Five groups of salmon, of initial mean weight 127±3 g, were fed increasing levels of dietary linseed oil (LO) in a regression
design. The control diet contained capelin oil (FO) only, and the same oil was blended with LO to provide the experimental
diets. After an initial period of 40 wk, all groups were switched to a finishing diet containing only FO for a further 24
wk. Growth and flesh lipid contents were not affected by dietary treatment. The FA compositions of flesh total lipids were
linearly correlated with dietary FA compositions (r
2=0.88–1.00, P<0.0001). LO included at 50% of added dietary lipids reduced flesh DHA and EPA (20∶5n−3) concentrations to 65 and 58%, respectively,
of the concentrations in fish fed FO. Feeding 100% LO reduced flesh DHA and EPA concentrations to 38 and 30%, respectively,
of the values in fish fed FO. Differences between diet and flesh FA concentrations showed that 16∶0, 18∶1n−9, and especially
DHA were preferentially retained in flesh, whereas 18∶2n−6, 18∶3n−3, and 22∶1n−11 were selected against and presumably utilized
for energy. In fish previously fed 50 and 100% LO, feeding a finishing diet containing FO for 16 wk restored flesh DHA and
EPA concentrations, to ≈80% of the values in fish fed FO throughout. Flesh DHA and EPA concentrations in fish fed up to 50%
LO were above recommended intake values for humans for these EFA. This study suggests that LO can be used as a substitute
for FO in seawater salmon feeds and that any reductions in DHA and EPA can be largely overcome with a finishing diethigh in

We demonstrate the fabrication of solid-state dielectric energy storage materials from self-assembled, aligned single-walled carbon nanotube arrays (VA-SWNTs). The arrays are transferred as intact structures to a conductive substrate and the nanotubes are conformally coated with a thin metal-oxide dielectric and a conductive counter-electrode layer using atomic layer deposition. Experimental results yield values in agreement with those obtained through capacitive modeling using Al2O3 dielectric coatings (C > 20 mF/cm3), and the solid-state dielectric architecture enables the operation of these devices at substantially higher frequencies than conventional electrolyte-based capacitor designs. Furthermore, modeling of supercapacitor architectures utilizing other dielectric layers suggests the ability to achieve energy densities above 10 W h/kg while still exhibiting power densities comparable to conventional solid-state capacitor devices. This device design efficiently converts the high surface area available in the conductive VA-SWNT electrode to space for energy storage while boasting a robust solid-state material framework that is versatile for use in a range of conditions not practical with current energy storage technology. 相似文献

This work reported the rate of nickel biosorption using acid‐washed barley straw (AWBS) at different initial nickel concentration, AWBS particle size, solution pH, and temperature. The biosorption process was rapid and the equilibrium was reached in about 100 min with initial nickel concentrations from 250 to 1000 mg/L. AWBS with particle size of <0.425 mm exhibited a greater adsorption rate and reached equilibrium faster than particle sizes of 0.425–1.18 mm. An increase in pH from 3.0 ± 0.1 to 7.0 ± 0.1 increased the rate of adsorption and resulted in a higher equilibrium nickel uptake. Nickel adsorption was more favourable at 23 ± 1°C compared to 5 ± 1°C and 40 ± 1°C. The external mass transfer model was able to fit the dynamic nickel biosorption data and provided acceptable overall volumetric mass transfer coefficients. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Compared with agriculture, microalgae culture promises to be a novel way of producing lipids for both food consumption and transportation fuel (biodiesel) purposes while using a minimal amount of land area. A circulating loop photobioreactor has been used to study the growth kinetics and lipid yield of Chlorella vulgaris growing on carbon dioxide as the sole source of carbon. RESULTS: Because of high photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) fluxes, C. vulgaris was observed to grow in exponential mode. The highest growth rate achieved was 0.049 h?1 at the optimum growth conditions of 71.8 mW L?1 PAR density, 10% CO2 (v/v) in air and with an applied 8 h dark phase. The microalgae was observed to grow in a Monod fashion with a PAR density saturation coefficient of 2.8 mW L?1. Light intensity showed the potential to significantly increase lipid yield, which reached a maximum of 30% (by mass) of cell dry weight. CONCLUSION: The circulating loop photobioreactor is a low‐cost bioreactor technology capable of culturing photosynthetic microalgae at high PAR densities and with uniform mixing and lighting. In order to develop zein fibers with improved physical properties and solvent resistance, formaldehyde was used as a crosslinking reagent before spinning. The crosslinking reaction was carried out in either acetic acid or ethanolic HCl where the amount of crosslinking reagent was between 1 and 6%. Reactions were carried out at various times and temperatures. When carried out in acetic acid, the maximum amount of formaldehyde that could be used was 1.5% as gelation occurred at higher levels. In ethanolic HCl, 6% formaldehyde could be incorporated into zein. All solutions were successfully electrospun, producing predominantly ribbon and round fibers; the morphology was strongly dependent on solvent and spinning solids. The formaldehyde‐crosslinked zein fabrics had double the tensile strength of control fabrics. SDS‐PAGE analysis clearly showed crosslinking had occurred. Electrospun fabrics from all formaldehyde‐treated zein solutions required an additional heating step in order to be resistant to dissolution in acetic acid, a known very good solvent for zein. A salt bath furnace is basically a ceramic or metal container filled with molten salt into which work is immersed for either heating or cooling. The furnace contains salt such as nitrates, nitrites, caustic soda, chlorides, carbonates, and cyanide. Mixtures of salt are selected to give a specific temperature range and a desired treatment (or lack of treatment) to the surface of the material being processed. When we want to change the physical properties of something without changing the surface of it, we use neutral salts such as chlorides and nitrates. We can change the surface conditions of a part by placing it in a salt bath furnace having ingredients that react chemically with the surface as in carburizing, cyaniding, nitriding, and aluminizing. The factors affecting the initial rate of Telon Blue (Acid) dye adsorption onto peat have been investigated. The surface mass transfer coefficients for the rate of dye removal from solution have been determined and correlated as the dimensionless mass transfer term Sh/Sc0.33. The function Sh/Sc0.33 has been correlated with respect to four variables, namely, agitation, initial dye concentration, peat particle size range and the temperature of the dye solution. The mass transfer term varies with T5.5, dp0.13, co?1.1 and R.P.M.0.26; consequently temperature has the most pronounced effect on the mass transfer coefficient. 相似文献

We report the monitoring of porous silicon (pSi) degradation in aqueous solutions using a consumer-grade digital camera. To facilitate optical monitoring, the pSi samples were prepared as one-dimensional photonic crystals (rugate filters) by electrochemical etching of highly doped p-type Si wafers using a periodic etch waveform. Two pSi formulations, representing chemistries relevant for self-reporting drug delivery applications, were tested: freshly etched pSi (fpSi) and fpSi coated with the biodegradable polymer chitosan (pSi-ch). Accelerated degradation of the samples in an ethanol-containing pH 10 aqueous basic buffer was monitored in situ by digital imaging with a consumer-grade digital camera with simultaneous optical reflectance spectrophotometric point measurements. As the nanostructured porous silicon matrix dissolved, a hypsochromic shift in the wavelength of the rugate reflectance peak resulted in visible color changes from red to green. While the H coordinate in the hue, saturation, and value (HSV) color space calculated using the as-acquired photographs was a good monitor of degradation at short times (t < 100 min), it was not a useful monitor of sample degradation at longer times since it was influenced by reflections of the broad spectral output of the lamp as well as from the narrow rugate reflectance band. A monotonic relationship was observed between the wavelength of the rugate reflectance peak and an H parameter value calculated from the average red-green-blue (RGB) values of each image by first independently normalizing each channel (R, G, and B) using their maximum and minimum value over the time course of the degradation process. Spectrophotometric measurements and digital image analysis using this H parameter gave consistent relative stabilities of the samples as fpSi > pSi-ch. 相似文献

The effect on the physical properties and solubility of corn protein (zein) films was studied after reaction of zein with polyethylenemaleic anhydride (PEMA). Reactions were carried out in dimethylformamide (DMF) solution where the concentration of PEMA was varied between 0 and 6%. After reaction at room temperature, cast films were prepared, and the physical and solubility properties were determined. Incorporating more than 2% PEMA provided films with increased tensile strength and elongation. Incorporating 6% PEMA provided films with higher tensile strength (32–42 MPa) and improved solvent resistance (100–21% solubility) relative to control. If the films were heated in an oven, the film's solubility decreased further. Solution rheology experiments demonstrated that the zein and PEMA formed a cross‐linked gel with time in DMF. Dynamic mechanical analysis experiments have shown that the PEMA‐modified zein films undergo a dramatic loss in modulus on reaching 116°C, whereas the control experiences this loss at 98°C. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
