Clarification of the five-factor model with the Abridged Big Five Dimensional Circumplex.

Shows how the Abridged Big Five Dimensional Circumplex (AB5C; W. K. Hofstee, et al; see PA, Vol 79:39188 ) clarifies disputes about the Big Five or 5-factor model. Trait ratings from instruments representing 4 versions of the Big Five (L. R. Goldberg, see PA, Vol 79:25730; R. Hogan and J. A. Johnson, 1981; R. R. McCrae and P. T. Costa, see PA, Vols 73:3750 and 74:15614; and W. T. Norman, 1963) were subjected to separate AB5C analyses for 2,148 American and 1,285 German Ss. Replicated results formed standard designation codes representing trait adjectives' primary and secondary factor loadings. These codes unveiled the unique coloring imparted by secondary loadings to different scales proffered by researchers to represent the 5 factors. Zeolites as media for hydrogen storage

The use of zeolites as media for hydrogen storage was investigated using zeolites of different pore architecture and composition at temperatures from 293 to 573K and pressures from 2.5 to 10.0 MPa. The results suggest that zeolites containing sodalite cages in their structure are particularly suitable. Accordingly, the highest storage capacity was obtained with sodalite, i.e. the zeolite with the highest concentration of sodalite cages. This material showed a hydrogen storage capacity of 9.2 cm³/g if loaded at 573K and 10.0 MPa.     

An even magneto-optic effect: Linear polarization of the spectral thermal emission from ferromagnetic iron

The thermal spectral emission from ferromagnetic iron observed at normal incidence and with the magnetization parallel to its surface is partially linearly polarized. Measurements of the new even magneto-optic effect have been performed in the spectral range from 1.8 μm to 5 μm wave-length.     

Malignant blue nevus with metastasis to lymph nodes and brain

We report a patient who developed malignant transformation of a cellular blue nevus. At the age of 19 years the congenital, pigmented tumor on the left buttock was histopathologically diagnosed as cellular blue nevus. Thirty years later the tumor dramatically increased in size, involving the entire left buttock within several months. Multiple biopsies revealed the presence of a cellular blue nevus within the papillary dermis and an invasive, pleomorphic pigmented sarcoma in the depth of the tissue spreading into subcutis and skeletal muscle. Both benign and malignant cells were S100+, vimentin+ and HMB-45+, but only the malignant tumor cells stained positive for the proliferating cell nuclear antigen. General examination disclosed multiple metastases in the paraaortal lymph nodes and the retroperitoneum as well as a single brain metastasis. Despite palliative therapy with ionizing radiation and chemotherapy, the patient developed generalized metastases and died within weeks. This case clearly confirms that cellular blue nevi have the potential for malignant transformation and that the malignant variant may behave aggressively just as a malignant melanoma.     

Measuring the viscoelastic properties of human platelets with the atomic force microscope

We have measured force curves as a function of the lateral position on top of human platelets with the atomic force microscope. These force curves show the indentation of the cell as the tip loads the sample. By analyzing these force curves we were able to determine the elastic modulus of the platelet with a lateral resolution of approximately 100 nm. The elastic moduli were in a range of 1-50 kPa measured in the frequency range of 1-50 Hz. Loading forces could be controlled with a resolution of 80 pN and indentations of the platelet could be determined with a resolution of 20 nm.
