Resilient cows are minimally affected in their functioning by infections and other disturbances, and recover quickly. Herd management is expected to have an effect on disturbances and the resilience of cows, and this effect was investigated in this study. Two resilience indicators were first recorded on individual cows. The effect of herd-year on these resilience indicators was then estimated and corrected for genetic and year-season effects. The 2 resilience indicators were the variance and the lag-1 autocorrelation of daily milk yield deviations from an expected lactation curve. Low variance and autocorrelation indicate that a cow does not fluctuate much around her expected milk yield and is, thus, subject to few disturbances, or little affected by disturbances (resilient). The herd-year estimates of the resilience indicators were estimated for 9,917 herd-year classes based on records of 227,655 primiparous cows from 2,644 herds. The herd-year estimates of the resilience indicators were then related to herd performance variables. Large differences in the herd-year estimates of the 2 resilience indicators (variance and autocorrelation) were observed between herd-years, indicating an effect of management on these traits. Furthermore, herd-year classes with a high variance tended to have a high proportion of cows with a rumen acidosis indication (r = 0.31), high SCS (r = 0.19), low fat content (r = ?0.18), long calving interval (r = 0.14), low survival to second lactation (r = ?0.13), large herd size (r = 0.12), low lactose content (r = ?0.12), and high production (r = 0.10). These correlations support that herds with high variance are not resilient. The correlation between the variance and the proportion of cows with a rumen acidosis indication suggests that feed management may have an important effect on the variance. Herd-year classes with a high autocorrelation tended to have a high proportion of cows with a ketosis indication (r = 0.14) and a high production (r = 0.13), but a low somatic cell score (r = ?0.17) and a low proportion of cows with a rumen acidosis indication (r = ?0.12). These correlations suggest that high autocorrelation at herd level indicates either good or poor resilience, and is thus a poor resilience indicator. However, the combination of a high variance and a high autocorrelation is expected to indicate many fluctuations with slow recovery. This study investigates how life course characteristics and housing market circumstances affect the formation and realisation of preferences to move into homeownership. Using a data set from the Netherlands in which data from three cross-sectional housing surveys are enriched with longitudinal register data for the period 1998–2008, we follow aspiring homeowners regarding their actual residential behaviour. We find that only 31 % of the aspiring homeowners became homeowners within 2 years, approximately 13 % moved to rental homes, and the vast majority did not move at all. Insufficient socioeconomic resources and a high house price-to-rent ratio hamper the realisation of preferences to move into homeownership. However, these hampering factors are at least as important as the extent to which individuals prefer to move into homeownership. The water sorption and diffusion in (reduced) graphene oxide‐alginate composites of various compositions is analyzed. Water sorption of sodium alginate can be significantly reduced by the inclusion of graphene oxide sheets due to the formation of an extensive hydrogen bonding network between oxygenated groups. Crosslinking alginate with divalent metal ions and the presence of reduced graphene oxide can further improve the swelling resistance due to the strong interactions between metal ions, alginate, and filler sheets. Depending on conditions and composition, the overall water barrier properties of alginate composites improve upon (reduced) graphene oxide filling, making them attractive for moisture barrier coating applications. Water sorption kinetics in all alginate composites indicate a non‐Fickian diffusion process that can be accurately described by the Variable Surface Concentration model. In addition, the water barrier properties of sodium alginate‐graphene oxide composites can be adequately predicted using a simple model that takes the orientational order of filler sheets and their effective aspect ratio into account.

In recent years, it has been shown that not only is the phenotype under genetic control, but also the environmental variance. Very little, however, is known about the genetic architecture of environmental variance. The main objective of this study was to unravel the genetic architecture of the mean and environmental variance of somatic cell score (SCS) by identifying genome-wide associations for mean and environmental variance of SCS in dairy cows and by quantifying the accuracy of genome-wide breeding values. Somatic cell score was used because previous research has shown that the environmental variance of SCS is partly under genetic control and reduction of the variance of SCS by selection is desirable. In this study, we used 37,590 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotypes and 46,353 test-day records of 1,642 cows at experimental research farms in 4 countries in Europe. We used a genomic relationship matrix in a double hierarchical generalized linear model to estimate genome-wide breeding values and genetic parameters. The estimated mean and environmental variance per cow was used in a Bayesian multi-locus model to identify SNP associated with either the mean or the environmental variance of SCS. Based on the obtained accuracy of genome-wide breeding values, 985 and 541 independent chromosome segments affecting the mean and environmental variance of SCS, respectively, were identified. Using a genomic relationship matrix increased the accuracy of breeding values relative to using a pedigree relationship matrix. In total, 43 SNP were significantly associated with either the mean (22) or the environmental variance of SCS (21). The SNP with the highest Bayes factor was on chromosome 9 (Hapmap31053-BTA-111664) explaining approximately 3% of the genetic variance of the environmental variance of SCS. Other significant SNP explained less than 1% of the genetic variance. It can be concluded that fewer genomic regions affect the environmental variance of SCS than the mean of SCS, but genes with large effects seem to be absent for both traits. 相似文献

Home-ownership is transmitted between generations. Parental gifts form one of the mechanisms through which the intergenerational transmission of home-ownership takes place. Using the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study, we investigated the influence of parental and children’s resources and other characteristics on financial support from parents to children. A major independent variable was parental home-ownership. As dependent variables, we distinguished between financial support towards buying a home, and financial support in the form of gifts of € 5,000 or more ever received. By making this distinction, we could test whether homeowner parents were particularly likely to help their children become homeowners rather than giving other types of financial help. The results did not indicate such specific gift-giving: parental home-ownership was just as important to other types of monetary support as to home-ownership support. However, the distance to the place where the adult child had grown up was negatively associated with receiving home-ownership support but not with receiving other financial transfers. 相似文献

Literature points to persistent issues in human-automation interaction, which are caused either when the human does not understand
the automation or when the automation does not understand the human. Design guidelines for human-automation interaction aim
to avoid such issues and commonly agree that the human should have continuous interaction and communication with the automation
system and its authority level and should retain final authority. This paper argues that haptic shared control is a promising
approach to meet the commonly voiced design guidelines for human-automation interaction, especially for automotive applications.
The goal of the paper is to provide evidence for this statement, by discussing several realizations of haptic shared control
found in literature. We show that literature provides ample experimental evidence that haptic shared control can lead to short-term
performance benefits (e.g., faster and more accurate vehicle control; lower levels of control effort; reduced demand for visual
attention). We conclude that although the continuous intuitive physical interaction inherent in haptic shared control is expected
to reduce long-term issues with human-automation interaction, little experimental evidence for this is provided. Therefore,
future research on haptic shared control should focus more on issues related to long-term use such as trust, overreliance,

The present study was designed to evaluate the relationship between reinstatement of drug-seeking behaviour following long-term extinction of intravenous (i.v.) drug self-administration (an animal model for craving) and long-term behavioural sensitization. Rats were allowed to self-administer heroin (50 microg/kg per inj., 14 daily sessions), cocaine (500 microg/kg per inj., 10 daily sessions) or saline. Following a 3-week extinction period, reinstatement tests were performed to evaluate priming effects of amphetamine, cocaine and heroin on nonreinforced drug-seeking behaviour. In addition, the occurrence of long-term behavioural sensitization in rats with a history of heroin or cocaine self-administration was determined. Heroin-seeking behaviour was reinstated by heroin (0.25 mg/kg), amphetamine (1.0 mg/kg) and cocaine (10 mg/kg). In addition, animals with a history of heroin self-administration displayed locomotor sensitization to both heroin and amphetamine. Cocaine-seeking behaviour was reinstated by cocaine and amphetamine, but not by heroin. Interestingly, locomotor sensitization to amphetamine, but not heroin, was observed in animals with a history of cocaine self-administration. In other words, the induction of drug-seeking behaviour following a prolonged drug-free period was found to be associated with the expression of long-term behavioural sensitization. These data provide experimental evidence for a role of behavioural sensitization in the incentive motivation underlying drug-seeking behaviour. If drug hyperresponsiveness would indeed be a crucial factor in drug-induced craving in human addicts, pharmacological readjustment of the neuroadaptations underlying drug sensitization may prevent relapse to drug use long after detoxification. 相似文献

As reported before, the metabolic activity of nucleus basalis neurons is reduced significantly in Alzheimer patients. Because the apolipoprotein E (ApoE) epsilon4 genotype is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), we determined whether the decrease in metabolic activity in nucleus basalis neurons in AD is ApoE-type dependent. The size of the Golgi apparatus (GA) was determined as a measure of neuronal metabolic activity in 30 controls and 41 AD patients with a known ApoE genotype by using an image analysis system in the nucleus basalis of Meynert. A polyclonal antibody directed against MG-160, a sialoglycoprotein of the GA, was used to visualize this organelle. There was a very strong reduction in the size of the GA in the nucleus basalis of AD patients. Furthermore, a strong and significant extra reduction in the size of the GA was found in the nucleus basalis neurons of AD patients with either one or two ApoE epsilon4 alleles compared with Alzheimer patients without ApoE epsilon4 alleles. Our data show that the decreased activity of nucleus basalis neurons in AD is ApoE epsilon4 dependent and suggest that ApoE epsilon4 participates in the pathogenesis of AD by decreasing neuronal metabolism. 相似文献

The theme of this presentation is that technical barriers exist that have prevented widespread industrial use of intelligent robots and manufacturing machines. These barriers must be successfully addressed for major progress to occur in these fields. Each barrier is identified and discussed, current research projects addressing each barrier in that area are presented, and opinions expressed as to how that barrier will be removed. This paper presents some current industry/university cooperative research results that reinforce the author's view; nine selected projects will be highlighted. Areas of special interest are presented including intelligent robots, intelligent machines, adaptive control structures, the potential of neural nets, the influence of cognitive processes, and the potential for autonomous machine operation in the factory of the future. Some comments on the mechanisms needed for successful industry/university cooperative research are offered. 相似文献
