Short chains of porphyrin molecules can mediate electron transport over distances as long as 5-10 nm with low attenuation. This means that porphyrin-based molecular wires could be useful in nanoelectronic and photovoltaic devices, but the mechanisms responsible for charge transport in single oligo-porphyrin wires have not yet been established. Here, based on electrical measurements of single-molecule junctions, we show that the conductance of the oligo-porphyrin wires has a strong dependence on temperature, and a weak dependence on the length of the wire. Although it is widely accepted that such behaviour is a signature of a thermally assisted incoherent (hopping) mechanism, density functional theory calculations and an accompanying analytical model strongly suggest that the observed temperature and length dependence is consistent with phase-coherent tunnelling through the whole molecular junction.  相似文献

We report a case of diabetic end-stage renal disease patient who presented with a right common carotid artery jugular arteriovenous fistula as a complication of the insertion of a polyurethane double-lumen hemodialysis catheter into the right internal jugular vein .On physical examination of the neck, a pulsating mass with a palpable thrill and a bruit was noted in the right subclavicular region. The diagnosis was confirmed by color doppler ultrasonography of the neck and carotid angiography. The review of the literature suggests the occurrence of this complication as rather rare. The fistula was successfully repaired surgically. It is emphasized that while securing the access, a thorough physical examination with a special emphasis on seeking any neck swellings, thrill, and bruit along with routine use of vascular doppler for securing dialysis access is recommended.  相似文献

Metformin (MTF) is one of the most common oral agents used to treat diabetes mellitus. Intoxication is associated with lactic acidosis and has significant clinical consequences. We report 12 cases requiring dialytic intervention. Twelve patients were analyzed from 2005 to 2010; 10 of these patients were treated with dialysis. Conventional hemodialysis (HD) and continuous veno-venous hemodialysis treatments with bicarbonate dialysis were used, and the results were presented as mean and standard deviation. The results are as follows: 33% of the patients were male, hospital stay was 9.3 (± 12) days, average MTF dose 1.7 g/day, mortality was 25%. Baseline glomerular filtration rate for these patients was 51.5?mL/min, with an average age of 64 (± 11) years. On presentation, all had acute kidney injury with blood urea nitrogen/creatinine 75 (± 30)/8.1 (± 3.7) mg/dL, lactic acid 12.4 (± 8.1) mmol/L, pH?7.04 (± 0.19), bicarbonate 7.2 (± 4.5) mmol/L. Metformin level was 25 (± 17) μg/mL; anion gap was 28 (± 9), and serum potassium was 5.4 (± 1.3) mEq/L. Seventy percent of patients were treated with conventional HD. Patients required 4 (± 5) dialysis treatments at blood flow QB 330 (± 53), dialysis flow QD 571 (± 111) for 305 (± 122) minutes. Postdialysis, the acidosis parameters improved: bicarbonate 19.2 (± 4.1) mmol/L, lactic acid 6 (± 4) mmol/L and MTF levels decreased 8.9 (± 5.7) μg/mL. Metformin percentage removal was calculated to be 60% (± 24). No difference was found between HD and continous veno-venous hemodialysis. We have investigated the carrier dynamics and activation energy of CdxZn(1-x)Te/ZnTe quantum dots (QDs) on GaAs and Si substrates. The carrier dynamics of QDs on GaAs and Si substrates is studied using time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) measurements, revealing shorter exciton lifetimes of QDs on Si substrate. In particular, the activation energy of electrons confined in QDs on the GaAs substrate, as obtained from temperature-dependent PL spectra, is higher than that of electrons confined in QDs on the Si substrate. Both results confirm that defects and dislocations in QDs on the Si substrate provide nonradiative channels.  相似文献

Quantum dots were proposed as new fluorochromes for use in fluorescence in-situ hybridization. EBV-encoded small RNA, the most abundant viral product in latently infected cells, was detected by quantum dot fluorescence in-situ hybridization in paraffin-embedded tissue sections of gastric carcinoma. An indirect FISH approach using quantum dots streptavidin conjugates as secondary reporters and digoxigenin labeled EBV-encoded small RNA oligonucleotide probes as detectable molecules was employed. Quantum dot fluorescence in-situ hybridization offered a slightly higher sensitivity in detecting EBV-encoded small RNA in gastric carcinoma than chromogenic in-situ hybridization. Statistical analyses showed that the detected EBV-associated gastric carcinoma was not associated with any clinicopathological parameters of the Chinese gastric carcinoma patients investigated in this study.  相似文献

Previously, we presented automated methods for thoraco-abdominal asynchrony estimation and movement artifact detection in respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) signals. This paper combines and improves these methods to give a method for the automated, off-line detection of pause, movement artifact, and asynchrony. Simulation studies demonstrated that the new combined method is accurate and robust in the presence of noise. The new procedure was successfully applied to cardiorespiratory signals acquired postoperatively from infants in the recovery room. A comparison of the events detected with the automated method to those visually scored by an expert clinician demonstrated a higher agreement (κ = 0.52) than that amongst several human scorers (κ = 0.31) in a clinical study . The method provides the following advantages: first, it is fully automated; second, it is more efficient than visual scoring; third, the analysis is repeatable and standardized; fourth, it provides greater agreement with an expert scorer compared to the agreement between trained scorers; fifth, it is amenable to online detection; and lastly, it is applicable to uncalibrated RIP signals. Examples of applications include respiratory monitoring of postsurgical patients and sleep studies.  相似文献

The potential of forest-based bioenergy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions when displacing fossil-based energy must be balanced with forest carbon implications related to biomass harvest. We integrate life cycle assessment (LCA) and forest carbon analysis to assess total GHG emissions of forest bioenergy over time. Application of the method to case studies of wood pellet and ethanol production from forest biomass reveals a substantial reduction in forest carbon due to bioenergy production. For all cases, harvest-related forest carbon reductions and associated GHG emissions initially exceed avoided fossil fuel-related emissions, temporarily increasing overall emissions. In the long term, electricity generation from pellets reduces overall emissions relative to coal, although forest carbon losses delay net GHG mitigation by 16-38 years, depending on biomass source (harvest residues/standing trees). Ethanol produced from standing trees increases overall emissions throughout 100 years of continuous production: ethanol from residues achieves reductions after a 74 year delay. Forest carbon more significantly affects bioenergy emissions when biomass is sourced from standing trees compared to residues and when less GHG-intensive fuels are displaced. In all cases, forest carbon dynamics are significant. Although study results are not generalizable to all forests, we suggest the integrated LCA/forest carbon approach be undertaken for bioenergy studies.  相似文献
