Additive manufacturing, sometimes referred to as 3D printing is a new, rapidly developing technology which has the potential to revolutionize fabrication of certain high value, complex products. Until now conventional elastomers have not been widely used in the additive manufacturing process. The goal of our work was to determine the feasibility of additive manufacturing using ink jet printing of elastomeric latex materials. Particle size, viscosity, and surface tension were measured for five different latex materials—poly(2‐chloro‐1,3‐butadiene), carboxylated styrene‐butadiene rubber, carboxylated butadiene‐acrylonitrile copolymer, natural rubber, and prevulcanized natural rubber. The XSBR latex was predicted as the one most likely to be printable. Printing trials carried out with the XSBR as the ink proved it to be printable, although technical problems of agglomeration and print head clogging need to be addressed and both the material and process need to be optimized for consistent printing to be achieved. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The rabbit platelet metabolizes platelet-activating factor (PAF) intracellulary. PAF is deacetylated to produce lysoPAF which, in turn, can be acylated to produce 1-O-alkyl-2-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (alkylacyl GPC). Some PAF receptor antagonists have been shown to inhibit this metabolic conversion. In the present study we examined whether the PAF receptor antagonists SRI 63-441 and WEB 2086 would inhibit the metabolism of PAF by intact rabbit platelets. In addition, we examined whether iloprost, a stable analogue of prostaglandin I2 (PGI2), and a potent inhibitor of platelet activation induced by a range of agonists, would also inhibit PAF metabolism. We found that SRI 63-441 and WEB 2086 caused an almost complete inhibition of the conversion of PAF to alkylacyl GPC. Iloprost caused up to a 50% inhibition of PAF metabolism compared to antagonist-free controls. Iloprost (and PGI2) is thought to inhibit platelet response by elevation of cAMP, while receptor antagonists act by blocking PAF binding to its receptor. Since iloprost caused partial inhibition of PAF metabolism, the results of this study suggest that inhibition of PAF metabolism does not occur solely due to competitive inhibition of PAF binding to its receptor. Listeriosis is a foodborne disease caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The food industry and government agencies devote considerable resources to reducing contamination of ready-to-eat foods with L. monocytogenes. Because inactivation treatments can effectively eliminate L. monocytogenes present on raw materials, postprocessing cross-contamination from the processing plant environment appears to be responsible for most L. monocytogenes food contamination events. An improved understanding of cross-contamination pathways is critical to preventing L. monocytogenes contamination. Therefore, a plant-specific mathematical model of L. monocytogenes cross-contamination was developed, which described the transmission of L. monocytogenes contamination among food, food contact surfaces, employees' gloves, and the environment. A smoked fish processing plant was used as a model system. The model estimated that 10.7% (5th and 95th percentile, 0.05% and 22.3%, respectively) of food products in a lot are likely to be contaminated with L. monocytogenes. Sensitivity analysis identified the most significant input parameters as the frequency with which employees' gloves contact food and food contact surfaces, and the frequency of changing gloves. Scenario analysis indicated that the greatest reduction of the within-lot prevalence of contaminated food products can be achieved if the raw material entering the plant is free of contamination. Zero contamination of food products in a lot was possible but rare. This model could be used in a risk assessment to quantify the potential public health benefits of in-plant control strategies to reduce cross-contamination.  相似文献

Noncompliance is a common problem exhibited by children with developmental delay (DD; Walker, 1993). The authors evaluated whether performance on the Assessment of Basic Learning Abilities (ABLA) test would predict compliance of children with and without DD to instructions alone (IA) versus instructions with modelling and/or gestures (IMG) administered by their caregivers. The ABLA test uses standard prompting and reinforcement procedures to assess the ease or difficulty with which a testee is able to learn a simple imitation and five two-choice discriminations. Twenty-one children without DD and 16 children with DD were presented with five age-appropriate educational tasks by their respective caregivers in a structured teaching session that included IA on some trials and IMG on others. The ABLA test performance reliably predicted the compliance of the children in the two conditions, and the results were consistent across both groups. The results are important for providing information to caregivers on how best to instruct their children in an effort to increase compliance. The dissolution kinetics in 2 M H2SO4 of variously dehydroxylated nickeliferous goethites was investigated for five oxide-type lateritic nickel deposits. Goethite was the main constituent with minor amounts of quartz, talc, kaolinite and Mn oxides. Dissolution of Fe from heated materials followed the Kabai equation. There was a 9–34-fold increase in the Kabai dissolution rate constant (k) for samples heated at 340–400 °C due to both the increased surface area (1.5–2.6 fold) and higher density of structural defects (5–10 fold) in the variously dehydroxylated products. The presence of structural Al and Cr in goethite appears to reduce dissolution rate possibly through the greater M3+–OH, O bond strength relative to Fe3+, Ni2+–OH, O. Nickel showed congruent dissolution with Fe indicating that Ni was uniformly incorporated in the goethite structure. Pre-heating goethite to 600–800 °C for 30 min resulted in incongruent dissolution of Fe and Ni. It is postulated that some Ni is ejected from the neo-formed hematite structure and resides on the crystal surface or in voids. These results may contribute to the development of more efficient procedures for Ni extraction including heap leaching of lateritic nickel ores.  相似文献

A deletion polymorphism in the serotonin transporter-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) has been associated with vulnerability to affective disorders, yet the mechanism by which this gene confers vulnerability remains unclear. Two studies examined associations between the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism and attentional bias for emotional stimuli among nondepressed adults. Biased attention, attention engagement, and difficulty with attention disengagement were assessed with a spatial cuing task using emotional stimuli. Results from Study 1 (N = 38) indicated that short 5-HTTLPR allele carriers experienced greater difficulty disengaging their attention from sad and happy stimuli compared with long allele homozygotes. Study 2 participants (N = 144) were genotyped for the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism, including single nucleotide polymorphism rs25531 in the long allele of the 5-HTTLPR. Consistent with Study 1, individuals homozygous for the low-expressing 5-HTTLPR alleles (i.e., S and LG) experienced greater difficulty disengaging attention from sad, happy, and fear stimuli than high-expressing 5-HTTLPR homozygotes. Because this association exists in healthy adults, it may represent a susceptibility factor for affective disorders that becomes problematic during stressful life experiences. This study examined an important but rarely investigated aspect of the dissemination process: the intensity of training provided to practitioners. Counselors in 57 schools were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 conditions: Coping Power–training plus feedback (CP-TF), Coping Power–basic training (CP-BT), or a comparison condition. CP-TF counselors produced reductions in children’s externalizing behavior problems and improvements in children’s social and academic skills in comparison to results for target children in both the comparison and the CP-BT conditions. Training intensity was critical for successful dissemination, although the implementation mechanism underlying this effect remains unclear, as condition effects were not significant for completion of session objectives but were significant for the quality of counselors’ engagement with children.
