by using greater core size.  相似文献

This study focuses on adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) techniques for the acquisition of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are very low level sounds produced by the outer hair cells of normal cochleas, spontaneously or in response to sound stimulation as a byproduct of a frequency and threshold sensitivity increasing mechanism. Current OAE recording systems rely on test probe noise attenuation and synchronous ensemble averaging for increasing signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The efficiency of an ANC algorithm for noise suppression was investigated using three microphones: one placed in the test ear, one in the nontest ear for internal noise reference; one near the subject's head for external noise reference. The system proposed was tested with simulations, off-line averaging and real-time implementation of the ANC algorithm. Simulation results showed that the technique had a potential noise reduction capability of 24 dB for complex multifrequency noise signals. Off-line results were positive, with a mean SNR improvement of 4.9 dB. Real-time results indicated that the use of an ANC algorithm in combination with standard averaging methods can reduce noise levels by as much as 10 dB beyond that obtained with standard noise reduction methods and probe attenuation alone.  相似文献
