Male coconut rhinoceros beetles,Oryctes rhinoceros (L.), produce three sex-specific compounds, ethyl 4-methyloctanoate, ethyl 4-methylheptanoate, and 4-methyloctanoic acid, the first of which is an aggregation pheromone. Synthesis of these compounds involving conjugate addition of organocuprates to ethyl acrylate is reported. In field trapping experiments, (4S)-ethyl 4-methyloctanoate and the racemic mixture were equally attractive and 10 times more effective in attracting beetles than ethyl chrysanthemumate, a previously recommended attractant. Ethyl 4-methylheptanoate was as attractive as ethyl chrysanthemumate and more attractive than 4-methyloctanoic acid, but further studies are required before it can be classed as an aggregation pheromone. Compared to ethyl 4-methyloctanoate alone, combinations of the three male-produced compounds did not increase attraction, whereas addition of freshly rotting oil palm fruit bunches to pheromone-baited traps significantly enhanced attraction. With increasing dose, captures ofO. rhinoceros increased, but doses of 6, 9, and 18 mg/day were competitive with 30 mg/day lures. Newly designed vane traps were more effective in capturing beetles than were barrier or pitfall traps. Results of this study indicate that there is potential for using ethyl 4-methyloctanoate in operational programs to controlO. rhinoceros in oil palm plantations.  相似文献

Biodiesel, an “alternative” diesel fuel derived from vegetable oils, animals fats or used frying oils, largely consists of the mono-alkyl esters of the fatty acids comprising these feedstocks. One of the major technical issue facing biodiesel is its susceptibility to oxidation upon exposure to oxygen in ambient air. This susceptibility is due to its content of unsaturated fatty acid chains, especially those with bis-allylic methylene moieties. Oxidation of fatty acid chains is a complex process that proceeds by a variety of mechanisms. Besides the presence of air, various other factors influence the oxidation process of biodiesel including presence of light, elevated temperature, extraneous materials such as metals which may be even present in the container material, peroxides, and antioxidants, as well as the size of the surface area between biodiesel and air. Approaches to improving biodiesel oxidative stability include the deliberate addition of antioxidants or modification of the fatty ester profile. This article discusses some factors influencing biodiesel oxidative stability and their interaction. Resulting approaches to improving this property of biodiesel are related to these factors and the corresponding mechanisms.  相似文献

Bulk condensations of 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone and various silylated bisphenols were carried out at 220°–320°C, with caesium fluoride as catalyst. Silylated bisphenol-A, tetramethylbisphenol-A, 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexane or 4,4′-dihydroxydiphenylsulphone as monomers and glassy polymers were soluble in several organic solvents. Their glass transitions were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.) and their number molecular weights (M?n) determined by means of vapour pressure osmometry. Mn's up to 10 000 were obtained. When silylated hydroquinone, 4,4′-dihydroxydiphenyl, 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene or 4,4′-dihydroxydiphenylsulphide undergo polycondensation the resulting poly (ether ketone)s form crystals. It is demonstrated that transesterification does not take place and that block copoly(ether ketone-ether sulphone)s are synthesized. Furthermore, the thermostability of the poly(ether ketone)s in air was investigated.  相似文献

Nine different metal oxide catalysts were prepared by impregnating alumina washcoats with water solutions containing La3+, Sr2+, Cu2+ and Ru3+ ions and calcining them at 900°C. The produced samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies combined with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis, X-ray powder diffraction and specific surface area measurements. A perovskite phase of the nominal composition La1-xSrxAl1-2yCuyRuyO3 was found in all samples, in increasing amount in the samples with increasing contents of strontium and ruthenium. The catalysts were evaluated with respect to light-off temperatures and redox characteristics using two gas mixtures, one containing NO/CO/C3H6/O2/N2 and the other NO/CO/N2. The light-off temperatures for nitric oxide reduction decreased from 534 to 333°C for the catalysts without and with strontium and ruthenium, respectively. In the presence of oxygen the conversion of nitric oxide declined rapidly under oxidative conditions whereas in absence of oxygen this decline was less pronounced and found to be linear over the entire redox interval studied. These studies suggest that the perovskite phase takes an active part in the conversion of nitric oxide and carbon monoxide to nitrogen and carbon dioxide.  相似文献

In most studies on animal learning, individual animals are tested separately in a specific learning environment and with a limited number of trials per day. An alternative approach is to test animals in a familiar environment in their social group. In this study, the authors--applying a fully automated learning device--investigated voluntary, self-controlled visual shape discrimination learning of group-housed dwarf goats (Capra hircus). The majority of the tested goats showed successful shape discrimination, which indicates the adaptive value of an effective learning strategy. However, in each group, a few individual goats developed behavioral strategies different from shape discrimination to get reward. Relocation impairs memory retrieval (probably by attention shifting) only temporarily for previously learnt shapes. The results demonstrate the usefulness of a self-controlled learning paradigm to assess learning abilities of social species in their normal social settings. Tracking is an indispensable part of any virtual reality and augmented reality application. While the need for quality of tracking, in particular for high performance and fidelity, has led to a large body of past and current research, little attention is typically paid to software engineering aspects of tracking software. To address this issue we describe a software design and implementation that applies the pipes-and-filter architectural pattern to provide a customizable and flexible way of dealing with tracking data and configurations. The contribution of this work cumulates in the development of a generic data flow network library called OpenTracker to deal specifically with tracking data. The flexibility of the data flow network approach is demonstrated in a set of development scenarios and prototype applications in the area of mobile augmented reality.  相似文献
