The compressive strength of normal strength concrete at elevated temperatures up to 700°C and the effect of cooling regimes were investigated and compared in this study. Thus, two different mixture groups with initial strengths of 20 and 35 MPa were produced by using river sand, normal aggregate and portland cement. Thirteen different temperature values were chosen from 50 to 700°C. The specimens were heated for 3 h at each temperature. After heating, concretes were cooled to room temperature either in water rapidly or in laboratory conditions gradually. The residual strengths were determined by an axial compressive strength test. Strength and unit weight losses were compared with the initial values. Throughout this study, ASTM and Turkish Standards were used. It was observed that concrete properties deteriorated with the heat; however, a small increase in strength was observed from 50 to 100°C. Strength loss was more significant on the specimens rapidly cooled in water. Both concrete mixtures lost a significant part of their initial strength when the temperature reached 700°C. Some astronomers are considering the moon as an attractive location within the inner solar system for a variety of astronomical observatories, some of which could be operational early in the 21st century. This paper describes the computer‐aided structural design of a 122‐m diameter, fully steerable, parabolic radio telescope to be located on the moon. The loads acting on such a reflector differ substantially from those acting on a reflector that must operate in earth's environment. The moon has excellent advantages as a location for such an instrument. The absence of atmosphere completely eliminates the wind, snow, and ice loads. The gravity field is only one‐sixth that of earth's. The thermal changes from night to day are severe, but structural problems can be avoided by using a thermally stable composite material. Structural elements for the reflector dish have been analyzed and designed for static loads with a specially written interactive graphical computer program. The resulting structure has a mass nearly 40 times less than its earth's counterpart made of steel. The evaluation of the results of the design studies supports the possibility of building a large‐aperture parabolic radio telescope on the moon.  相似文献

Cloud services delivered by high-capacity optical datacenter networks are subject to disasters which may cause large-area failures, leading to huge data loss. Survivable service provisioning is crucial to minimize the effects of network/datacenter failures and maintain critical services in case of a disaster. We propose a novel disaster-aware service-provisioning scheme that multiplexes service over multiple paths destined to multiple servers/datacenters with manycasting. Our scheme maintains some bandwidth (i.e., degraded service) after a disaster failure vs. no service at all. We formulate this problem into a mathematical model which turns out to be an Integer Linear Program (ILP), and we provide heuristic optimization approaches as ILP is intractable for large problem instances. Numerical examples show that exploiting manycasting by intelligently selecting destinations in a risk-aware manner for service provisioning offers high level of survivability against link and node failures that may be caused by disasters and post-disaster failures at no extra cost compared to the other survivable schemes.  相似文献

The effects of elevated temperatures and cooling regimes on the residual (after cooling) bond strength between concrete and steel bars are investigated. For this study, ribbed steel bars of 8 mm diameter are embedded in to C20 and C35 concrete blocks with embedment lengths of 6, 10 and 12 cm. Unsealed specimens are heated to 12 different temperatures ranging between 50 and 700 °C and then cooled in water or in air. Pull-out tests are carried out on the specimens, and the effects of elevated temperatures on the residual bond strength are investigated by comparing the results against unheated specimens.  相似文献

This paper reports a study on chemical reactivity of gneiss, diorite and limestone aggregates in aqueous solution. The originality of this study is that it extended to very short times (less than 1440 min). Rise in pH tests was implemented and dissolution kinetics was analysed. The results showed that calcium was the major element released by the aggregates. It has also been found that dissolution had an influence on the final morphology of aggregates. Polyamine emulsifier adsorption onto aggregates has been assessed using electrophoresis. Finally, the rise in pH and electrophoretic tests were compared to the breaking test traditionally performed to characterise bitumen emulsions. It was found that breaking values were controlled by both the surface area and the surface charge of the particles. Results may be correlated to polyamine adsorption on aggregates. Adsorption seemed to be efficient for gneiss and diorite: at pH 2, their charge turned from slightly negative to highly positive. At this pH value, limestone particles were dissolved and polyamine adsorption must be less efficient than with gneiss and diorite, for which the emulsion breaking was facilitated by the high attraction of particles for the emulsifier, due to their negative surface charge.  相似文献

Cloud-computing services are provided to consumers through a network of servers and network equipment. Cloud-network (CN) providers virtualize resources [e.g., virtual machine (VM) and virtual network (VN)] for efficient and secure resource allocation. Disasters are one of the worst threats for CNs as they can cause massive disruptions and CN disconnection. A disaster may also induce post-disaster correlated, cascading failures which can disconnect more CNs. Survivable virtual-network embedding (SVNE) approaches have been studied to protect VNs against single physical-link/-node and dual physical-link failures in communication infrastructure, but massive disruptions due to a disaster and their consequences can make SVNE approaches insufficient to guarantee cloud-computing survivability. In this work, we study the problem of survivable CN mapping from disaster. We consider risk assessment, VM backup location, and post-disaster survivability to reduce the risk of failure and probability of CN disconnection and the penalty paid by operators due to loss of capacity. We formulate the proposed approach as an integer linear program and study two scenarios: a natural disaster, e.g., earthquake and a human-made disaster, e.g., weapons-of-mass-destruction attack. Our illustrative examples show that our approach reduces the risk of CN disconnection and penalty up to 90 % compared with a baseline CN mapping approach and increases the CN survivability up to 100 % in both scenarios.  相似文献

This study aims to evaluate the tribological and corrosion properties of the electroless Ni-B coating deposited on AISI 304 stainless steels. The microstructure of the coating was characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS). XRD analysis revealed that the prepared coating possessed an amorphous character. SEM-EDS investigation also indicated that a non-stoichiometric Ni-B coating was deposited with a columnar growth mechanism on the stainless steel substrate and the morphology of the growth surface was blackberry-like. The hardness and tribological properties were characterized by microhardness and a pin-on-disc wear test. The electroless Ni-B coated sample had a higher degree of hardness, a lower friction coefficient and a lower wear rate than the uncoated substrate. The electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization method was used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the coating. The electroless Ni-B coating offered cathodic protection on the substrate by acting as a sacrificial anode although it was electrochemically more reactive than the stainless steel substrate.  相似文献

The main objective of this study is to determine the stress intensity factors associated with a circumferential crack in a thin-walled cylinder subjected to quasi-static thermal loading. The cylinder is assumed to be a functionally graded material. In order to make the problem analytically tractable, the thin-walled cylinder is modeled as a layer on an elastic foundation whose thermal and mechanical properties are exponential functions of the thickness coordinate. Hence a plane strain crack problem is obtained. First temperature and thermal stress distributions for a crack-free layer are determined. Then using these solutions, the crack problem is reduced to a local perturbation problem where the only nonzero loads are the crack surface tractions. Both internal and edge cracks are considered. Stress intensity factors are computed as functions of crack geometry, material properties, and time.  相似文献

Nowadays many studies have been focusing on the development of biomaterials obtained from renewable resources to replace fossil based plastics. The famous example is starch which is produced by a wide variety of plants as energy reserve and is available in abundance at a very competitive price. It can easily be transformed into thermoplastic starch (TPS) by addition of a plasticizer. However, TPS suffers from several limitations, such as poor mechanical properties and water sensitivity which did not permit its use in large practical applications. In this study, different formulations, containing commercial corn starch and plasticizers were prepared by the film casting method, after gelatinization of starch in hot aqueous suspensions. To obtain flexible films, two plasticizers were used: glycerol and dioctyl phthalate (DOP). The fact that the DOP displayed an exceptionally poor water affinity, three co-solvents, methanol, ethanol and acetone were added in the aim to improve its solubility. The obtained materials were tested considering the water resistance measured at 25 and at 50 ℃, mechanical properties in tension and the differential scanning thermal analysis (DSC). From the obtained results, it seems that the solvent system as well as the plasticizers used affects considerably the properties of the resulting materials.  相似文献

Dimensional stability, mechanical properties, and melting and crystallization behavior of polypropylene composites filled with sunflower seed cake (SSC) were investigated. Injection molded composites were prepared from the SSC flour and polypropylene with and without maleic anhydride‐grafted polypropylene (MAPP) at 30, 40, 50, and 60 wt % contents of the SSC flour. Twenty‐eight days thickness swelling and water absorption values of the specimens increased by 43 and 56% as the filler content increased from 30 to 60 wt %, respectively. The flexural modulus of the polypropylene composites increased from 3157 to 4363 MPa as the SSC flour increased from 30 to 60 wt %. The maximum flexural strength 38.4 MPa was observed for 40 wt % SSC flour filled specimens. However, further increment in the SCC flour decreased the flexural strength to 31.4 MPa. The tensile strength of the specimens decreased from 22.5 to 14 MPa while the tensile modulus increased from 3023 to 3677 MPa as the SSC flour increased from 30 to 60 wt %. The dimensional stability and mechanical properties of the composites were significantly improved by the incorporation of the coupling agent (MAPP). The effect of the MAPP addition was more pronounced for the strength than for the modulus. The melting temperature and degree of crystallinity of the neat polypropylene decreased with increasing content of the SSC flour.
