POLYMER-SUPPORTED REAGENTS FOR MOLECULAR SEPARATIONS

A Hammett study of the complexing abilities of various polymer-supported reagents for phenols, anilines, and benzoic acids is described. For each polymeric reagent, the percent absorbed of each family of compounds is correlated with the Hammett substituent constants. A carboxylic acid resin shows no interaction with phenols and benzoic acids; only a weak interaction with anilines is found since 25% of each is absorbed regardless of the substituent present on the aromatic ring. This contrasts with the strong interaction displayed by the sulfonic resin and the moderate interaction of the phosphinic resin. Phosphonic and phosphonate monoester resins absorb increasing amounts of anilines as their basicity increases. The purely coordinating- phosphonate diester resin absorbs uniformly low levels of the three families of compounds with no substituent effect on the percent absorbed. The sulfonic resin quantitatively absorbs the anilines within the temperature range 6 to 40 C while the phosphinic resin absorbs decreasing levels within the same range. The phosphinic resin is more selective than the sulfonic resin under competitive conditions     

Characterization of the bacterial flora isolated from a pilot-scale lagoon processing swine manure

The bacterial flora of an experimental plant that processes liquid swine manure by an aerated compartmented (multistage) lagoon system has been studied. The total flora is characterized by a larger number of oligotrophic bacteria than eutrophic ones. Each compartment displays a specific flora, different from the flora in the manure, and consisting of a complex assembly of Gram-negative and Gram-positive ubiquitous species, such as Aeromonas spp. and Pseudomonas spp., and specialized species, such as Sphingobacterium spp. and Corynebacterium spp. The fecal indicator microorganisms have been shown to disappear in the course of the processing. A significant population of nitrifying bacteria has been observed at levels up to 10(4) bacteria.mL-1.

Inhibition of reaper-induced apoptosis by interaction with inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs)

IAPs comprise a family of inhibitors of apoptosis found in viruses and animals. In vivo binding studies demonstrated that both baculovirus and Drosophila IAPs physically interact with an apoptosis-inducing protein of Drosophila, Reaper (RPR), through their baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) region. Expression of IAPs blocked RPR-induced apoptosis and resulted in the accumulation of RPR in punctate perinuclear locations which coincided with IAP localization. When expressed alone, RPR rapidly disappeared from the cells undergoing RPR-induced apoptosis. Expression of P35, a caspase inhibitor, also blocked RPR-induced apoptosis and delayed RPR decline, but RPR remained cytoplasmic in its location. Mutational analysis of RPR demonstrated that caspases were not directly responsible for RPR disappearance. The physical interaction of IAPs with RPR provides a molecular mechanism for IAP inhibition of RPR's apoptotic activity.

Acceptance of physical disability and attitudes toward personal appearance.

Investigated appearance management (AM) as a social–psychological variable in 322 physically disabled university students. The questionnaire included an AM and social interaction scale and measures of acceptance of disability. A tendency to regard AM as a form of compensation was associated with a tendency to view physical disability as a central or salient aspect of personal identity. Data suggest that AM is regarded by some as a means for ameliorating the social impact of a physical disability, but is expected to serve only a secondary role in impression formation.
