Personality and mortality risk across the life span: The importance of conscientiousness as a biopsychosocial attribute.

Objective: This study addressed whether personality in childhood and personality in adulthood are independent predictors of mortality risk and the extent to which behavioral and other psychosocial factors can explain observed relationships between personality and mortality risk. Design: This was a prospective longitudinal cohort study of 1,253 male and female Californians over 7 decades (1930-2000). Proportional hazards regressions were the principal analyses. Main Outcome Measures: Mortality risk (in the form of relative hazards) was the primary outcome. Additional tests of mediators and moderators ascertained whether associations between personality and mortality risk remained significant when psychosocial and behavioral variables were statistically controlled. Results: The findings, including a new 14-year additional follow-up in old age, revealed that conscientiousness, measured independently in childhood and adulthood, predicted mortality risk across the full life span. The link from childhood remained robust when adult conscientiousness and certain behavioral variables were controlled. Psychosocial and behavioral variables partly explained the adult conscientiousness-longevity association. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate the utility and complexity of modern personality concepts in understanding health and point to conscientiousness as a key underexplored area for future biopsychosocial studies. Computer design of super-orthogonal space-time trellis codes

Super-orthogonal space-time trellis codes (SOSTTCs) designed by hand can significantly improve the performance of space-time trellis codes. This paper introduces a new representation of SOSTTCs based on a generator matrix that allows a systematic and exhaustive search of all possible codes. This will verify that some of the known codes are optimal, and provides a means to easily implement encoders and decoders with a large number of states without relying on a graphical representation. New codes with up to 256 states that outperform previously known codes are presented     

Avoiding Transient Loops During the Convergence of Link-State Routing Protocols

When using link-state protocols such as OSPF or IS-IS, forwarding loops can occur transiently when the routers adapt their forwarding tables as a response to a topological change. In this paper, we present a mechanism that lets the network converge to its optimal forwarding state without risking any transient loops and the related packet loss. The mechanism is based on an ordering of the updates of the forwarding tables of the routers. Our solution can be used in the case of a planned change in the state of a set of links and in the case of unpredictable changes when combined with a local protection scheme. The supported topology changes are link transitions from up to down, down to up, and updates of link metrics. Finally, we show by simulations that sub-second loop-free convergence is possible on a large Tier-1 ISP network.     

Avoiding Disruptions During Maintenance Operations on BGP Sessions

This paper presents a solution aimed at avoiding losses of connectivity when an eBGP peering link is shut down by an operator for a maintenance. Currently, shutting down an eBGP session can lead to transient losses of connectivity even though alternate path are available at the borders of the network. This is very unfortunate as ISPs face more and more stringent service level agreements, and maintenance operations are predictable operations, so that there is time to adapt to the change and preserve the respect of the service level agreement.     

The human SHIP gene is differentially expressed in cell lineages of the bone marrow and blood

The macrophage colony-stimulating factor receptor and several other hematopoietic growth factor receptors induce the tyrosine phosphorylation of a 145- to 150-kD protein in murine cells. We have previously cloned a cDNA for the murine 150-kD protein, SHIP, and found that it encodes a unique signaling intermediate that binds the SHC PTB domain through at least one tyrosine phosphorylated (NPXY) site in the carboxyl-terminal region. SHIP also contains several potential SH3 domain-binding sites, an SH2 domain for binding other tyrosine phosphorylated proteins, and an enzymatic activity that removes the phosphate from the 5 position of phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-phosphate or from inositol 1,3,4,5-phosphate. SHIP has a negative effect on cell growth and therefore loss or modification may have profound effects on hematopoietic cell development. In this study, we have cloned a cDNA for human SHIP and examined mRNA and protein expression of SHIP and related species in bone marrow and blood cells. Flow cytometry indicates that at least 74% of immature CD34+ cells express SHIP cross-reacting protein species, whereas within the more mature population of CD33+ cells, only 10% of cells have similar expression. The majority of T cells react positively with the anti-SHIP antibodies, but significantly fewer B cells are positive. Immunoblotting detects up to seven different cross-reacting SHIP species, with peripheral blood mononuclear cells exhibiting primarily a 100-kD protein and a CD34+ acute myeloblastic leukemia expressing mainly 130-kD and 145-kD forms of SHIP. Overall, these results indicate that there is an enormous diversity in the size of SHIP or SHIP-related mRNA and protein species. Furthermore, the expression of these protein species changes according to both the developmental stage and differentiated lineage of the mature blood cell.     

Optical designs for ultrahigh-flux infrared and solar energy collection: monolithic dielectric tailored edge-ray concentrators

A new class of optical designs is developed for attaining ultrahigh flux in infrared and solar energy concentrators. These concentrators are required to satisfy simultaneously three criteria: (1) being monolithic, i.e., comprising a single piece of dielectric such that no mirrored surfaces or air spaces between concentrator elements are introduced; (2) attaining at least 90% of the thermodynamic limit to concentration; and (3) being relatively compact, e.g., aspect ratios of the order of unity or less. Our inventions are rooted in the recently developed formalism of tailored edge-ray concentrators.     

Incremental value of prognostic testing in patients with known or suspected ischemic heart disease: a basis for optimal utilization of exercise technetium-99m sestamibi myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the incremental prognostic implications of normal and equivocal exercise technetium-99m (Tc-99m) sestamibi single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and sought to determine its incremental prognostic value, impact on patient management and cost implications. BACKGROUND: The prognostic implications of Tc-99m sestamibi SPECT are not well defined, and risk stratification using this test has not been explored. METHODS: We studied 1,702 patients referred for exercise Tc-99m sestamibi SPECT who were followed up for a mean (+/- SD) of 20 +/- 5 months. Patients with previous percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty or coronary artery bypass surgery were excluded. The SPECT studies were assessed using semiquantitative visual analysis. Cardiac death and myocardial infarction were considered "hard" events, and coronary angioplasty and bypass surgery > 60 days after testing were considered "soft" events. RESULTS: Of the 1,702 patients studied, 1,131 had normal or equivocal scan results. A total of 10 events occurred in this group (1 cardiac death and 1 myocardial infarction [0.2% hard events]; 4 coronary angioplasty and 4 bypass surgery procedures [0.7% soft events]). The rates of hard events and referral to catheterization after SPECT were similarly low in patients with a low (< 0.15), intermediate (0.15 to 0.85) and high (> 0.85) post-exercise treadmill test (ETT) likelihood of coronary artery disease. With respect to scan type, patients with normal, probably normal or equivocal scan results had similarly low hard event rates. In the 571 patients with abnormal scan results, there were 43 hard events (7.5%) and 42 soft events (7.4%) (p < 0.001 vs. 1,131 patients with normal scan results for both). When the complete spectrum of scan responses was considered, SPECT provided incremental prognostic value in all patient subgroups analyzed. However, the nuclear scan was cost-effective only in patients with interpretable exercise ECG responses and an intermediate to high post-ETT likelihood of coronary artery disease and in those with uninterpretable exercise ECG responses and an intermediate to high pre-ETT likelihood of coronary artery disease. CONCLUSIONS: Normal or equivocal exercise Tc-99m sestamibi study results are associated with a benign prognosis, even in patients with a high likelihood of coronary artery disease. Although incremental prognostic value is added by nuclear testing in all patient subgroups, a testing strategy incorporating nuclear testing proved to be cost-effective only in the groups with an intermediate to high likelihood of coronary artery disease before scanning.     

RF MEMS continuous reversible variable inductor based on a microfluidic network

In this work, RF MEMS continuous reversible variable inductor has been fabricated by using microelectronic technology and lamination process. We review, evaluate and compare this variable inductor with other work. The proposed inductor is a dual circular coil and has an inductance of few nH. The fundamental idea is to place a liquid droplet between the metal turns of a coil in order to modify the capacitive/resistive coupling between metal tracks and hence to change the stored magnetic energy. The SU-8 resin was used to realize the microfluidic channels and Au as metallic tracks. To prove the reversibility of the inductor, two cases were studied: filling and emptying of channels. The tuning range of the inductance is approximately 107 % at 1.6 GHz, making these devices very suitable as building blocks in many RF applications.     

First-class extents

Adding environments as first-class entities to a language can greatly enhance its expressiveness. But first-class environments rely on identifiers, the syntax of variables, and thus do not mesh well with lexically-scoped languages. We present first-class extents as an alternative. First-class extents are founded upon lexical variables with dynamic extent. They are defined directly on the variables themselves rather than on their syntax. They therefore do not cause variable name capturing problems that plague first-class environments. Moreover, distinguishing variables from locations allows first-class extents to be orthogonal to imperative and control features.
