There is increasing interest in understanding how office accommodation affects organizational productivity. Data on metrics of engagement, job satisfaction, job performance and facility complaints for thousands of employees (n?=?14,569) of a large Canadian financial organization were analysed to explore differences in outcomes between those working in green-certified office buildings (n?=?10) and those in otherwise similar conventional buildings (n?=?10). Overall, green-certified buildings demonstrated higher scores on survey outcomes related to job satisfaction, value to clients and stakeholders, evaluation of management, and corporate engagement. There was also a tendency for manager-assessed job performance to be higher in green-certified buildings. Nevertheless, not all green-certified buildings outperformed all conventional buildings, and superior performance was not exhibited on all outcomes examined. A key observation is that such metrics are routinely recorded by organizations, but relating them to building characteristics is new. Recognition of such datasets opens up many promising avenues for buildings research.  相似文献

This paper presents a semi‐adaptive control approach to closed‐loop medication infusion problems. The rationale underlying this approach is to design a controller that can adapt model parameters with a large impact on the model's fidelity while fixing the remaining parameters at nominal values. In this paper, a control‐oriented model for this purpose is derived via system identification and sensitivity analysis of a low‐order model capturing the direct dose‐response relationship Using the model thus derived, a model‐reference adaptive controller and a composite adaptive controller are designed and compared with each other. In‐silico simulation results using remifentanil's effect on respiratory rate as an example indicate that both controllers can regulate the output at commanded set points. Recently, new type of small Base Station known as “femtocell” has emerged. Femtocells are deployed by customers with minimal or no radio frequency planning in arbitrary locations. Thus, operators must use new approaches rather than the classic network planning and optimization. Self‐organization techniques will allow femtocells to integrate themselves into the network, learn about their environment, and adjust their parameters (power, frequency) accordingly. In this paper, a new spectrum mobility management algorithm is proposed. It allows intelligent use of the spectrum by secondary user (femtocell guest user) accessing spectrum holes unoccupied by primary users (subscriber user) and handing over to new channels or femtocells when primary user appears. Our solution aims to have more adaptive and aware communication system, which can make better use of available natural resources.  相似文献

The effects of wall axial heat conduction in a conjugate heat transfer problem in simultaneously developing laminar flow and heat transfer in straight thick wall of circular tube with constant outside wall temperature are numerically investigated. The results show that the heat transfer process is most sensitive to wall-to-fluid conductivity ratio ksf, and when ksf ? 25 the increasing tube thickness and the decreasing ksf could make the inner wall surface approaching the uniform heat flux condition. It turns out that the basic function of the wall axial heat conduction for the cases studied is to unify the inner wall surface heat flux.  相似文献

Despite the efforts of governments and the various support programmes, achievement of advanced stages of e-commerce by small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is still very low. There have been some attempts to study the dynamic nature of websites, but there is still little research evidence to explain why and how SMEs evolve their web presence. This paper aims to develop a comprehensive classification of drivers for web site redesign based on interviews with various members of staff from SMEs in the U.K. that have recently redesigned their web sites. A sequential mixed-methodological analysis, involving the use of qualitative and quantitative data analysis, was used to develop the classification. This enabled the development of a framework that classified seven main categories of drivers for web site redesign. The drivers identified were: changing business requirements, evolving internet strategies, addressing user needs, maintenance, changing technology, pressure from peers/competitors, and the influence of developers. However, only the first four were found to be significant in the study. The categorisation and the findings suggest a number of key determinants not explicitly addressed by other work. In addition, the findings provide little support for the staged approach to e-commerce progression as few companies reported the implementation of sophisticated internet technology features as a main reason for their web site redesigns. The contributions of this paper are firstly, to provide an instrument to the academic and practitioner communities interested in the topic of web site evolution. Secondly, the categorisation of drivers for redesign and the individual reasons found in this study are expected to provide assistance to SME managers to justify, plan and strategise internet investments realistically and effectively.  相似文献

In some companies such as large retail stores, the employees perform different activities (e.g., cashier or clerk in a specific department) to respond to a customer demand for each activity that varies over the planning horizon and must be fulfilled as soon as possible. For a given time period, this demand translates into an ideal number of employees required for the corresponding activity. During a work shift, an employee can be assigned to several activities that are interruptible at any time and subject to operational constraints (required skills, minimum and maximum assignment durations). Given work shifts already assigned to the employees, the multi-activity assignment problem (MAAP) consists of assigning activities to the shifts such that the activity demands are satisfied as best as possible over the planning horizon. In this paper, we propose three integer programming models for the MAAP and develop various heuristics based on mathematical programming techniques. Computational results obtained on randomly generated MAAP instances show that a heuristic column generation method embedded into a rolling horizon procedure provides the best results in general.  相似文献
