Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (coplanar PCBs) were determined in five albatross species collected from the North Pacific and Southern Oceans to assess the north-south differences in residue levels, accumulation patterns, and toxic potential. Black-footed and Laysan albatrosses from the North Pacific Ocean contained higher levels of PCDD/Fs and coplanar PCBs than albatrosses from the Southern Ocean, indicating that emission sources of these contaminants were predominant in the northern hemisphere. Residue levels in albatrosses from the remote North Pacific Ocean far from the point source of pollution were comparable to or higher than those in terrestrial and coastal birds from contaminated areas in developed nations, suggesting the specific exposure and accumulation of PCDD/Fs and coplanar PCBs in albatross. The long life span and ingestion of plastic resin pellets by albatrosses could be the plausible explanations for the elevated accumulation of persistent and lipophilic contaminants including PCDD/Fs and coplanar PCBs in these birds. Relative proportions of PCDFs and coplanar PCBs in albatross were higher than those observed in birds inhabiting terrestrial and coastal areas, suggesting that these toxic chemicals may have higher transportability by air and water than PCDDs. Congener patterns of PCDD/Fs in albatross showed less variability as compared to those in terrestrial species, indicating that contamination patterns of PCDD/Fs were similar within the open ocean environment. Contributions of PCDD/Fs to total TEQs in albatrosses from the open ocean were generally lower than those in terrestrial birds, suggesting different toxic potency of PCDD/Fs and coplanar PCBs on animals inhabiting open ocean and terrestrial environment. Whereas albatrosses from southern oceans retained lower TEQ concentrations, possible adverse effects of PCDD/Fs and coplanar PCBs to black-footed and Laysan albatrosses of the North Pacific Ocean may be suspected from TEQ levels.  相似文献

On the basis of congener-specific analysis of dioxins in a dated sediment core, the sources and behavior of dioxins in Lake Shinji Basin, Japan, were estimated. The dioxins in the core showed that their deposition in the lake increased rapidly during the 1960s, peaked in the early 1970s, and then decreased gradually. Principal component analysis of the congener-specific data showed that three major sources existed: pentachlorophenol (PCP), chloronitrophen (CNP), and combustion. PCP and CNP are paddy field herbicides used extensively in the basin. The time trends of source contributions were estimated by multiple regression analysis using the source profiles. The results revealed that dioxin emission from PCP and CNP herbicides was high in the 1960s and the early 1970s, respectively. The contributions from PCP, CNP, and combustion in recent surface sediment were about 68, 16, and 16% in terms of total amount of dioxins. From the decreasing trend of dioxin deposition in the lake after extensive herbicide use, the amount of dioxins that accumulated in the agricultural soil in the basin was estimated to have decreased by about 2%/yr or a half-life of about 35 yr, indicating that dioxin runoff from agricultural fields would continue for a long time.  相似文献

The bacteriocins produced by Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis C101910 (C101910) and NBRC 12007 (NBRC 12007) were used to prevent the growth of sake spoiling hiochi bacteria (Lactobacillus hilgardii, Lactobacillus fructivorans, and Lactobacillus paracasei) in namazake, which is raw (unpasteurized) sake. The bacteriocin concentrations required for decreasing the viable cell concentrations of L. hilgardii and L. fructivorans below the detection limit (1.0 × 102 cells/ml) in 24 h from the initial concentration of 4.0–9.5 × 105 cells/ml in the namazake at pH 4.5 and at 4°C, were 18–35 U/ml and 5.6 U/ml for the bacteriocin from C101910 and NBRC 12007, respectively. To decrease the viable cell concentration of L. paracasei from the initial concentration of 7.5 × 105 cells/ml to below the detection limit (1.0 × 102 cells/ml) in 24 h, 350 U/ml bacteriocin from C101910 and 140 U/ml bacteriocin from NBRC 12007 were required. In experiments using McIlvaine buffer (pH 4.5) with 15% ethanol instead of namazake as the medium, the viable cell concentrations of L. hilgardii and L. paracasei decreased to less than 1.0 × 102 cells/ml, whereas those of L. fructivorans decreased to less than 1.0 × 103 cells/ml, when bacteriocins were added at the concentrations that had proven effective in namazake. The membrane depolarization assay using a fluorescent probe showed that the presence of ethanol stimulated the collapse of the membrane potential induced by bacteriocins. The ethanol induced collapse of the membrane potential suggests that the application of bacteriocins at the storage stage of namazake is more beneficial than when used in other stages of the sake brewing process.  相似文献

This study describes the identification of a sex pheromone component of a cossid moth, Cossus insularis. Coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC–EAD) analysis of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) collections of volatiles released by live female moths showed that two compounds elicited EAG responses from the antennae of male moths. These compounds were identified as (E)-3-tetradecenyl acetate (E3-14:Ac) and (Z)-3-tetradecenyl acetate (Z3-14:Ac) by mass spectral analysis and retention index comparisons with synthetic standards. The ratio of E3-14:Ac and Z3-14:Ac was 95:5 in the effluvia of a female. In field bioassays, sticky traps baited with blends of E3-14:Ac and Z3-14:Ac showed that E3-14:Ac is an essential component of the pheromone. However, the role of Z3-14:Ac is unclear, because E3-14:Ac as a single component was as attractive to male moths as blends of E3-14:Ac and Z3-14:Ac, including the 95:5 blend released by live female moths.  相似文献

Esophageal cancer is a well-known cancer with poorer prognosis than other cancers. An optimal and individualized treatment protocol based on accurate diagnosis is urgently needed to improve the treatment of cancer patients. For this purpose, it is important to develop a sophisticated algorithm that can manage a large amount of data, such as gene expression data from DNA microarrays, for optimal and individualized diagnosis. Marker gene selection is essential in the analysis of gene expression data. We have already developed a combination method of the use of the projective adaptive resonance theory and that of a boosted fuzzy classifier with the SWEEP operator denoted PART-BFCS. This method is superior to other methods, and has four features, namely fast calculation, accurate prediction, reliable prediction, and rule extraction. In this study, we applied this method to analyze microarray data obtained from esophageal cancer patients. A combination method of PART-BFCS and the U-test was also investigated. It was necessary to use a specific type of BFCS, namely, BFCS-1,2, because the esophageal cancer data were very complexity. PART-BFCS and PART-BFCS with the U-test models showed higher performances than two conventional methods, namely, k-nearest neighbor (kNN) and weighted voting (WV). The genes including CDK6 could be found by our methods and excellent IF-THEN rules could be extracted. The genes selected in this study have a high potential as new diagnosis markers for esophageal cancer. These results indicate that the new methods can be used in marker gene selection for the diagnosis of cancer patients.  相似文献

The effect of quenching on the martensitic transformation mechanism in 1 Au-Cd alloys has been investigated by measurements of the electrical resistivity and X-ray diffraction. In the case of the Au-47.5 at%Cd alloy, the 2-martensite is the characteristic product under quenching conditions, but it always exists with the equilibrium 2-martensite phase. Consequently, the 1 2 and 2transformations occur simultaneously during the heating and cooling cycles. The corresponding resistivity behaviour is very complicated and extremely sensitive to thermal treatments such as quenching temperature and thermal cycling. On the other hand, in the case of the Au-49.0 at%Cd alloy, only the 1 2 transformation occurs even when quenched, and the transformation is unaffected structurally by quenching. A distinct resistivity anomaly, which is considered to be due to the disappearance of quenched-in vacancies, is observed in quenched alloys. Some important characteristics of this anomaly are determined. In particular, the quenching effect disappears when the specimen is heated above the temperature at which the resisitivity anomaly begins. This result suggests that the quenched-in vacancies play an essential role in the martensitic transformation process under quenching conditions.  相似文献

Microwave (MW)-assisted de-emulsification has been attractive in processes of petroleum production and refining. However, the mechanism and optimal operation remain poorly understood. In this study, the behaviour of decane-in-water emulsion under MW irradiation was monitored in-situ through a size measurement system equipped with the reactor and surface tension profiles. The results indicated that the bubble was formed around the oil droplet during MW irradiation. The MW-induced bubbles can enhance de-emulsification in a similar mechanism as the flotation column. The efficiency of MW de-emulsification depends on emulsion content and MW power. Although a higher MW power is more effective, boiling caused by excessive energy must be considered due to the higher local heating. As a result, moderate power is more desirable. For the decane-in-water emulsions in this study, the optimal condition was determined to be around 500 W.  相似文献
