The response of men to affirmative action strategies for women: The study of a predictive model.

Evaluated the effect of relative deprivation on behalf of others (RDBO), social identification (IDEN), and intergroup differentiation (DIFF) on attitudes of men and their behavioral intentions concerning affirmative action strategies on behalf of women. The variables were integrated in a predictive model that was tested using path analysis. 122 male university students (aged 17–36 yrs) participated by responding to a questionnaire pertaining to IDEN, DIFF, RDBO, and intentions. Intentions to affirmative action strategies were influenced by social identity and RDBO. RDBO acted as a mediating variable between intergroup differentiation and intentions to implement affirmative action strategies. Measurement of femtosecond pulse shapes via ionization of air

In summary, we have demonstrated a new method for the characterization of ultrashort pulses which can be easily implemented and which is particularly well suited to high intensity lasers. It is shown that it is possible to simply determine the temporal shape of femtosecond pulses using plasma-induced cross-phase modulation in ionized air     

Economic feasibility of energy efficiency measures in residential buildings

A study has been performed to develop cost benefit data to be used by a local electric utility in defining a rebate program to encourage energy efficient construction in the Desert Southwest region of the USA. Several potential efficiency upgrades for production homes in the region were identified and an evaluation of each building component was performed using building energy simulation software. A model home developed in Las Vegas was used to calibrate the numerical model and was considered as a basis for further study. The validated building models were then used to predict the annual energy savings and payback periods for various upgrades. In all cases, comparisons were made to code-built houses with the same general overall characteristics. Useful life of most of these upgrades far exceeds their payback periods. It is found that a typical house, with the cost-effective upgrades installed, consumed 42.5% less annual energy compared to a home built to code. A 3.19 kWp PV system installed on the south-facing roof of the home can generate 5982 kWh annually, making it a net-zero (electrical) energy home. PV systems in Las Vegas have encouraging benefit cost ratios when federal and state rebates are considered.

Finite element solution for mass oscillations in a surge tank on sudden valve opening

This paper describes a one-dimensional finite element approach using the method of weighted residuals for the solution of mass oscillations in a surge tank following sudden opening of the valve. At the instant the valve is opened an allowance is made for some flow from the supply tunnel, in addition to that from the surge tank. The theory is, therefore, only altered for the initial conditions by expressing the flow along the tunnel as a percentage of the flow in the penstock. Comparison is made with the experimental result for the maximum downsurge observed in a simple model surge tank.
