To relate population structure and activity to wastewater volume and composition, field trials were conducted at the outlets of two urban catchments that have different population structures (residential-only and mixed). Macropollution and metal micropollution were both considered. In the residential-only catchment, a diurnal pattern with a morning peak (at 10:00) and an evening peak (at 20:00, corresponding to dinner) was observed for all seasons. No difference was observed throughout the year; patterns in summer days, in which daily mobility out of the catchments should be reduced, were similar to those observed in other seasons. For both catchments, N-NH4 (from urine) and chemical oxygen demand (from urine and grey water) correlated with Cu, Zn, Al, Fe and Mn but not with alkaline earth metals. The observed diurnal pattern is associated with work and school mobility and with the general lifestyle of the population. Such an approach is useful to model expected domestic pollution patterns, with respect to lifestyle changes in the future. 相似文献
Recent discussions in clinical health psychology regarding foundational (knowledge-based) and functional (applied) competencies have been guided by the cube model of core competencies (Rodolfa et al., 2005). Proposed competencies for doctoral-level clinical health psychologists were recently published (France et al., 2008). Based on the 2008 Council of Clinical Health Psychology Training Programs conference, we discuss how the proposed competencies might be incorporated into doctoral-level training. Because we view these competencies and training practices to be aspirational, we also address the challenges inherent in making curricular decisions pertaining to which competencies are emphasized in individual programs and within the context of American Psychological Association accreditation requirements. The chemical analysis of the compounds present in dichloromethane and ethanolic fractions as well as bioassays enable to understand the differences in the durability of Eperua falcata and Eperua grandiflora. The main distinction between these two species is the acidic subfraction of diterpenoid extract, which is antifungal in Eperua falcata when tested under in-vitro conditions. This study also shows that ethanolic fraction plays an important role in the mechanism of natural durability. Furthermore, it reports the first isolation of cativic acid in Eperua falcata wood. 相似文献
Heat transfer experiments were performed with a water-based nanofluid containing 170-nm silicon carbide particles at a 3.7% volume concentration and having potential commercial viability. Heat transfer coefficients for the nanofluid are presented for Reynolds numbers ranging from 3300 to 13,000 and are compared to the base fluid water on the bases of constant Reynolds number, constant velocity, and constant pumping power. Results were also compared to predictions from standard liquid correlations and a recently altered nanofluid correlation. The slip mechanisms of Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis postulated in the altered correlation were investigated in a series of heating and cooling experiments. 相似文献
Patient admissions, discharges, and transfers are high work demand activities that have been associated with 30-day readmissions and increased patient mortality. Most mitigation strategies target peak demand, but variable demand may be more significant. Self-organizing holarchic open systems (SOHOs) and resilience engineering frameworks may explain system behavior, but a few quantitative studies of resilient organizational performance have been published. We used three measures to explore SOHO and resilience engineering constructs. We collected hourly data over 2 years, from five inter-related units in a cardiovascular disease division of a metropolitan teaching hospital. Our results show that information flows (inbound, outbound, answered, and unanswered telephone calls) representing anticipatory management are related to patient flows (patient admissions discharges and transfers) and nurse-staffing levels (nurse-to-patient ratios). We also found overall system stability despite high patient flow effects in lower level units. Unexpectedly, the time to recovery from high patient flow events lasted up to 7 days. We conclude that constructs proposed by resilience engineering can be quantified using simple measures collated within routine operations. The application of nonlinear statistical analyses can uncover important insights about resilient performance that may assist managers in better preparing for managing and recovering from unexpected variation in patient flow.
Abstract A personal experience of political action against genetic engineering in New Zealand led the writer to reflect on the opportunities provided by science and technology curricula for students to develop critical biotechnological literacy. An analysis of relevant New Zealand science and technology curricula shows that although there are opportunities for genetic engineering issues to be explored, such teaching situations are not commonplace. In this study, the literature reflecting the components of scientific literacy for citizenship are reviewed and a strategy for developing critical biotechnological literacy is suggested. 相似文献
