A three-step numerical procedure for studying droplet deformation in mixed, dispersing-type, flow fields is described. Finite element and numerical particle tracking techniques are used to obtain the history of shear and elongation rates along a particle trajectory in the flow field, and from this history, boundary integral techniques are used to determine the deformation a drop would experience along this path. This approach is then used to investigate the effect of a small change in geometry on the breakup behavior of drops in the annular gap flow between two eccentric cylinders. This flow geometry serves as an idealization of a rotor-stator dispersing device used for highly viscous fluid systems. It is found that an increase in eccentricity produces an increase in dispersing capability. Experiments in an eccentric cylinder geometry were performed to verify the simulation procedure. Under the experimental conditions considered, it is found that the simulations perform well, correctly predicting whether or not drop breakup occurs and the qualitative drop evolution behavior. The simulation procedure outlined in this paper can serve as an effective tool to determine drop breakup in dispersing geometries and hence to optimize dispersing procedures.  相似文献

We analyzed mesopic rod and S-cone interactions in terms of their contributions to the blue-yellow opponent pathway. Stimuli were generated using a four-primary colorimeter. Mixed rod and S-cone modulation thresholds (constant L-, M-cone excitation) were measured as a function of their phase difference. Modulation amplitude was equated using threshold units and contrast ratios. This study identified three interaction types: (1) a linear and antagonistic rod:S-cone interaction, (2) probability summation, and (3) a previously unidentified mutual nonlinear reinforcement. Linear rod:S-cone interactions occur within the blue-yellow opponent pathway. Probability summation involves signaling by different postreceptoral pathways. The origin of the nonlinear reinforcement is possibly at the photoreceptors.  相似文献

Since the world economy has been confronted with an increasing risk of supply shortages of critical raw materials (CRMs), there has been a major interest in identifying alternative secondary sources of CRMs. Bauxite residues from alumina production are available at a multi‐million tonnes scale worldwide. So far, attempts have been made to find alternative re‐use applications for bauxite residues, for instance in cement / pig iron production. However, bauxite residues also constitute an untapped secondary source of CRMs. Depending on their geological origin and processing protocol, bauxite residues can contain considerable amounts of valuable elements. The obvious primary consideration for CRM recovery from such residues is the economic value of the materials contained. However, there are further benefits from re‐use of bauxite residues in general, and from CRM recovery in particular. These go beyond monetary values (e.g. reduced investment / operational costs resulting from savings in disposal). For instance, benefits for the environment and health can be achieved by abatement of tailing storage as well as by reduction of emissions from conventional primary mining. Whereas certain tools (e.g. life‐cycle analysis) can be used to quantify the latter, other benefits (in particular sustained social and technological development) are harder to quantify. This review evaluates strategies of bauxite residue re‐use / recycling and identifies associated benefits beyond elemental recovery. Furthermore, methodologies to translate risks and benefits into quantifiable data are discussed. Ultimately, such quantitative data are a prerequisite for facilitating decision‐making regarding bauxite residue re‐use / recycling and a stepping stone towards developing a zero‐waste alumina production process. © 2018 The Authors. Scattering resulting from interface imperfections critically affects the image contrast and optical throughput of multilayer coatings for 13.5 nm. To investigate the scattering mechanisms, at-wavelength scattering measurements in combination with atomic force microscopy are analyzed for an in-depth characterization of the roughness properties. The different impacts of substrate finish and intrinsic thin film roughness on the scattering distribution are separated and analyzed in detail. Furthermore, a novel approach to characterize the roughness of large extreme ultraviolet substrates is presented, based on light scattering measurements at 442 nm.  相似文献
