The nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR) of the accessory optic system is known to be involved in the analysis of the visual consequences of self-motion. Previous studies have shown that the nBOR in pigeons projects bilaterally to the vestibulocerebellum, the inferior olive, the interstitial nucleus of Cajal, and the oculomotor complex and projects unilaterally to the ipsilateral pretectal nucleus lentiformis mesencephali and the contralateral nBOR. By using the anterograde tracer biotinylated dextran amine, we confirmed these projections and found (previously unreported) projections to the nucleus Darkshewitsch, the nucleus ruber, the mesencephalic reticular formation, and the area ventralis of Tsai as well as ipsilateral projections to the central gray, the pontine nuclei, the cerebellar nuclei, the vestibular nuclei, the processus cerebellovestibularis, and the dorsolateral thalamus. In addition to previous studies, which showed a projection to the dorsomedial subdivision of the contralateral oculomotor complex, we found terminal labelling in the ventral and dorsolateral subdivisions. Individual fibers were reconstructed from serial sections, and collaterals to various nuclei were demonstrated. For example, collaterals of fibers projecting to the vestibulocerebellum terminated in the vestibular or cerebellar nuclei; collaterals of fibers to the inferior olive terminated in the pontine nuclei; many individual neurons projected to the interstitial nucleus of Cajal, the nucleus Darkshewitsch, and the central gray and also projected to the nucleus ruber and the mesencephalic reticular formation; collaterals of fibers to the contralateral nucleus of the basal optic root terminated in the mesencephalic reticular formation and/or the area ventralis of Tsai; neurons projecting to the nucleus lentiformis mesencephali also terminated in the dorsolateral thalamus. The consequences of these data for understanding the visual control of eye movements, neck movements, posture, locomotion, and visual perception are discussed.  相似文献

The Federal German Water Law of 1976 postulated for the first time that a licence for the discharge of wastewater into public watercourses might only be granted when the wastewater, prior to discharge, is treated according to laid-down standards. In 1976 it was also decided that for the residual pollution load in sewage-treatment plant effluents a pollution fee has to be paid.
At present three pollution units have to be paid per capita and annually for untreated domestic wastewater. One pollution unit is assessed at 17/annum, but the price will be increased to 30/annum in future.
Since the pollution units encompass COD, nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, and chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds, the pollution unit is a good tool to compare the effectiveness of treatment. For different drainage systems the residual pollution units (per litre and second) can also be calculated for low-flow conditions.  相似文献

The N-acetymuramic acid L-alanine amidase from Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6051) has been purified to homogeneity. It is a monomeric protein of molecular weight 50,000. The enzyme has a high affinity for homologous cell walls and once attached to a cell wall will hydrolyze the wall completely before initiating the hydrolysis of a new cell wall. The affinity of the enzyme for cell walls devoid of teichoic acid or for cell walls of Bacillus megaterium is much lower than that for B. subtilis cell walls. A second homogenous protein has been isolated from B. subtilis which specifically combines with the amidase in a 1:1 molar ratio and stimulates enzyme activity. This modifier protein has no intrinsic cell wall lytic activity. The binding of enzyme and modifier protein has a dissociation constant of 8.5 times 10-9 M in 0.1 M LiCl, pH 8.0, but the two proteins can be completely dissociated in 3 M LiCl at pH 8.0.  相似文献

Intraocular pressure was artificially elevated for eight hours in eight owl monkeys. The first permanent effect (produced at a perfusion pressure of plus 15 mm Hg) was partial necrosis of iris stroma and ciliary processes, associated with microscopic lesions in the photoreceptors and retina pigment epithelium around the disc and in the retinal periphery. At a slightly higher pressure, visual nerve fibers in the retina and optic nerve and their ganglion cells were affected. Simultaneously, the outer retinal layers showed damage to the pigment epithelium, photoreceptors, and other nuclear layers. At even higher pressures, nearly all the other intraocular tissues were affected except for Müller cells, astroglia in the optic nerve head, epithelium of the pars plana, and the pigment cells of the choroid. The possibility is raised of a nonischemic pressure-induced mechanism for destruction of disc astrocytes in human chronic glaucoma.  相似文献

Of 402 patients with cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, and supraglottic larynx treated at Stanford between 1957 and 1972, 164 had clinically uninvolved cervical lymph nodes prior to the initiation of radiation therapy. Lymph node metastases developed later in 38 per cent of patients with primary oral cavity carcinomas who were treated with interstitial radium implants alone. No late cervical lymph node involvement was found in those patients who received high dose external irradiation to at least the primary site and first echelon lymph nodes. Lymph node failures were ultimately noted in 20 of the 140 patients (14 per cent), who received partial or complete neck irradiation, but 18 of these occurred in patients with uncontrolled primary lesions, suggesting that re-seeding of cervical lymph nodes had taken place rather than failure of the initial irradiation to control subclinical metastases. Our present policy is to treat the primary lesion and adjacent lymph nodes with high dose megavoltage techniques, combined with interstitial irradiation if possible. Bilateral supplemental inferior neck radiation ports are added for patients with advanced primary neoplasms and for those with clinically involved cervical lymph nodes. All other patients undergoing radiation therapy for stage T1 primary lesions and clinically negative necks also receive ipsilateral low neck irradiation. In addition, cervical lymph nodes are electively irradiated when the primary lesion has been resected. When these policies are adopted, the incidence of cervical lymph node failures is extremely low in patients whose primary sites remain controlled, and morbidity from the cervical radiation fields is negligible.  相似文献

We compared daily urinary concentrations of oestrogen and progesterone metabolites in paired menstrual cycles (conception and non-conception) from 32 women. Volunteers with no known fertility problems were enrolled in the study at the time they began trying to become pregnant. They collected first-morning urine specimens and kept daily records of menstrual bleeding and sexual intercourse for 6 months or until they became clinically pregnant. Intercourse in non-conception cycles was close to the time of ovulation so that failure to conceive was caused by factors other than poorly timed intercourse. Compared with non-conception cycles, conception cycles had a steeper early luteal rise in progesterone and higher mid-luteal oestrogen and progesterone concentrations. These hormonal characteristics may be markers of better quality cycles, but because all these differences were in the luteal phase, we cannot rule out the possibility that the preimplantation embryo had stimulated early increases in steroid production. We propose an analysis strategy that could help support or refute the importance of preimplantation embryonic signalling, but our small sample size limits our own conclusions about this mechanism.  相似文献
