Diets rich in fruits and vegetables are associated with a lower risk of tumour induction in the intestine and other sites. Apple juice with high amounts of antioxidative phenolics might protect the intestine against reactive oxygen species-mediated cell damage. We investigated to which extent the preventive effectiveness of polyphenolic juice extracts is governed by the amounts of five major constituents (rutin, phloridzin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and epicatechin). In human colon cell lines (Caco-2, HT29), reconstituted mixtures of these phenolics were investigated in comparison to the original juice extracts, originating from cider and table apples. Parameters studied were (oxidative) DNA damage (Comet assay), cellular redox status (dichlorofluorescein assay) and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). The TEAC of the reconstituted mixtures was higher compared to the respective original extracts (4.7-7.3 mM vs. 3.6-4.2 mM Trolox). After 24 h cell incubation, menadione-induced (oxidative) DNA damage was more effectively reduced by the reconstituted mixtures (1-100 microg/mL, 24 h), as compared to the original extracts. In contrast, the cellular ROS level was reduced to a rather similar extent by original extracts and reconstituted mixtures. The results lead to the conclusion that the selected constituents in their authentic proportions substantially account for the antioxidative effectiveness of phenolic apple juice extracts.  相似文献

We use pyroelectric detectors that are differential in nature to detect motion in humans by their heat emissions. Coded Fresnel lens arrays create boundaries that help to localize humans in space as well as to classify the nature of their motion. We design and implement a low-cost biometric tracking system by using off-the-shelf components. We demonstrate two classification methods by using data gathered from sensor clusters of dual-element pyroelectric detectors with coded Fresnel lens arrays. We propose two algorithms for person identification, a more generalized spectral clustering method and a more rigorous example that uses principal component regression to perform a blind classification.  相似文献

The paper presents an extension of the composite programmable graph grammar (CP‐graph grammar) suitable for modeling the parallel direct solver algorithm utilized by the hp finite element method (hp‐FEM). In the proposed graph grammar model, the computational mesh is represented by a CP‐graph. The presented graph grammar models the solver algorithm by a set of graph grammar productions. The graph grammar model makes it possible to examine the concurrency of the algorithm by analyzing the interdependence between the atomic tasks, tasks and super‐tasks. The atomic tasks correspond to the graph grammar productions, representing basic undividable parts of the algorithms. The level of atomic tasks models the concurrency for the shared memory architectures. On the other hand, the tasks correspond to the groups of atomic tasks with predefined inter‐task communication channels. They constitute the grain for the decomposition of the parallel algorithm for the distributed memory architecture. Finally, the super‐tasks correspond to a group of tasks resulting from the execution of load balancing algorithm. The purpose of this article was to determine the shelf life of etoposide in poly(lacticco-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres prepared with and without additives (i.e., tricaprin and isopropyl myristic acid ester [IPM]). The microspheres were prepared by a single-emulsion solvent extraction technique with and without 25% w/w additive. The batches of microspheres were subjected to an accelerated stability study at two elevated temperatures (70°C and 80°C or 80°C and 90°C). Samples were taken at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days for estimation of drug content by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The drug stability in the microspheres was determined by plotting the log percentage drug remaining versus time to obtain the degradation rate constant k of etoposide at the measured temperature. This degradation rate constant was then used in the Arrhenius equation to obtain the activation energy of etoposide, which was utilized to determine the shelf life of the microspheres at room temperature. The results showed that all three microsphere formulations had good long-term stability at room temperature (6.62-8.86 years at 25°C). The plain microspheres were shown to possess a shelf life of 6.62 years, and the IPM and tricaprin were the most stable with shelf lives of 8.25 and 8.86 years, respectively.  相似文献

In the process of selecting Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products, it is inevitable to encounter mismatches between system requirements and COTS products. These mismatches occur as a result of an excess or shortage of the COTS attributes. This paper proposes a decision support approach, called MiHOS (Mismatch Handling for COTS Selection), that aims at addressing COTS mismatches during and after the selection process. MiHOS can be integrated with existing COTS selection methods at two points: (1) For evaluating COTS candidates: MiHOS estimates the anticipated fitness of the candidates if their mismatches are resolved. This helps to base our COTS selection decisions on the fitness that the candidates will eventually have if selected. (2) Mismatch resolution after selecting a COTS product: MiHOS suggests alternative plans for resolving the most appropriate mismatches using suitable actions, such that the most important risk, technical, and resource constraints are met. A case-study is used to illustrate MiHOS and to discuss its added value.

On the basis of the Gestalt figure-ground principle, an objective self-awareness theory interpretation of group size effects in helping situations was proposed. From this perspective, the diffusion of responsibility effect commonly observed in helping research is the decreasing likelihood of bystander objective self-awareness, and hence bystander intervention, that accompanies increases in the size of the bystander group. A complementary concentration of responsibility hypothesis derived from this analysis states that an increasing likelihood of bystander objective self-awareness, and therefore of bystander aiding behavior, is associated with increases in the size of the victim group. An experiment with 48 undergraduates tested this hypothesis in a 2–2 design varying number of potential helpers (1 vs 3) and number of victims (1 vs 3). Results show that straightforward appeals for help were more likely to be met with assistance when there were fewer potential helpers or more victims; thus, both the diffusion and concentration of responsibility were observed. Ratings of attentional focus obtained from 126 observer-Ss in a simulation of this experiment further substantiated the contention that these effects are attributable to variations in self-focused attention experienced by potential helpers. In ground sections of human teeth, root cementum shows under the light microscope as alternating, almost concentric, dark and light rings. In paleontology and forensic medicine, the number of these incremental lines or annulations is used to derive the age-at-death of the individual. To find the ultrastructural features underlying these cemental annulations, we used bright-field light microscopy (LM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electron-dispersive x-radiation (EDX) in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Annulations visible in ground sections of about 100-micron thickness were no longer visible in semi-thin sections (thickness, 1-2 microns) of the same specimen in the same area. The assumption that annulations could be caused by super-imposing structures in the depth of field of the light microscope's objective lens was not verified by CLSM. Fiber bundles of higher density than the surrounding matrix in TEM micrographs could not be connected unambiguously with annulations in LM micrographs. After all, the ultrastructural nature of cemental annulations remains an open question.  相似文献
