By means of DNDA nitramine fractions in the formulation, it is hoped to produce gun propellants that have an almost temperature‐independent burning behavior. The reason for this behavior is not clear yet. In the last years, it has become known that pressure oscillations may occur in the hole channels of gun propellant grains that may lead to a modification of the burning. To analyze the impact of such oscillations on the burning behavior of DNDA powders, tests with two different DNDA powders were performed in a closed vessel. This article reports the purification and surface modification of coal ash silica and afterwards its utilization as reinforcing filler in solution‐styrene‐butadiene rubber/butadiene rubber (S‐SBR/BR). The coal ash silica free of unwanted metal ions/mineral oxides was obtained using phosphoric acid. The chemical composition of the purified coal ash silica in comparison to impure coal ash indicates the presence of characteristic hydroxyl functional group at 3440 cm?1 and an increase in the oxygen content as determined with the help of Fourier Transform Infrared and x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The contact angle analysis shows that after purification the polar part of the surface energy increased to 17.5 from 12 m Jm?2. While the surface area increased to an order of magnitude, i.e., 11.6 to 110.5 m2 g?1. The modification of purified silica particles with bis(3‐triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasulfane reveal the functionalization of hydroxyl to ‐Si‐O‐R groups as detected at 1560 cm?1. As a consequence, the modified silica based S‐SBR/BR composite resulted in improved mechanical properties due to enhanced silica‐rubber interaction. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Barrier dysfunction of airway epithelium contributes to the development of allergies, airway hyper-responsiveness and immunological respiratory diseases. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) enhance and restore the barrier function of the intestinal epithelium. This study investigated whether acetate, propionate and butyrate enhance the integrity of bronchial epithelial cells. Differentiating human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE) grown on transwells were exposed to butyrate, propionate and acetate while trans-epithelial electrical resistance was monitored over time. Restorative effects of SCFA were investigated by subsequent incubation of cells with IL-4, IL-13 or house dust mite extract and SCFA. SCFA effects on IL-4-induced cytokine production and the expression of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signalling pathways were investigated by ELISA and Western blot assays. Propionate and butyrate enhanced the barrier function of differentiating 16HBE cells and induced complete recovery of the barrier function after exposure to the above-mentioned stimuli. Butyrate decreased IL-4-induced IL-6 production. IL-4 decreased ZO-1 protein expression and induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2) and c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) in 16HBE cells, both of which could be restored by SCFA. SCFA showed prophylactic and restorative effects on airway epithelial barrier function, which might be induced by increased ZO-1 expression. 相似文献

This investigation reports the synthesis of a new class of polyurethane (PU) based on bis(hydroxyalkyl) polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as diol and isophorone diisocyanate as diisocyanate followed by the preparation of PU/layered double hydroxide (PU/LDH) nanocomposite via ex-situ technique. Nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy studies confirm the formation of PU and incorporation of PDMS into the PU backbone. Thermogravimetry analysis revealed that thermal stability of the composite improves significantly with incorporation of LDH into the PU matrix. This may be accredited to the barrier effect rendered by the LDH layers. Differential scanning calorimetry study reveals that with the incorporation of LDH, glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composite increases for an optimum level of loading beyond which it remains constant. 相似文献

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) caused by cigarette smoke (CS) is featured by oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. Due to the poor efficacy of standard glucocorticoid therapy, new treatments are required. Here, we investigated whether the novel compound SUL-151 with mitoprotective properties can be used as a prophylactic and therapeutic treatment in a murine CS-induced inflammation model. SUL-151 (4 mg/kg), budesonide (500 μg/kg), or vehicle were administered via oropharyngeal instillation in this prophylactic and therapeutic treatment setting. The number of immune cells was determined in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Oxidative stress response, mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, and mitophagy-related proteins were measured in lung homogenates. SUL-151 significantly decreased more than 70% and 50% of CS-induced neutrophils in BALF after prophylactic and therapeutic administration, while budesonide showed no significant reduction in neutrophils. Moreover, SUL-151 prevented the CS-induced decrease in ATP and mitochondrial mtDNA and an increase in putative protein kinase 1 expression in the lung homogenates. The concentration of SUL-151 was significantly correlated with malondialdehyde level and radical scavenging activity in the lungs. SUL-151 inhibited the increased pulmonary inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction in this CS-induced inflammation model, which implied that SUL-151 might be a promising candidate for COPD treatment. 相似文献

The skin’s barrier ability is an essential function for terrestrial survival, which is controlled by intercellular lipids within the stratum corneum (SC) layer. In this barrier, free fatty acids (FFAs) are an important lipid class. As seen in inflammatory skin diseases, when the lipid chain length is reduced, a reduction in the barrier’s performance is observed. In this study, we have investigated the contributing effects of various FFA chain lengths on the lamellar phase, lateral packing. The repeat distance of the lamellar phase increased with FFA chain length (C20–C28), while shorter FFAs (C16 to C18) had the opposite behaviour. While the lateral packing was affected, the orthorhombic to hexagonal to fluid phase transitions were not affected by the FFA chain length. Porcine SC lipid composition mimicking model was then used to investigate the proportional effect of shorter FFA C16, up to 50% content of the total FFA mixture. At this level, no difference in the overall lamellar phases and lateral packing was observed, while a significant increase in the water permeability was detected. Our results demonstrate a FFA C16 threshold that must be exceeded before the structure and barrier function of the long periodicity phase (LPP) is affected. These results are important to understand the lipid behaviour in this unique LPP structure as well as for the understanding, treatment, and development of inflammatory skin conditions. 相似文献

We present a mixed-mode VLSI chip performing unsupervised clustering and classification, implementing models of Fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) and Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ), and extending to variants such as Kohonen Self-Organizing Maps (SOM). The parallel processor classifies analog vectorial data into a digital code in a single clock, and implements on-line learning of the analog templates, stored locally and dynamically using the same adaptive circuits for on-chip quantization and refresh. The unit cell performing fuzzy choice and vigilance functions, adaptive resonance learning and long-term analog storage, measures 43 m×43 m in 1.2 m CMOS technology. We explore the possibility of generating high-velocity flows of nanoparticles through flat-rectangular nanochannels, which are only 50% deeper than the diameter of the particles. Using the shear-driven flow principle, 200-nm particles can, for example, be transported through a 300-nm-deep channel at velocities up to 35 mm/s (upper limit of our current setup). Working under high-pH conditions, the velocity of the carboxylated nanoparticles still respects the small-molecule velocity law, despite the high degree of confinement to which the particles are subjected. The high degree of confinement is also found to lead to a reduced band broadening. When injecting sharply delimited particle plugs, the plate heights observed for the flow of 0.2-microm particles through a 0.3-microm channel (with plate heights of the order of 1-2 microm) are, for example, approximately 1 order of magnitude smaller than for the flow of 1.0-microm particles through a 1.4-microm channel. It is also found that the band broadening is, within its statistical variation, independent of the fluid velocity over a large range of particle velocities (5-35 mm/s). The flow method distinguishes itself from pressure-driven field-flow fractionation and hydrodynamic chromatography in that the mean particle velocity is independent of the particle size over the entire range of possible particle to channel diameter ratios. 相似文献

The influence of the detailed design of the sidewall region upon the over-all band-broadening in microfabricated packed-bed or collocated monolithic support structure (COMOSS) columns has been investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation techniques. It is shown that, under unretained solute conditions, very small structural variations of the order of only 5% of the particle diameter can give rise to a 4-fold increase of the band-broadening. A comprehensive study has been made to quantify this effect as a function of the fluid velocity, the particle diameter, the channel widths, and of course, the sidewall region design. Because the sidewall effect can be fully attributed to a mismatch between the flow rates in the column center and in the sidewall region, it is fortunately also quite straightforward to avoid it. A very simple design, yielding band-broadening values identical to that of a hypothetical sidewall-less column for all possible values of the flow velocity, the particle diameter, or the channel width is proposed. 相似文献
