ATTEMPTS TO ASSESS THE DEGREE TO WHICH CONSCIOUS MOTIVATION AFFECTS SS' OPENNESS ON PROJECTIVE TESTS. THE INFLUENCE OF STIMULUS VARIATION IS ALSO EXAMINED. USING ROLE-PLAYING INSTRUCTIONS, 31 UNDERGRADUATE SS WERE DIRECTED TO TELL PERSONALLY REVEALING STORIES TO 6 TAT CARDS; 29 OTHERS WROTE GUARDED STORIES. RATINGS OF THE STORIES BY JUDGES USING A MANUAL OF OPENNESS INDICATED THAT SS CAN SUCCESSFULLY CONTROL THIS FACET OF TAT PERFORMANCE AND THAT JUDGES CAN OBJECTIVELY EVALUATE AN S'S INTENT. DEGREE OF ASSESSED OPENNESS IS SHOWN TO BE RELATED TO DIFFERENCES IN TAT CARDS AND ALSO TO THE S'S SEX. IMPLICATIONS FOR USE OF PROJECTIVE TECHNIQUES AND FURTHER RESEARCH ARE DISCUSSED, AS WELL AS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A SUBGROUP OF SS WHO, WHILE INSTRUCTED TO BE GUARDED, WROTE STORIES RATED AS OPEN. RANCIDITY DEVELOPMENT IN A FISH MODEL SYSTEM AS AFFECTED BY PHOSPHOLIPIDS

Blood components demonstrated the ability to oxidize their own lipids. Blood plasma developed strong oxidation odor during storage apparently due to oxidation of its lipid components. Rancid odor and substantial thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) development occurred in shaken solutions of trout blood containing approximately 0.01% lipid. When whole blood was added to washed cod muscle that was taken through a lipid reduction process, rancid odor still occurred during storage. Having at least six times more membrane phospho-lipids present did not enhance the rate or extent of rancidity development during storage of washed cod containing added blood. Contrary to sensory data, TBARS formed more rapidly in the reduced lipid washed cod compared to the washed cod containing approximately 0.6% lipid. The TBARS formation was greater in the reduced lipid washed cod than in the washed cod when expressed on a lipid basis but not when expressed on a wet weight basis. The lack of rancidity and TBARS development when hemolysate was added to a myosin preparation suggested that at least trace amounts of lipid were required for rancidity to occur. Results from these experiments indicate that rancid odor and extensive lipid oxidation can occur at remarkably low levels of fish lipid.     

Analysis of the anthocyanin composition of Cabernet Sauvignon and Portugieser wines provides an objective assessment of the grape varieties

This paper presents data on the ratios of acetylated to p -coumaroylated anthocyanins of authentic and unadulterated trade samples of 71 Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 Portugieser winegrape varieties. The relative peak areas of nine characterising anthocyanins were determined by a standardised and validated HPLC-method. The 95%-confidence ranges calculated from the data ranged from 2.9 to 5.7 for the Cabernet Sauvignon wines and from 0.7 to 1.7 for the Portugieser wines. The rule that individual anthocyanin components are normally distributed was also confirmed for wines vinified from Gamay and Kadarka (Gamza) grape varieties.     

Phase Equilibria in the Alkali Fluoride-Uranium Tetrafluoride Fused Salt Systems: II, The Systems KF-UF4 and RbF-UF4

Mixtures of alkali fluorides with uranium tetra-fluoride are of potential importance in molten-salt reactors and in the reprocessing of nuclear fuels. In this paper detailed phase diagrams are presented for the binary systems KF-UF₄ and RbF-UF₄. Data for the determination of phase boundaries were obtained in large part by quenching after equilibration. Thermal analysis and visual observation were used as supplementary methods. Phase identifications were made by X-ray powder diffraction and by optical microscopy. In the system KF-UF₄ four compounds have been identified. Two of these, 3KF.UF₄ and 7KF.6UF₄, melt congruently at 957°C. and at 789°C., respectively. The compound 2KF UF₄ melts incongruently to 3KF.UF₄ and liquid at 755° C., and the compound KF.2UF₄ melts incongruently to UF₄ and liquid at 765° C. There are three eutectic points in the system: 15.0 mole % UF₄, 735° C.; 38.5 mole % UF₄, 740° C.; and 54.5 mole % UF₄, 735° C. The compound 2KF.UF4 decomposes during cooling to 3KF.UF₄ and 7KF 6UF₄ at 608° C. Two other compounds, KF 3UF₄ and KF.6UF₄, have been described by another investigator. One of these, KF 3UF₄, was not obtained at all in the present investigation. The other, KF.6UF₄, was not obtained under equilibrium conditions and was found only in KF-UF₄ mixtures that had been exposed to the atmosphere while molten. Seven solid compounds are present in the system RbF-UF₄. All of these melt incongruently with the exception of 3RbF.UF₄ and RbF-UF₄, which melt at 995° C. and at 735° C., respectively. The incongruently melting compounds and their melting points, peritectic compositions, and melting products are: 2RbF UF₄, 818°C., 38 mole % UF₄, 3RbF -UF₄+ liquid; 7RbF.6UF₄, 693° C., 44 mole % UF₄, RbF.UF₄+ liquid; 2RbF.3UF₄, 722° C., 56.5 mole % UF₄, RbF.3UF₄+ liquid; RbF. -3UF₄, 73O°C., 57 mole % UF₄, RbF.6UF₄+ liquid; and RbF.6UF₄, 832°C., 70.5 mole % UF₄, UF₄+ liquid. The three eutectic temperatures and compositions in the system are: 10.0 mole % UF₄, 710°C.; 43.5 mole % UF₄, 675°C.; and 55.0 mole % UF₄, 714°C.     

MACHINE CONSTANTS AND DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS OF A HIGH-POWER,HIGH-SPEED PERMANENT MAGNET DISC TYPE SYNCHRONOUS MACHINE

Abstract

Expressions for the element of the equivalent circuit of a disc type synchronous machine excited with permanent magnets are developed in terms of the principal machine dimensions. The calculations are based on a field analysis given by the authors in a previous paper using a linearised model

The internal leakage of the magnets and the finite permeability of the stator teeth are taken into consideration. The resulting expressions are useful in predicting the machine performance, in examining the influence of the main design parameters and are suitable for optimization purposes.     

Effects of Packaging Method, Display Light and Storage Time On The Microbial Growth and Rancidity of Fresh Pork

Effects of display light, packaging methods and storage time on total aerobic, lipolytic and proteolytic counts and oxidative rancidity of fresh pork stored at 2 ± 1° C were studied at the initial, 7th, 14th and 21st day of storage. Display light significantly increased the total aerobic psychrotroph count. Effects on lipolytic and proteolytic psychiotroph counts were not significant. No anaerobic psychrotrophs were encountered. Total and proteolytic counts of PVC film overwrapped chops and proteolytic and lipolytic psychrotroph counts of chops vacuum packaged accelerated linearly with time. Increases in lipolytic psychrotroph count of PVC packaged and total aerobic psychrotroph count of vacuum packaged chops were quadratic. TBA number and rancid odor scores were not significantly affected by treatments.
