The bovine spongiform encephalopathy epidemic is thought to have occurred as a consequence of feeding prion-infected material to cattle. To avoid the risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy diffusion, the European Commission (Directive 2003/126/EC) established an official method to detect the presence of animal-derived constituents in feedstuffs, using microscopic examination. This method allows easy identification of bone fragments among other animal constituents. The analysis is based on morphological conformation of the fragments and their characterization (mainly of the shape of lacunae) to discriminate among mammalian, poultry, and fish tissues. The aim of this study was to assess the performances of nine European laboratories through a ring trial of the official microscopic method, and to calculate accuracy and reproducibility of the method. In general the reproducibility of the microscopic method was very good (kappa overall = 0.83), with a high sensitivity for all laboratories. Concerning the analysis on the different animal-derived constituents, the results show values of sensitivity with large variability between fish and poultry or mammal. It was generally more difficult to discriminate between mammalian and poultry tissues than fish tissue.  相似文献

Production of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (i.e., one of the basic material of the modern airplanes) is an elaborate process unfree from faults and problems. Errors during the manufacturing or the plies' overlapping, in fact, can cause particular flaws in the resulting material, so compromising its same integrity. Within this framework, ultrasonic tests could be useful to characterize the presence of defect, depending on its dimensions. On the contrary, the requirement of a perfect state for used polymers is unavoidable in order to assure both transport reliability and passenger safety. Therefore, a real-time approach able to recognize and classify the defect starting from the measured ultrasonic echoes could be very useful in industrial applications. The ill-posedness of the so defined process induce a regularization method. In this paper, an heuristic approach is proposed for this aim. Particularly, the proposed method is based on the use of support vector machines. Obtained results assure good performances of the implemented classifier, with very interesting applications.  相似文献

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) sensors suffer from spatial misregistration, an artifact that prevents the accurate acquisition of the spectra. Physical considerations let us assume that the influence of the spatial misregistration on the acquired data depends both on the wavelength and on the across-track position. A scene-based method, based on edge detection, is therefore proposed. Such a procedure measures the variation on the spatial location of an edge between its various monochromatic projections, giving an estimation for spatial misregistration, and also allowing identification of misalignments. The method has been applied to several hyperspectral sensors, either prism, or grating-based designs. The results confirm the dependence assumptions on lambda and theta, spectral wavelength and across-track pixel, respectively. Suggestions are also given to correct for spatial misregistration.  相似文献

Summary: The recycling of post‐consumer plastics leads, in general, to secondary materials having properties worse than those of the reclaimed material and certainly worse than those of the same virgin polymer. This is because of the degradation undergone by the objects during their use and because of the thermo‐mechanical degradation undergone during the reprocessing operations. The change of the molecular architecture is responsible for this worsening of properties. The use of stabilizing systems can slow the degradation during the melt processing but cannot give any improvement of the final properties of the material. In order to enhance the properties of the recycled plastics, some rebuilding of the molecular structure is necessary. The use of suitable additives can enlarge the molecular weight distribution or can create branching and cross‐linking during the melt processing of the photo‐oxidized PE. The processability in film blowing and the mechanical properties of these secondary materials are reported in this work. The rheological behavior, the filmability and most of the mechanical properties of the secondary PE with the rebuilt molecular structure are better than those of the post‐consumer material and similar to those of the virgin polymer.

This paper deals with the application of Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (h-arq) techniques to allow reliable data communications in wireless 3G networks. Basically, retransmission of coded data is endowed with soft combining schemes applied, respectively, to packet replicas, or to decoding algorithm outputs. In particular, the proposed coding scheme takes advantage of error correction capabilities of the turbo codes, while the combining algorithm follows the diversity approach. The performance of the proposedh-arq schemes has been derived by means of a suitable analytical approach and numerical simulations in the case of a typical umts environment. The results highlight the good behavior of the proposed scheme in term of error rate, throughput, packet delivery delay and power reduction.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to assess the predictive capability of different classes of extended plasticity theories (bounding surface plasticity, generalized plasticity and generalized tangential plasticity) in the modeling of incremental nonlinearity, which is one of the most striking features of the mechanical behavior of granular soils, occurring as a natural consequence of the particular nature of grain interactions at the microscale. To this end, the predictions of the various constitutive models considered are compared to the results of a series of Distinct Element simulations performed ad hoc. In the comparison, extensive use is made of the concept of incremental strain-response envelope in order to assess the directional properties of the material response for a given initial state and stress history.  相似文献

Land surface albedo is a key parameter of the Earth’s climate system. It has high variability in space, time, and land cover and it is among the most important variables in climate models. Extensive large-scale estimates can help model calibration and improvement to reduce uncertainties in quantifying the influence of surface albedo changes on the planetary radiation balance. Here, we use satellite retrievals of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface albedo (MCD43A3), high-resolution land-cover maps, and meteorological records to characterize climatological albedo variations in Norway across latitude, seasons, land-cover type (deciduous forests, coniferous forests, and cropland), and topography. We also investigate the net changes in surface albedo and surface air temperature through site pair analysis to mimic the effects of land-use transitions between forests and cropland and among different tree species. We find that surface albedo increases at increasing latitude in the snow season, and cropland and deciduous forests generally have higher albedo values than coniferous forests, but for few days in spring. Topography has a large influence on MODIS albedo retrievals, with values that can change up to 100% for the same land-cover class (e.g. spruce in winter) under varying slopes and aspect of the terrain. Cropland sites have surface air temperature higher than adjacent forested sites, and deciduous forests are slightly colder than adjacent coniferous forests. By integrating satellite measurements and high-resolution vegetation maps, our results provide a large semi-empirical basis that can assist future studies to better predict changes in a fundamental climate-regulating service such as surface albedo.  相似文献

Climate variability induces considerable interannual fluctuations in spring discharge, especially in mountain areas, where groundwater is recharged mainly by rain and snow melt. This study presents the discharge climatological model (DISCLIM), which was developed to test a complexity‐reduced approach to perform historical reconstruction in the lack of physical assumptions. The Mount Cervialto aquifer (Southern Italy) is the test site, where a powerful karst spring is monitored since the 1920s and is very sensitive to climatic conditions. DISCLIM incorporates seasonal precipitation and climate indicators only. Despite its simplicity, DISCLIM has been able to well estimate the yearly fluctuations of discharge hydrological, explaining about 90% of the interannual variability at the calibration stage, and more than 80% at validation stage. This means that DISCLIM can be easily used for estimating the discharge in historical times, when no all the hydrological balance data are available for the purpose.  相似文献
